Book excerpt: Noted ornithologist and anthropologist Henry Henshaw wrote this highly useful reference during a ten year sabbatical in the Hawaiian Islands. Out of print for decades, the few remaining copies of this scarce work are seldom found outside of academic libraries and private collections. This book is a facsimile reprint of the complete original as published in Honolulu in 1902. "In this admirable paper Mr. Henshaw has brought together in a thoroughly satisfactory manner, the result of his studies on Hawaiian birds, As a sympathetic and keen observer of Nature, the author is well known, and the present treatise is easily the best work we have on the natural history of the island avifauna. Part I consists of introductory matter, describing Hawaii as an Ornithological Field, Obstacles to Ornithological Studies in Hawaiian Islands, Destruction of Hawaiian Forests, Environmental Changes Disastrous to Hawaiian Birds, Faunal Zones, Diseases of Hawaiian Birds, Origin of Hawaiian Birds, Ornithological Knowledge of Hawaiian Natives, and History of Ornithological Investigations in the Islands, all of which is remarkably interesting reading. Part II is the Descriptive portion. Under each species is given a biographical sketch and a short description... It is probable that few persons in this country have any conception of the difficulties attending the observation of native land birds in the islands. Mr. Henshaw's contribution is therefore so much the more valuable" - Walter K. Fisher. - The Condor, 1903

Book excerpt: Birds of Hawaii is a concise guide to Hawaiian birdwatching. The book is divided into three sections: "Native Birds", "Stray Variants to the Hawaiian Islands" and "Imported Birds." Each bird is identified by its scientific name, its common name(or names), and in the case of native birds, by its Hawaiian name. These designations are followed by a description of the bird's essential characteristics, its habitat, its distinctive song or cry, and its habits. The descriptions are enhanced by vivid details from the author's own experience in observing his subjects. Twenty plates in full color, comprising illustrations of more than 150 different species of birds, together with a selection of black and white photographs, provide the reader with an easy means for identification of the birds described.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the Hawaiian Islands: Being a Complete List of the Birds of the Hawaiian Possessions, With Notes on Their Habits Of recent years the study of nature has become popular and widespread in America. Not only is Nature Study taught in many of the schools, but the publications relating thereto have become very numerous. Unfortunately these various treatises apply wholly or in large part to the birds, insects, animals and plants of the mainland, few or none of which are found in the Hawaiian Islands. Such publications are hence of comparatively little use to island teachers and pupils or to the Islanders generally. There being at present no popular work upon Hawaiian birds, the present little volume has been prepared with the view of breaking ground in this department, and with the hope that it may prove of assistance to those who are already bird-lovers and, as well, may stimulate others to become such. For superbly illustrated volumes upon Hawaiian birds the reader is referred to the fine works issued by Mr. Walter Rothschild and by Mr. Scott B. Wilson. Since the first part of the present treatise was published, the Bishop Museum has issued a "Key to the Birds of the Hawaiian Group" by W. A. Bryan. This valuable work supplies a ready means for the identification of all the birds thus far found upon the islands, and should prove a welcome and efficient aid to a knowledge of the subject. Much of the preliminary field-work in relation to the island plants, insects, shells and fishes has already been done by private investigators or by public institutions, and the results have been published. (Note the extensive and valuable memoirs on various branches of biology issued conjointly by the Royal Society of London, British Association for the Advancement of Science and the Bishop Museum under title of "Fauna Hawaiiaensis"). Book excerpt: Winner of the 2011 Ka Palapala Po‘okela Award of Excellence in Natural Science, Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association Hawai‘i is home to some of the most beautiful and sought after birds in the world. From the offshore waters, where graceful seabirds glide on the cool, refreshing trade winds, to the lush ancient forests of the mountains, where colorful endemic honeycreepers reside, Hawai‘i’s birds are wonderfully diverse. Introduced species and long-distance migrants contribute to the splendid assortment. Some island bird species are extremely abundant and instantly familiar since we encounter them daily in our outdoor activities. Others are so rare they are glimpsed only once in a lifetime. In these magnificent islands there is something for birders of every sort. Superbly illustrated in color by the author and Jack Jeffrey, two of Hawai‘i’s best nature photographers, this guide includes nearly every species of bird on land and at sea in the main Hawaiian Islands. In total, 170 species or subspecies are described and illustrated. This comprehensive work is an essential resource for those who are interested in identifying, locating, and learning more about the avifauna of Hawai‘i.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hawaii’s forest bird community is the most insular and most endangered in the world and serves as a case study for threatened species globally. Ten have disappeared in the past thirty years, nine are critically endangered, and even common species are currently in decline. Thane K. Pratt, his coeditors, and collaborators, all leaders in their field, describe the research and conservation efforts over the past thirty years to save Hawaii’s forest birds. They also offer the most comprehensive look at the reasons for these extinctions and attempts to overcome them in the future. Among the topics covered in this book are trends in bird populations, environmental and genetic factors limiting population size, avian diseases, predators, and competing alien bird species. Color plates by award-winning local photographer Jack Jeffrey illustrate all living species discussed or described.

Book excerpt: This is the first field guide to the identification of the birds of the islands of the tropical Pacific, including the Hawaiian Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, southeastern Polynesia, and Micronesia. It is intended both as a reference for the expert and as an introduction to birding in the region for the novice. Small enough to be carried afield, it contains much previously unpublished information about behavior, vocalizations, ecology, and distribution. The forty-five color plates depict all plumages of all bird species that breed in the islands, as well as of those that regularly visit them and the surrounding oceans, and of most species believed to be extinct on the islands. Black-and-white figures show many of the rarer visitors. Introductory sections discuss the tropical Pacific as an environment for birds, problems of birding on islands, and bird conservation. Appendixes include maps of the island groups and a thorough bibliography.
