Un volet théorique présente un modèle simple de loi de comportement thermohydromécanique (THM). Le concept de contraintes effectives est élargi aux sols non saturés, avec l’introduction d’une contrainte capillaire. Cette contrainte capillaire est basée sur un modèle micro-structural et calculée à partir de forces d’attraction dues aux ménisques d’eau. Le phénomène d’écrouissage dû à la désaturation du matériau et à l’effet thermique sont modélisés avec un nombre réduit de paramètres des matériaux et basé sur des modèles existants. Le comportement THM est qualitativement et quantitativement modélisé en utilisant les données expérimentales, incluant les chemins de drainage sous contrainte mécanique, avec passage entre les états saturé et non saturé, les chemins de chauffe sous une succion constante, et un chemin déviatorique avec succion et une température imposées. Le volet instrumental et expérimental présente le développement d’un oedometre permettant de réaliser des essais à température et succion imposée. Des chargements THM ont été réalisés sur de la kaolinite P300 et de la bentonite du Wyoming.

Book excerpt: Le travail présenté dans cette recherche essentiellement expérimentale a porté sur l'étude du comportement hydrique et mécanique des sols non satures. Les chemins de compactage et de drainage-humidification ont porté sur des mélanges de sable d'Hostun avec le limon de Jossigny. Ils ont permis la caractérisation de ces matériaux et ont mis en évidence l'influence des parametres de la granulométrie sur les caractéristiques de l'état de sol. L'effet de la fraction des particules fines a été montre sur la densité sèche, la teneur en eau, la pression négative a l'OPN et la boucle d'hystérésis ainsi que la pression de désaturation. Des corrélations et des relations de régression ont été proposées. La modélisation des essais de drainage a été faite par une approche physique basée sur le modèle de Taibi, et par une approche mathématique utilisant les modèles de Van Genuchten et de Fredlund-Xing. Les chemins triaxiaux et œdométriques ont été réalisés sur le limon de Jossigny normalement consolide et compacte, sèche à de moyennes (ua uw = 2 MPa) et de fortes pressions négatives (150 MPa à 400 MPa). Ces dernières sont susceptibles de se produire au voisinage des colis de stockage de déchets radioactifs. Les essais triaxiaux a moyennes pressions négatives ont servi de références a la validation du modèle élaboré à l'ECP (Modaressi et Abou Bekr). Sous l'effet de la forte désaturation, le comportement de l'argile séchée est modifié. L'effet de la pression négative sur la résistance et l'augmentation de la fragilité est montré clairement. Une comparaison des essais sur échantillons compactes à l'OPN et à forte densité et normalement consolidés a été faite. Les phénomènes de fatigue et d'endommagement ont été étudiés. Les essais sont interprètes avec les contraintes effectives étendues de Taibi. Un aspect original du comportement a été observé : les indices des vides finaux des essais se regroupent sur un palier horizontal proche du palier de retrait du matériau. Les essais œdométriques sur échantillons à moyennes pressions négatives (1.6 MPa à 50 MPa) ont montré qu'après une phase de compression pseudo-élastique, le matériau se déforme plastiquement. On retrouve que la désaturation élargit le domaine surconsolidé. On observe une augmentation du degré de saturation et une diminution de la pression négative quand la contrainte verticale augmente. Des simulations numériques avec le modèle de Hujeux étendu aux sols non satures ont été faites pour les chemins de compactage, drainage et triaxiaux. Les simulations montrent que le modèle est en mesure de reproduire quantitativement de façon satisfaisante les phénomènes caractéristiques du comportement des sols partiellement satures.

La première concerne une étude bibliographique des travaux réalisés sur les sols compactés et le comportement du sol non saturé. On présente aussi les travaux réalisés sur les sols non saturés, l'effet de la succion sur la compressibilité et la courbe de résistance et l'effet des cycles de séchage -humidification sur le potentiel de gonflement. Cette partie s'achève par une revue des différents modèles développés pour le sol non saturé. La seconde est consacrée à la déscription du sol étudié. Aprés la présentation des caractéristiques mécaniques et intrinsèques de ce matériau, on présente la méthode de préparation et une analyse de l'homogénéité des échantillons étudiés. La troisième partie présente les résultats d'une étude réalisée à l'œdomètre à succion contrôlée. L'effet des cycles de séchage - humidification sur la courbe de compressibilité est étudié. Les paramètres de BBM modèle sont estimés et utilisés pour tester le modèle sur des essais avec ou sans cycle. Enfin, dans cette dernière partie, une étude à l'appareil triaxial est présentée. Cette partie traite deux aspects, le premier sur l'effet de la succion sur la courbe de résistance et le deuxième étudie l'effet des cycles de séchage - humidification sur le comportement du sol à l'état saturé au cours du cisaillement.

Book excerpt: Forest decline became a matter of public and scientific concern in France in 1983 when conifers in the Vosges mountains were found to exhibit unusual crown deterioration. An impassioned controversy on a supposedly large scale forest health problem was then in full swing in Central Europe. A co-ordinated research programme entitled DEFORPA ("Deperissement des For~ts et Pollution AtmospMrique") was launched in 1984. This programme ran from 1984 to 1991 and a number of projects are still in progress. The Programme was sponsored by three French ministries (Enviroument, Agriculture and Forestry, Research and Technologyl), several state agencies, various regional authorities and the Commission of the European Communities (DO xn and DG VI). Initially, emphasis was solely laid on the understanding of forest decline in the mountainous areas - because damage was most obvious there - in relation to natural and man-made factors. Air pollution was given high but not overwhelming priority. Thus, the DEFORPA Programme was not in its essence a nation-wide assessment of air pollution effects, unlike a number of national acidification research programmes in Europe and North America. During. the programme, however, the areas of concern expanded. In particular, research into water acidification in the Vosges mountains was developed in parallel with the DEFORPA Programme, and possible eutrophication of the ground flora in northeastern France became the subject of new research.
