Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aeeuraey in preoperative diagnosis has always been the basis of sueeess in urology. In the past deeade, major advanees have been made in diagnostie imaging of the kidney and genitourinary traet. Of the new reliable teehniques available, eeho graphy, radioisotope studies and eomputerized tomographie seanning are of the greatest importanee in the investigation of renal and urinary traet diseases. These new methods of investigation have led to a radical change in the attitude and prae tieal approach when evaluating a patient presenting with a urologie disorder. The teeh niques each yield information of a different type and in eonjunetion with classie ra diology must be used safely and with a logical sequenee in the investigation of a diag nostie problem. They have greatly inereased the available evidenee on whieh diag nosis is based and their use should diminish the number of false diagnoses and ul timately improve treatment. The applieations ofthese reeently developed diagnostie methods in urology are reviewed in this book, based on the main eontributions given by a wide range of experts in their field during the last Congress of the European Assoeiation ofUrology, held in Athens in 1980. Intravenous urography, the first and major step in urologie diagnosis, developed more than half a eentury ago, ean still be improved, as shown by the routine use of early nephrotomography with rapid injeetion.

Book Synopsis The Mediterranean Sea by : Gianluca Eusebi Borzelli
Download or read book The Mediterranean Sea written by Gianluca Eusebi Borzelli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface, intermediate, and deep-water processes and their interaction in time and space drive the major ocean circulation of the Mediterranean Sea. All major forcing mechanisms, such as surface wind forcing, buoyancy fluxes, lateral mass exchange, and deep convection determining the global oceanic circulation are present in this body of water. Deep and intermediate water masses are formed in different areas of the ocean layers and they drive the Mediterranean thermohaline cell, which further shows important analogies with the global ocean conveyor belt. The Mediterranean Sea: Temporal Variability and Spatial Patterns is a comprehensive volume that investigates the temporal and spatial variability patterns in the ocean basin. Volume highlights include: Discussions of state-of-the-art physical and biogeochemical properties of the Mediterranean Sea Multiple physical ocean circulation processes, both in time and spatial scales (basin, sub-basin, and mesoscale) How different regional phenomena in the sea influence the biogeochemistry of the basin and the ocean dynamics Spatio-temporal variability of the surface circulation in the western Mediterranean Deep-water variability and inter-basin interactions in the eastern Mediterranean Sea Understanding the link between global ocean circulation patterns and the global climate The Mediterranean Sea will be a valuable resource for geoscientists, oceanographers, and meteorologists.

Book Synopsis International Humanitarian Law and Terrorism by : Andrea Bianchi
Download or read book International Humanitarian Law and Terrorism written by Andrea Bianchi and published by Hart Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book carefully and thoroughly analyses the legal questions raised by the phenomenon of terrorism, and past and recent efforts to fight it, from the perspective of international humanitarian law (IHL). The objective is to substantially contribute to a better understanding of the issues surrounding the content and applicability of IHL as it applies to terrorism as well as to analyse and contextualise the current debates on these controversial and critically important questions. While due heed is paid to doctrinal debates, particular emphasis is placed on the practice of social actors, particularly, although not exclusively, States. The analysis of their actual conduct as well as their expectations about the interpretation and application of the law is crucial to establishing an interpretive consensus on when and how IHL is relevant to regulate acts of terrorism. The approach of the book is analytical and discursive, rather than prescriptive. Thus the reader will find the relevant rules of IHL and other legal regimes as regards terrorism, but also the debates over their application, the contradictions in State practice and the impact these may have upon IHL's evolution and implementation. The aim is to provide legal practitioners, as well as those in military, political and academic circles, with a useful reference point. Hopefully the book will also prove useful to other readers who will find its content and easy-to-read style an encouragement to getting acquainted with a topical subject, traditionally thought to be reserved for legal specialists. This book was cited with approval by the US Court of Appeals in Salim Ahmed Hamdan v United States of America, 16th October 2012

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Book Synopsis High Energy Astrophysics by : Thierry J.-L. Courvoisier
Download or read book High Energy Astrophysics written by Thierry J.-L. Courvoisier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-energy astrophysics has unveiled a Universe very different from that only known from optical observations. It has revealed many types of objects in which typical variability timescales are as short as years, months, days, and hours (in quasars, X-ray binaries, etc), and even down to milli-seconds in gamma ray bursts. The sources of energy that are encountered are only very seldom nuclear fusion, and most of the time gravitation, a paradox when one thinks that gravitation is, by many orders of magnitude, the weakest of the fundamental interactions. The understanding of these objects' physical conditions and the processes revealed by high-energy astrophysics in the last decades is nowadays part of astrophysicists' culture, even of those active in other domains of astronomy. This book evolved from lectures given to master and PhD students at the University of Geneva since the early 1990s. It aims at providing astronomers and physicists intending to be active in high-energy astrophysics a broad basis on which they should be able to build the more specific knowledge they will need. While in the first part of the book the physical processes are described and derived in detail, the second part studies astrophysical objects in which high-energy astrophysics processes are crucial. This two-pronged approach will help students recognise physical processes by their observational signatures in contexts that may differ widely from those presented here.
