Book excerpt: This book presents the main research veins developed within the framework of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD), a paradigm that originated in French didactics of mathematics. While a great number of publications on ATD are available in French and Spanish, Working with the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic in Mathematics Education is the first directed at English-speaking international audiences. Written and edited by leading researchers in ATD, the book covers all aspects of ATD theory and practice, including teaching applications. The chapters feature the most relevant and recent investigations presented at the 6th international conference on the ATD, offering a unique opportunity for an international audience interested in the study of mathematics teaching and learning to keep in touch with advances in educational research. The book is divided into four sections and the contributions explore key topics such as: The core concept of ‘praxeology’, including its development and functionalities The need for new teaching praxeologies in the paradigm of questioning the world The impact of ATD on the teaching profession and the education of teachers This is the second volume in the New Perspectives on Research in Mathematics Education. This comprehensive casebook is an indispensable resource for researchers, teachers and graduate students around the world.

Book excerpt: This is the first English-language publication of the complete works of the great Spanish neurohistologist, Santiago Ramon y Cajal, on the cerebral cortex. The new translations include all Cajal's very early contributions on the cortex of small mammals, relevant chapters from his definitive textbook, and all his great works on the human cerebral cortex made at the peak of his career. The book also presents Cajal's surveys of cortical structure dating from his later years. It is extensively annotated, and the editors have verified and completed all Cajal's references. Special introductory chapters review the state of knowledge during each period covered, and the work concludes with an extensive essay on modern cortical neurohistology in which the quality and lasting significance of Cajal's contributions are highlighted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive and original monograph, Professor Rene Louis presents in minute detail in one volume the gross anatomy, nerve supply, biomechanics, and microcirculation of the spine. He also presents the surgical approaches to the vertebral bodies and their contents. Professor Louis is a great anatomist and this book has been prepared from his personal observations, both anatomical and surgical. His studies have been meticulously conducted and contain much original research, for instance his work on the motion of the neural elements within the lumbar vertebral canal. The illustrations are neady all original and very often a photograph of the neural or vascular elements is presented alongside a drawing of a given important anatomical area. For all these reasons, this inspiring treatise makes a valuable contri bution to our knowledge of the spine and forms a basis for an under standing of the intricacies of surgical anatomy and approaches. It will be especially valuable to the spinal surgeon, but the medical student, the orthopedic resident (or registrar), and the anatomist will also find it extremely useful. Leon L. Wiltse, M.D.

Book excerpt: The first of two complementary volumes on developmental psychopathology, a new perspective on mental illness that ties mental disorder to normal development. Developmental psychopathology is sufficiently different from older views of mental dysfunction as to be growing as a separate subdiscipline of psychology/psychiatry. This volume covers the history, theory and methods of this new approach, including the contributions of several standard theoretical viewpoints (psychoanalytic, system, theory, organizational, information processing, cross-cultural, etc.); examines the relationship between developmental psychopathology and genetics, neuropsychology, epidemiology, and ethology; and looks at the implications for psychometric theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review and critically examine the standard approach to equity valuation using a constant risk-adjusted cost of capital, and we develop a new valuation approach discounting risk-adjusted fundamentals, such as expected free cash flows and residual operating income, using nominal zero-coupon interest rates. We show that standard estimates of the cost of capital, based on historical stock returns, are likely to be a significantly biased measure of the firm's cost of capital, but also that the bias is almost impossible to quantify empirically. The new approach recognizes that, in practice, interest rates, expected equity returns, and inflation rates are all stochastic. We explicitly characterize the risk-adjustments to the fundamentals in an equilibrium setting. We show how the term structure of risk-adjustments depends on both the time-series properties of the free cash flows and the accounting policy. Growth, persistence, and mean reversion of residual operating income created by competition in the product markets or by the accounting policy are key determinants of the term structure of risk-adjustments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational science can loosely be defined as the endeavor to develop and analyse models for the simulation and control of complex processes. This is achieved by making optimal use of computer resources and by drawing upon a variety of disciplines, techniques and theories. With the emergence of advanced computational and information technologies, computational science now has a significant impact on engineering, physical, biological, management and social sciences. The contributions in this state-of-the-art volume range from theoretical and numerical topics to practical implementations. The subject matter includes modelling, mathematical and numerical analysis, differential equations, linear algebra, optimization, domain decomposition, computational fluid dynamics, computational mechanics, elasticity, structure, computational physics and chemistry, electromagnetic, control theory and other applications. This volume is dedicated to Roland Glowinski on the occasion of his 60th birthday. It is aimed at the next generation of scientists, applied mathematicians, computer scientists, practitioners and engineers who will define computational science within the context of the challenging scientific, industrial, economic and societal problems of the 21st century.
