Dans une première partie on présente de nouvelles méthodes numériques de type semi-Lagrangien pour résoudre l'équation de Vlasov sur des maillages non structurés de l'espace des phases. L'équation de Vlasov mettant en jeu des phénomènes physiques multi-échelles on présente aussi des méthodes numériques adaptatives basées sur une analyse multi-résolution par ondelettes, conduisant à un raffinement adaptatif de maillages. L'apparition des supercalculateurs massivement parallèle permet de considérer ces méthodes en plusieurs dimensions dans l'espace des phases. Dans le but d'appliquer ces nouvelles méthodes aux domaines de la physique des plasmas et de la propagation des faisceaux de particules chargées on considère le système de Vlasov-Poisson à deux, trois et quatre dimensions dans l'espace des phases. Dans la deuxième partie on présente des preuves rigoureuses de la convergence de plusieurs schémas numériques pour le système de Vlasov-Poisson et des estimations a priori sur la vitesse de convergence des suites de solutions construites vers la solution du problème continu dans le cadre des solutions fortes et classiques. D'abord on démontre la convergence d'un schéma semi-Lagrangien sur un maillage non structuré de l'espace des phases avec des hypothèses de régularité minimales sur les données initiales. Lorsque les solutions classiques sont assez régulières, on prouve la convergence de plusieurs classes de schémas semi-Lagrangien d'ordre élevé selon que l'on envisage des reconstructions à partir de bases de polynômes de Lagrange symétriques, de B-splines et d'ondelettes. Enfin on montre la convergence d'un schéma semi-Lagrangien dans lequel on propage les gradients de la fonction de distribution afin d'obtenir une reconstruction d'ordre élevé et stable de la solution.

On rencontre les équations aux dérivées partielles à retard dans de très nombreux domaines : physique, dynamique de populations, biologie, contrôle optimal, etc. D'une manière générale, les retards apparaissent à cause du temps nécessaire pour que le système réponde à une certaine évolution ou parce qu'un certain seuil doit être atteint avant que le système ne soit activé. Les équations à retard discret sont définies à partir de distributions de Dirac en des points de la demi-droite négative. Les équations aux dérivées partielles de type neutre font intervenir le produit de composition d'opérateurs de derivation en temps et espace, et de mesures à support sur la demi-droite temporelle négative. Ces dernières équations trouvent leur motivation dans l'apparition récente de modèles de circuits électriques constitués d'une grande quantité d'oscillateurs. C'est un exemple classique, dans la théorie des équations différentielles, qu'un circuit électrique non linéaire peut être réduit à une équation de type neutre. L'étude de ce problème a été initiée, ces dernières années, par j.Wu et ses collaborateurs. Il est bien connu que la méthode des semi-groupes permet de traiter une très large classe d'équations aux dérivées partielles à retard et de type neutre. Néanmoins, il existe des situations ou les opérateurs qui interviennent dans ces équations sont à domaine non dense et par conséquent, n'engendrent pas de semi-groupes. La méthode que nous avons utilisée dans cette thèse nous a permis de surmonter cette difficulté. Les principaux résultats obtenus dans ce domaine sont : des résultats d'existence locale et globale, la propriété du semi-groupe et son générateur infinitésimal, la décomposition spectrale de l'espace d'état en somme directe de sous-espaces invariants par le semi-groupe linéaire, des résultats d'existence de solutions bornées, périodiques et presque-periodiques, et l'existence d'un semi-groupe non linéaire par la formule exponentielle de Crandall-Liggett. Nous avons aussi démontré le théorème de bifurcation de Hopf locale pour les équations aux dérivées partielles à retard, ce qui correspond à un résultat d'existence de solutions périodiques.

It starts with the basics of the geometry of symplectic vector spaces. Then, symplectic manifolds are defined and explored. In addition to the essential classic results, such as Darboux's theorem, more recent results and ideas are also included here, such as symplectic capacity and pseudoholomorphic curves. These ideas have revolutionized the subject. The main examples of symplectic manifolds are given, including the cotangent bundle, Kähler manifolds, and coadjoint orbits. Further principal ideas are carefully examined, such as Hamiltonian vector fields, the Poisson bracket, and connections with contact manifolds. Berndt describes some of the close connections between symplectic geometry and mathematical physics in the last two chapters of the book. In particular, the moment map is defined and explored, both mathematically and in its relation to physics. He also introduces symplectic reduction, which is an important tool for reducing the number of variables in a physical system and for constructing new symplectic manifolds from old. The final chapter is on quantization, which uses symplectic methods to take classical mechanics to quantum mechanics. This section includes a discussion of the Heisenberg group and the Weil (or metaplectic) representation of the symplectic group. Several appendices provide background material on vector bundles, on cohomology, and on Lie groups and Lie algebras and their representations. Berndt's presentation of symplectic geometry is a clear and concise introduction to the major methods and applications of the subject, and requires only a minimum of prerequisites. This book would be an excellent text for a graduate course or as a source for anyone who wishes to learn about symplectic geometry.
