Book excerpt: J'AI COMPARE LES PREDICTIONS DE L'APPROCHE PERTURBATIVE LAGRANGIENNE DU PREMIER ORDRE (APPROXIMATION DE ZELDOVICH) ET DU SECOND ORDRE (L2) AUX SIMULATIONS NUMERIQUES N-CORPS DANS LE CAS DE FLUCTUATIONS GAUSSIENNES D'INDICE SPECTRAL -2 ET -1. LE LISSAGE DES CONDITIONS INITIALES AMELIORE NETTEMENT LES PERFORMANCES DE CES APPROXIMATIONS ET JE MONTRE QUE L'ECHELLE DE LISSAGE INITIAL OPTIMALE EST CELLE QUI MAXIMISE LA VARIANCE DU CONTRASTE DE DENSITE FINAL. DANS LE REGIME NON LINEAIRE, L2 S'AVERE PLUS PERFORMANTE EN CE QUI CONCERNE LA STATISTIQUE DU CONTRASTE DE DENSITE, PARTICULIEREMENT SI LA COMPARAISON EST FAITE A VARIANCE EGALE, ET LA DESCRIPTION DU CHAMP DE VITESSE. J'AI UTILISE L2 POUR CALCULER LE MOMENT D'ORDRE TROIS RENORMALISE S3Z DU CONTRASTE DE DENSITE DANS L'ESPACE DES DECALAGES SPECTRAUX, AINSI QUE SA TRANSFORMEE DE FOURIER, LE BISPECTRE. JE MONTRE QUE S3Z EST QUASIMENT INSENSIBLE AUX PARAMETRES COSMOLOGIQUES OMEGA ET LAMBDA ET CONSTITUE DONC UN MOYEN ROBUSTE DE CARACTERISER LA STATISTIQUE DES GRANDES STRUCTURES. LE CALCUL DU BISPECTRE PERMET D'ENVISAGER LA MESURE DU FACTEUR DE BIAIS A GRANDE ECHELLE A PARTIR DE CATALOGUES DE GALAXIES. A PARTIR DU CALCUL DES PREMIERES CORRECTIONS NON-LINEAIRES DE LA VARIANCE, CONFIRME PAR DES SIMULATIONS N-CORPS, NOUS MONTRONS QUE LA PUISSANCE RELATIVE DES PERTURBATIONS A PETITE ET GRANDE ECHELLE INFLUENCE FORTEMENT L'EVOLUTION DES STRUCTURES (PREVIRIALISATION). DANS LE CADRE DE LA THEORIE PERTURBATIVE EULERIENNE LA FONCTION DE DISTRIBUTION DE LA DIVERGENCE DE LA VITESSE DEPEND DE OMEGA MAIS PAS DU BIAIS SPATIAL. NOUS MONTRONS ENTRE AUTRES QUE LA MESURE DE OMEGA A PARTIR DU CHAMP DE VITESSE EST POSSIBLE LORSQUE SEULES LES VITESSES RADIALES DES GALAXIES SONT ACCESSIBLES. J'AI SIMULE LA CONTRIBUTION DES GALAXIES LOINTAINES AUX FLUCTUATIONS DU CIEL INFRAROUGE ET MILLIMETRIQUE, ET J'AI ETUDIE LEUR INFLUENCE SUR LA MESURE DES ANISOTROPIES DU FOND COSMOLOGIQUE AINSI QUE LEUR OBSERVABILITE PAR LES SATELLITES ISO ET COBRAS/SAMBA

Book excerpt: This new, third volume of Cohen-Tannoudji's groundbreaking textbook covers advanced topics of quantum mechanics such as uncorrelated and correlated identical particles, the quantum theory of the electromagnetic field, absorption, emission and scattering of photons by atoms, and quantum entanglement. Written in a didactically unrivalled manner, the textbook explains the fundamental concepts in seven chapters which are elaborated in accompanying complements that provide more detailed discussions, examples and applications. * Completing the success story: the third and final volume of the quantum mechanics textbook written by 1997 Nobel laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his colleagues Bernard Diu and Franck Laloë * As easily comprehensible as possible: all steps of the physical background and its mathematical representation are spelled out explicitly * Comprehensive: in addition to the fundamentals themselves, the books comes with a wealth of elaborately explained examples and applications Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he also studied and received his PhD in 1962. In 1973 he became Professor of atomic and molecular physics at the Collège des France. His main research interests were optical pumping, quantum optics and atom-photon interactions. In 1997, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, together with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Bernard Diu was Professor at the Denis Diderot University (Paris VII). He was engaged in research at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and High Energy where his focus was on strong interactions physics and statistical mechanics. Franck Laloë was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Colloquium "Analysis, Manifolds and Physics" organized in honour of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat by her friends, collaborators and former students, on June 3, 4 and 5, 1992 in Paris. Its title accurately reflects the domains to which Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat has made essential contributions. Since the rise of General Relativity, the geometry of Manifolds has become a non-trivial part of space-time physics. At the same time, Functional Analysis has been of enormous importance in Quantum Mechanics, and Quantum Field Theory. Its role becomes decisive when one considers the global behaviour of solutions of differential systems on manifolds. In this sense, General Relativity is an exceptional theory in which the solutions of a highly non-linear system of partial differential equations define by themselves the very manifold on which they are supposed to exist. This is why a solution of Einstein's equations cannot be physically interpreted before its global behaviour is known, taking into account the entire hypothetical underlying manifold. In her youth, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat contributed in a spectacular way to this domain stretching between physics and mathematics, when she gave the proof of the existence of solutions to Einstein's equations on differential manifolds of a quite general type. The methods she created have been worked out by the French school of mathematics, principally by Jean Leray. Her first proof of the local existence and uniqueness of solutions of Einstein's equations inspired Jean Leray's theory of general hyperbolic systems.

Book excerpt: The study of extraterrestrial magnetic fields is a relatively new one, confirmation of the existance of the first such field (that of our Sun) having come a s late as 1908. In the past 30 years a great ammount of knowledge has been accumulated on Cosmic Magnetism, which has turned out to be a truly fascinating topic for study. Percy Seymour's book is the first to deal with the topic in a non-mathematical way, and he offers a fine introduction to his subject. The first three chapters consolidate our knowledge on magnetism in general and the magnetic field of the Earth, as well as discussing the reasons for studying astronomy and cosmic magnetism in particular. The remainder of the book is devoted to the main areas of cosmic magnetism - solar, plantetary and interplanetary fields, fields in stars and pulsars, fields of the milky way and fields in other galaxies. Cosmic Magnetism in an ideal book for sixth-formers and undergraduates studying physics or astronomy and will also appeal to amateur astronomers. as previous work on this topic has been 'hidden' in specialised academic journals.

Book excerpt: Beyond the range of optical perception--and of ordinary imaginings--a new and violent universe lay undetected until the advent of space exploration. Supernovae, black holes, quasars and pulsars--these were the secrets of the highenergy world revealed when, for the first time, astronomers attached their instruments to rockets and lofted them beyond the earth's x-ray-absorbing atmosphere. The X-Ray Universe is the story of these explorations and the fantastic new science they brought into being. It is a first-hand account: Riccardo Giacconi is one of the principal pioneers of the field, and Wallace Tucker is a theorist who worked closely with him at many critical periods. The book carries the reader from the early days of the Naval Research Laboratory through the era of V-2 rocketry, Sputnik, and the birth of NASA, to the launching of the Einstein X-Ray Observatory. But this is by no means just a history. Behind the suspenseful, sometimes humorous details of human personality grappling with high technology lies a sophisticated exposition of current cosmology and astrophysics, from the rise and fall of the steady-state theory to the search for the missing mass of the universe.

Joseph Weber's General Relativity and Gravitational Waves offers a classic treatment of the subject. Appropriate for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, this text remains ever relevant. Brief but thorough in its introduction to the foundations of general relativity, it also examines the elements of Riemannian geometry and tensor calculus applicable to this field. Approximately a quarter of the contents explores theoretical and experimental aspects of gravitational radiation. The final chapter focuses on selected topics related to general relativity, including the equations of motion, unified field theories, Friedman's solution of the cosmological problem, and the Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity. Exercises. Index.

Book excerpt: This book describes detection techniques used to search for and analyze gravitational waves (GW). It covers the whole domain of GW science, starting from the theory and ending with the experimental techniques (both present and future) used to detect them. The theoretical sections of the book address the theory of general relativity and of GW, followed by the theory of GW detection. The various sources of GW are described as well as the methods used to analyse them and to extract their physical parameters. It includes an analysis of the consequences of GW observations in terms of astrophysics as well as a description of the different detectors that exist and that are planned for the future. With the recent announcement of GW detection and the first results from LISA Pathfinder, this book will allow non-specialists to understand the present status of the field and the future of gravitational wave science.

Book excerpt: This volume of the CRM Conference Series is based on a carefully refereed selection of contributions presented at the "11th International Symposium on Quantum Theory and Symmetries", held in Montreal, Canada from July 1-5, 2019. The main objective of the meeting was to share and make accessible new research and recent results in several branches of Theoretical and Mathematical Physics, including Algebraic Methods, Condensed Matter Physics, Cosmology and Gravitation, Integrability, Non-perturbative Quantum Field Theory, Particle Physics, Quantum Computing and Quantum Information Theory, and String/ADS-CFT. There was also a special session in honour of Decio Levi. The volume is divided into sections corresponding to the sessions held during the symposium, allowing the reader to appreciate both the homogeneity and the diversity of mathematical tools that have been applied in these subject areas. Several of the plenary speakers, who are internationally recognized experts in their fields, have contributed reviews of the main topics to complement the original contributions. .
