This book provides an in depth and contemporary coverage of knowledge and practices in the value chain of this popular fruit, from production through to consumption. The chapters explore all the most recent developments in areas such as breeding, novel processing technologies, postharvest physiology and storage, packaging, nutritional quality and safety aspects. An outstanding team of authors from across the globe have contributed to make this the definitive pineapple handbook. Handbook of Pineapple Technology: Production, Postharvest Science, Processing and Nutrition is the ultimate guide for scientists in the food industries specializing in fruit processing, packaging and manufacturing. It is also a useful resource for educators and students of food technology and food sciences as well as research centers and regulatory agencies around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the First International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology in Sidney, B. C. , the suggestion was made to hold the second in Pallanza, on Lake Maggiore, at the C. N. R. -Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia. At the same time it was decided that there should be a symposium every third year. The organization of the symposium was made considerably easier by the Senior Editor's having been in personal contact with several Russian colleagues (courtesy of a kind invitation from the U. S. S. R. Academy of Sciences), the 'Hamburg Group' and the Junior Editor. Correspondence with various students of Oligochaeta also furnished many useful suggestions. The Second International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology was therefore held in Pallanza in late September 1982 and was attended by 53 scientists from 16 countries in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. No review papers were formally invited as this had already been done at the first symposium: all the papers were accordingly allotted the same time for oral presentation. These proceedings contain all papers Hrabe and Slepukhina, which were given in absentia, as it presented at the symposium, including those by was impossible for the authors to join the group. The main topics were taxonomy and evolution of Oligo chaeta, life-cyle and population studies, the role of Oligo chaeta in assessing water pollution, physiolog ical studies, community and distribution studies. Special taxonomic workshops took place in the evenings.

Book excerpt: Trace Elements in Human Health and Disease is a collection of papers presented at an international symposium on trace elements held in Detroit, Michigan on July 10-12, 1974. The symposium provided a forum for discussing the role of essential and toxic elements in human health and disease. These two volumes bring together a vast amount of information on trace elements zinc and copper, magnesium, selenium, fluoride, cadmium, lead, and mercury. They will be of great value to physicians, nutritionists, and toxicologists. A particularly interesting section relates to the leaching of important trace metals by excess dietary fiber in some developing countries. These books are one of the important monograph series published by the American Nutrition Foundation.

Book excerpt: How To Be a Bitch: How Women Who Have It All Actually Have It All Have you been in a situation where you say things like, "I can't bring this painting out this way, it is not good enough," "I would have loved to take the job but I think I am not ready for it," or, "Why should I show an interest when other people can do it far better than me?" If you have, it shows that your confidence is low and it is holding you back, limiting your choices, and finally giving your power to perfectionism-something that we shouldn't do. This book has the tricks that will empower you as a woman. You will learn how to outgrow your career. It is time to know how to balance everything in your life. There are also aspects of how to develop good habits, persevering and ensuring you attain more productivity. No one is born blank. Nature has created several placeholders in us - there is the part of us that yearns for the 'Hows.' How do I look attractive? How do I avoid being rude? How do I compare? How do I win over that guy? And, of course, how do I succeed? To each one of these and several others, we have answers. These answers are not carefully thought-out ones - we just happen to know the answers, thanks to society. Society performs one function - it fills in the various blank spaces in our consciousness with different types of ideas, thoughtful and dogmatic. You really cannot blame yourself for having these ideas - not many of us are born geniuses. The ability to sit down and contemplate our affairs very profoundly and critically is something we learn with considerable effort. But because we lack the determination to carry out this exercise, we simply follow the current of society. Do you think I am wrong? Well, let's see, shall we? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color Atlas of Equine Pathology offers a practical guide to identifying equine diseases, presenting a single resource with more than 1000 images showing predominantly gross pathology. Organized by body systems, the book allows for picture matching during or after an equine necropsy. In this user-friendly atlas, each chapter takes a common format, presenting the disease process as well as congenital, degenerative, inflammatory, and neoplastic sequences, with text boxes offering quick reference to key information. The book begins with an introductory chapter summarizing the principles of the equine field necropsy, and subsequent organ-based chapters depict gross features of disease, focusing on macroscopic digital images supplemented by histology and immunohistochemistry when necessary. Some clinical information for correlation with pathology is included. Color Atlas of Equine Pathology is an essential resource for diagnostic veterinary pathologists and pathology residents, as well as for equine practitioners performing necropsies in the field.

Book excerpt: This Special Issue of Polymers is a collection of 11 original high-quality scientific contributions on basic and applied research in the field of wood science and technology, and provides good examples of the recent challenges related to the production and application of wood and wood-based materials. The Special Issue includes individual papers concerned with the enhancement of the performance and technological properties of wood composites, above all plywood, as well as with the ignition and combustion of wood and wood composites in monitoring and evaluating these processes on state-of-the-art equipment, and monitoring chemical changes in wood and wood adhesives and composites. The topic of the Special Issue has clearly resonated with the world's scientific community and the responses have come from traditionally strong wood research centers in Europe and Asia.
