Davy, in his attempt in 1817 to understand the science associated with the safety lamp he had invented a few years earlier, undertook a series of studies that led him to make the observation that a jet of gas, primarily methane, would cause a platinum wire to continue to glow even though the flame was extinguished and there was no visible flame. Dobereiner reported in 1823 the results of a similar investigation and observed that spongy platina would cause the ignition of a stream of hydrogen in air. Based on this observation Dobereiner invented the first lighter. His lighter employed hydrogen (generated from zinc and sulfuric acid) which passed over finely divided platinum and which ignited the gas. Thousands of these lighters were used over a number of years. Dobereiner refused to file a patent for his lighter, commenting that "I love science more than money." Davy thought the action of platinum was the result of heat while Dobereiner believed the ~ffect ~as a manifestation of electricity. Faraday became interested in the subject and published a paper on it in 1834; he concluded that the cause for this reaction was similar to other reactions.

Climate change has been recognized as a major threat to the global environment. Because of insufficient field data, rice-growing countries face a problem when trying to comply with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change stipulations to compile a national inventory of emissions and to explore mitigation options. Given the expected doubling in rice production in Asia, the need to evaluate the interaction between climate change and rice production is critical to forming a sound basis for future directions of technology developments by policy makers, agriculturists, environmentalists, rice producers, and rice consumers. The present book comprises two sections. The first part documents a comprehensive overview of the results achieved from an interregional research effort to quantify methane emission from major rice ecosystems and to identify efficient mitigation options. This research report broadens understanding of the contribution of rice cultivation to methane emissions and clarifies that emissions are relatively low, except in specific rice ecosystems, and that these high emissions could be ameliorated without sacrificing yield. The second section shows results from other projects that investigated the role of rice cultivators in field and laboratory approaches. The findings represent inputs for future modeling approaches in the role of rice cultivators. The expanded database generated by other projects is reflected in modeling efforts.

The evaluation employed a mixed-methods approach that combined quantitative and qualitative information to document program resources and activities and to illustrate program outcomes, including information from in-country site visits. The report also presents some recommendations for how data collection could be improved to answer more sophisticated questions in the future about the effectiveness of GMI and the value added by the department's contributions.

Methane emissions, about 60% of which come from human activities, are a major contributor to global warming, second only to carbon dioxide (CO2). Methane is relatively short-lived in the atmosphere but is 80 times more potent than CO2 at trapping heat over a 20-year period. Together with reducing CO2 emissions, rapid and sustained reductions in methane emissions are critical to limit both near- and long-term warming in future decades. But given the many barriers to achieving needed emissions reductions at scale, researchers are exploring the potential of technologies to remove methane from the atmosphere. A Research Agenda Toward Atmospheric Methane Removal is the first report of a two-phase study to assess the need and potential for atmospheric methane removal. This report identifies priority research that should be addressed within 3-5 years so that a second-phase assessment could more robustly assess the technical, economic, and social viability of technologies to remove atmospheric methane at climate-relevant scales. The research agenda presented in this report includes foundational research that would help us better understand atmospheric methane removal while also filling knowledge gaps in related fields, and systems research that seek to address what developing and/or deploying atmospheric methane removal at scale would entail. A Research Agenda Toward Atmospheric Methane Removal also assesses five atmospheric methane removal technologies that would accelerate the conversion of methane to a less radiatively potent form or physically remove methane from the atmosphere and store it elsewhere.

Book excerpt: More economical and efficient means are required to decrease or to recover greenhouse gases (GHG) exhausted into the environment, and to decrease the amount of wastewater that is degrading the water bodies worldwide. Therefore the objective of this research is to develop a system that will treat both carbon dioxide and a high strength wastewater; for this purpose an Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor was used. Previous studies showed that carbon dioxide could be converted to methane with organic acids. In this study, the addition of carbon dioxide will act as the co-substrate needed in order to treat higher concentrations of the toxic pollutant phenol in wastewater without any recirculation of the effluent. This is based on previous studies that showed that higher concentrations (1260 mg/L phenol) can be treated if a co-substrate is added. An anaerobic biomass used for this experiment was taken from two reactors treating sucrose and acetic acid. Then, it was acclimated by increasing stepwise the concentration of phenol, while reducing the concentration of sucrose and/or acetic acid. Methanogenic activity tests were performed to evaluate the toxicity limits of phenol toward the biomass. Two sets of two reactors were used. The first set contained the biomass acclimated with sucrose; the second set contained the biomass acclimated with acetic acid. Control reactors had phenol added as the carbon source; whereas in the other reactors, carbon dioxide was added as the co-substrate. The parameters monitored were chemical oxygen demand, volatile suspended solids, methane content of the biogas and production, phenol concentrations, alkalinity, and dissolved carbon dioxide. It was shown that both CO 2 and phenol could be degraded in an UASB reactor with reduction values that ranged from 86-88% and 86-94% respectively. Total COD reduction ranged from 92-97% and methane content in the biogas ranged from 64-70%. The biomass showed a steady organic content throughout the experiment after a sudden decrease during the acclimation period. Overall, the reactors with the best performances were R4 (acetic acid-fed biomass with CO 2) and R2 (sucrose-fed biomass with CO 2) although this last one showed some performance similarities with R3 (acetic acid-fed biomass without CO 2) and the reactor which was more prone to loading shock was R1. Carbon dioxide, a waste gas, poses a great advantage in the anaerobic process since it was proven to be a good co-substrate in the biodegradation of a high strength wastewater, with a higher methane recovery. Adding carbon dioxide to UASB reactors in order to boost degradation instead of releasing it to the environment is a good remediation proposal.
