Book excerpt: Dynamics of Explosions (Volume 106) primarily concerns the interrelationship between the rate processes of energy deposition in a compressible medium and the concurrent nonsteady flow as it typically occurs in explosion phenomena. Dynamics of reactive Systems (Volume 105--AD-A173 108) spans a broader area, encompassing the processes coupling the dynamics of fluid flow and molecular transformations in reactive media, and occurring in any combustion system. Major topics in this volume include: Flame acceleration and transition to detonation; Initiation and transmission of detonations; Detonation structure and limit propagation; Detonation kinetics, structure, and boundary effects; Explosions, shock reflections, and blast waves; Heterogeneous detonations and explosions; and Condensed phase shocks and detonations.

Book Synopsis Environmental Implications of Combustion Processes by : Ishwar K. Puri
Download or read book Environmental Implications of Combustion Processes written by Ishwar K. Puri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-09-22 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there is a large body of research literature pertaining to the environmental implications of combustion processes, this book is the first to present a concise treatment of fundamental issues that can be quickly and easily used by entry-level researchers. The book is arranged so that it logically flows from fundamentals to pollutants, through theory, and on to modeling. Chapters cover combustion fundamentals, gaseous pollution, and heterogeneous combustion. Combustion theory in the form of Activation Energy Asymptotics is included for the lay reader, followed by a presentation of reduced mechanisms in the context of burning, a topic of environmental significance. Turbulent combustion modeling is also discussed.
Book Synopsis Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals by : Agnes Buka
Download or read book Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals written by Agnes Buka and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Book Synopsis From Microphysics to Macrophysics by : Roger Balian
Download or read book From Microphysics to Macrophysics written by Roger Balian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-26 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular, often cited text returns in a softcover edition to provide a thorough introduction to statistical physics and thermodynamics, and to exhibit the universal chain of ideas leading from the laws of microphysics to the macroscopic behaviour of matter. A wide range of applications illustrates the concepts, and many exercises reinforce understanding. Volume II applies statistical methods to systems governed by quantum effects, in particular to solid state physics, explaining properties due to the crystal structure or to the lattice excitations or to the electrons. The last chapters are devoted to non-equilibrium processes and to kinetic equations, with many applications included.
Book Synopsis Four Laws That Drive the Universe by : Peter Atkins
Download or read book Four Laws That Drive the Universe written by Peter Atkins and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-09-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laws of thermodynamics drive everything that happens in the universe. From the sudden expansion of a cloud of gas to the cooling of hot metal, and from the unfurling of a leaf to the course of life itself - everything is directed and constrained by four simple laws. They establish fundamental concepts such as temperature and heat, and reveal the arrow of time and even the nature of energy itself. Peter Atkins' powerful and compelling introduction explains what the laws are and how they work, using accessible language and virtually no mathematics. Guiding the reader from the Zeroth Law to the Third Law, he introduces the fascinating concept of entropy, and how it not only explains why your desk tends to get messier, but also how its unstoppable rise constitutes the engine of the universe.

Models will also be described for meteoroids which are also a prevailing risk.
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Optical Materials by : Jerome V. Moloney
Download or read book Nonlinear Optical Materials written by Jerome V. Moloney and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-08-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical methods play a significant role in the rapidly growing field of nonlinear optical materials. This volume discusses a number of successful or promising contributions. The overall theme of this volume is twofold: (1) the challenges faced in computing and optimizing nonlinear optical material properties; and (2) the exploitation of these properties in important areas of application. These include the design of optical amplifiers and lasers, as well as novel optical switches. Research topics in this volume include how to exploit the magnetooptic effect, how to work with the nonlinear optical response of materials, how to predict laser-induced breakdown in efficient optical devices, and how to handle electron cloud distortion in femtosecond processes.
