Le champ d'application est la Communauté Urbaine de Lyon. Dans une première partie, une approche systémique de la gestion des déchets est menée. Le système déchets ainsi défini est analysé sui va nt trois angles le gisement qu'il aura à traiter, les éléments qui le composent puis les modalités de son fonctionnement. De façon plus opérationnelle, un outil de connaissance des flux transitant dans le système déchets du Grand Lyon a été élaboré. La seconde partie identifie les dysfonctionnements et nuisances manifestes dans les relations entre les dispositifs de la gestion des déchets et l'occupation des espaces collectifs. Cette étude fait apparaître l'importance de la prise en considération de ces dispositifs dans la conception même des espaces urbains, et notamment dans les documents d'urbanisme qui en définissent le cadre. Or des lacunes sont manifestes en matière de prise en compte du système déchets dans ces derniers. Sont alors exposées des propositions pour y intégrer les besoins des gestionnaires déchets. Différentes suggestions sont formulées selon l'étendue de la mobilisation des espaces par les objets de la gestion des déchets : des habitations aux trottoirs, places et voies de circulation, jusqu'aux surfaces plus importantes réservées à des unités de gestion des déchets

An example of the former may be an ancient irrigation system in the Filipines or in the Middle East that still functions today, while the latter may reflect the importance of maintaining groundwater levels for the preservation of organic remains on archaeological sites or of wooden piles underneath standing buildings. In either case the papers in this book reflect the dynamic nature of water, and hence the equally dynamic relation between water management and heritage.
