Book excerpt: NOUS PRESENTONS UNE ETUDE EXPERIMENTALE DU PROCESSUS DE PHOTOEMISSION A FAIBLE ENERGIE D'EXCITATION DANS UN SUPER-RESEAU SEMI-CONDUCTEUR ACTIVE EN AFFINITE ELECTRONIQUE NEGATIVE. LES ENERGIES DES DIFFERENTES TRANSITIONS OPTIQUES DEPUIS LES MINIBANDES DE VALENCE VERS LES MINI-BANDES DE CONDUCTION SONT DETERMINEES EXPERIMENTALEMENT A PARTIR DES COURBES DE RENDEMENT DE PHOTOEMISSION. ELLES S'ACCORDENT AVEC LES VALEURS QUE NOUS CALCULONS DANS UN MODELE DE FONCTIONS ENVELOPPES. A PARTIR DE L'ANALYSE DES COURBES DE DISTRIBUTION EN ENERGIE NOUS OBTENONS DEUX TYPES D'INFORMATIONS. D'UNE PART NOUS OBSERVONS DES CONTRIBUTIONS CARACTERISTIQUES DU PROCESSUS DE PHOTOEXCITATION, QUI NOUS PERMETTENT DE DETERMINER LA DISPERSION DES PREMIERES MINIBANDES DE VALENCE DU SUPER-RESEAU DANS LE PLAN PERPENDICULAIRE A L'AXE DE QUANTIFICATION. AU-DELA DU VOISINAGE IMMEDIAT DU CENTRE DE LA PREMIERE ZONE DE BRILLOUIN, LA DISPERSION DE CES MINIBANDES DEVIENT SIMILAIRE A CELLE DES PREMIERES BANDES DE VALENCE DANS LE GAAS MASSIF. D'AUTRE PART, NOUS OBSERVONS DES STRUCTURES CORRESPONDANT A L'EMISSION D'ELECTRONS DEPUIS LES PREMIERS NIVEAUX QUANTIQUES DU SUPER-RESEAU DANS LA VALLEE CENTRALE ET DANS LES VALLEES LATERALES DE LA BANDE DE CONDUCTION. IL APPARAIT DANS CES RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX QUE LA DYNAMIQUE DU PROCESSUS DE PHOTOEMISSION FAVORISE L'ACCUMULATION DANS LES NIVEAUX DES VALLEES LATERALES PLUTOT QUE DANS LES MINIBANDES SUPERIEURES DE LA VALLEE CENTRALE. PAR AILLEURS, DU A LA LEVEE DE LA DEGENERESCENCE DES BANDES DE TROUS LOURDS ET DE TROUS LEGERS AUX MAXIMUM DE LA BANDE DE VALENCE, UNE POPULATION D'ELECTRONS COMPLETEMENT POLARISES PEUT ETRE THEORIQUEMENT PHOTOCREEE PAR POMPAGE OPTIQUE. LES POLARISATIONS DE LUMINESCENCE DE 70% QUE NOUS AVONS OBTENUES MONTRENT QUE CE TYPE DE STRUCTURE PEUT ALORS ETRE UTILISE COMME SOURCE D'ELECTRONS DE FORTE POLARISATION

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon, as a single-crystal semiconductor, has sparked a revolution in the field of electronics and touched nearly every field of science and technology. Though available abundantly as silica and in various other forms in nature, silicon is difficult to separate from its chemical compounds because of its reactivity. As a solid, silicon is chemically inert and stable, but growing it as a single crystal creates many technological challenges. Crystal Growth and Evaluation of Silicon for VLSI and ULSI is one of the first books to cover the systematic growth of silicon single crystals and the complete evaluation of silicon, from sand to useful wafers for device fabrication. Written for engineers and researchers working in semiconductor fabrication industries, this practical text: Describes different techniques used to grow silicon single crystals Explains how grown single-crystal ingots become a complete silicon wafer for integrated-circuit fabrication Reviews different methods to evaluate silicon wafers to determine suitability for device applications Analyzes silicon wafers in terms of resistivity and impurity concentration mapping Examines the effect of intentional and unintentional impurities Explores the defects found in regular silicon-crystal lattice Discusses silicon wafer preparation for VLSI and ULSI processing Crystal Growth and Evaluation of Silicon for VLSI and ULSI is an essential reference for different approaches to the selection of the basic silicon-containing compound, separation of silicon as metallurgical-grade pure silicon, subsequent purification, single-crystal growth, and defects and evaluation of the deviations within the grown crystals.

Book excerpt: Polyoxometalates (POMs) form a large, distinctive class of molecular inorganic compounds of unrivaled electronic versatility and structural variation, with impacts ranging from chemistry, catalysis, and materials science to biology, and medicine. This book covers the basic principles governing the structure, bonding and reactivity of these metal-oxygen cluster anions and the major developments in their molecular science. The book comprises three sections. The first covers areas ranging from topological principles via synthesis and stability to reactivity in solution. It also focuses on the physical methods currently used to extract information on the molecular and electronic structures as well as the physical properties of these clusters. The second part reviews different types of POMs, focusing on those systems that currently impact other areas of interest, such as supramolecular chemistry, nanochemistry and molecular magnetism. The third section is devoted to POM-based materials and their applications and prospects in catalysis and materials science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the deep-ultraviolet (DUV) laser technology continues to mature, an increasing number of industrial and manufacturing applications are emerging. For example, the new generation of semiconductor inspection systems is being pushed to image at increasingly shorter DUV wavelengths to facilitate inspection of deep sub-micron features in integrated circuits. DUV-sensitive charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras are in demand for these applications. Although CCD cameras that are responsive at DUV wavelengths are now available, their long-term stability is still a major concern. This book describes the degradation mechanisms and long-term performance of CCDs in the DUV, along with new results of device performance at these wavelengths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas turbines are widely used in industry for power generation and as a power source at hard to reach locations where other possibilities for electrical power supplies are insufficient. New ways of producing greener energy is needed to reduce emission levels. This can be achieved by increasing the combustion temperature of gas turbines. High combustion temperatures can be detrimental and degrade critical components. This raises the demands on the high temperature performance of the superalloys used in gas turbine components. These components are frequently subjected to different cyclic loads combined with for example dwell-times and overloads at elevated temperatures, which can influence the crack growth. Dwell-times have been shown to accelerate crack growth and change cracking behaviour in both Inconel 718, Haynes 282 and Hastelloy X. On the other hand, overloads at the beginning of a dwell-time cycle have been shown to retard the dwell-time effect on crack growth in Inconel 718. More experiments and microstructural investigations are needed to better understand these effects. The work presented in this thesis was conducted under the umbrella of the research program Turbo Power; "High temperature fatigue crack propagation in nickel-based superalloys", where I have mainly looked at fatigue crack growth mechanisms in superalloys subjected to dwell-fatigue, which can have a devastating effect on crack propagation behaviour. Mechanical testing was performed under operation-like cycles in order to achieve representative microstructures and material data for the subsequent microstructural work. Microstructures were investigated using light optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques such as electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The outcome of this work has shown that there is a significant increase in crack growth rate when dwell-times are introduced at maximum load (0 % overload) in the fatigue cycle. With the introduction of a dwell-time there is also a shift from transgranular to intergranular crack growth for both Inconel 718 and Haynes 282. The crack growth rate decreases with increasing overload levels in Inconel 718 when an overload is applied prior to the dwell-time. At high temperature, intergranular crack growth was observed in Inconel 718 as a result of oxidation and the creation of nanometric voids. Another observed growth mechanism was crack advance along ?-phase boundaries with subsequent oxidation of the ?-phase. This thesis comprises two parts. Part I gives an introduction to the field of superalloys and the acting microstructural mechanisms related to fatigue and crack propagation. Part II consists of five appended papers, which report the work completed as part of the project.

This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global energy consumption is increasing and together with global warming from greenhouse gas emission, create the need for more environmental friendly energy production processes. Higher efficiency of biomass power plants can be achieved by increasing temperature and pressure in the boiler section and this would increase the generation of electricity along with the reduction in emission of greenhouse gases e.g. CO2. The power generation must also be flexible to be able to follow the demands of the energy market, this results in a need for cyclic operating conditions with alternating output and multiple start-ups and shut-downs. Because of the demands of flexibility, higher temperature and higher pressure in the boiler section of future biomass power plants, the demands on improved mechanical properties of the materials of these components are also increased. Properties like creep strength, thermomechanical fatigue resistance and high temperature corrosion resistance are critical for materials used in the next generation biomass power plants. Austenitic stainless steels are known to possess such good high temperature properties and are relatively cheap compared to the nickel-base alloys, which are already operating at high temperature cyclic conditions in other applications. The behaviour of austenitic stainless steels during these widened operating conditions are not yet fully understood. The aim of this licentiate thesis is to increase the knowledge of the mechanical behaviour at high temperature cyclic conditions for austenitic stainless steels. This is done by the use of thermomechanical fatigue- and creepfatigue testing at elevated temperatures. For safety reasons, the effect of prolonged service degradation is investigated by pre-ageing before mechanical testing. Microscopy is used to investigate the microstructural development and resulting damage behaviour of the austenitic stainless steels after testing. The results show that creep-fatigue interaction damage, creep damage and oxidation assisted cracking are present at high temperature cyclic conditions. In addition, simulated service degradation resulted in a detrimental embrittling effect due to the deterioration by the microstructural evolution.

Book excerpt: "This special issue of Corrosion Engineering Science and Technology is dedicated to the study of corrosion of objects from historical sites. The issue contains contributions from the 2009 EUROCORR session on Corrosion of Archaeological and Heritage Artefacts organised by the European Federation of Corrosion's working party and commissioned articles on other key issues. The objective is to give the reader a broad understanding of corrosion of ancient materials, for the most part metal but also glass. Articles shed light on a range of analytical approaches related to the study of the complex systems that make up historical artifacts. In order to arrive at an understanding of the nanometric organisation of rust layers and interphases, such studies must be approached on a macroscopic scale. Techniques used include; macrophotography, synchrotron radiation and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that ensure results that are both exhaustive and representative of particular observations. This issue demonstrates the wealth of approaches possible in the study of the corrosion of ancient materials."
