Book Synopsis Applied Polymer Light Microscopy by : Derek A. Hemsley
Download or read book Applied Polymer Light Microscopy written by Derek A. Hemsley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthetic polymers make excellent specimens for light microscopy. Despite this, the use of the technique, at least in its advanced forms, is not so widespread as might be expected. Although reliable and relevant data are difficult to find and quantify, it seems that in other fields of materials science and technology there is a greater readiness to tum to the microscope in research, in industrial problem solving, or for quality assessment and control. It also seems that the reasons for the present situation are partly historical, partly the result of the structure of the plastics and rubber industries, and partly the education and training background of senior staff who tend to be chemistry or engineering based. In neither field does light microscopy feature strongly in the basic training. The primary aim of this book is to provide some insight into the range oflight microscopy techniques applicable to polymeric specimens, and to highlight typical applications to commercial polymers and polymer products. Where appropriate, the optical techniques involved are discussed in some detail. However, it has not been the intention to produce a light microscopy textbook dealing with the principles and design of the basic instrument. Many such texts are available, and selected examples are cited in the reference list at the end of most chapters.
Book Synopsis Understanding Light Microscopy by : Jeremy Sanderson
Download or read book Understanding Light Microscopy written by Jeremy Sanderson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-05-06 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduces readers to the enlightening world of the modern light microscope There have been rapid advances in science and technology over the last decade, and the light microscope, together with the information that it gives about the image, has changed too. Yet the fundamental principles of setting up and using a microscope rests upon unchanging physical principles that have been understood for years. This informative, practical, full-colour guide fills the gap between specialised edited texts on detailed research topics, and introductory books, which concentrate on an optical approach to the light microscope. It also provides comprehensive coverage of confocal microscopy, which has revolutionised light microscopy over the last few decades. Written to help the reader understand, set up, and use the often very expensive and complex modern research light microscope properly, Understanding Light Microscopy keeps mathematical formulae to a minimum—containing and explaining them within boxes in the text. Chapters provide in-depth coverage of basic microscope optics and design; ergonomics; illumination; diffraction and image formation; reflected-light, polarised-light, and fluorescence microscopy; deconvolution; TIRF microscopy; FRAP & FRET; super-resolution techniques; biological and materials specimen preparation; and more. Gives a didactic introduction to the light microscope Encourages readers to use advanced fluorescence and confocal microscopes within a research institute or core microscopy facility Features full-colour illustrations and workable practical protocols Understanding Light Microscopy is intended for any scientist who wishes to understand and use a modern light microscope. It is also ideal as supporting material for a formal taught course, or for individual students to learn the key aspects of light microscopy through their own study.

Book Synopsis Urine Sediment by : Josefine Neuendorf
Download or read book Urine Sediment written by Josefine Neuendorf and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-17 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive resource and up-to-date description of all urinary sediment constituents which are presented in bright-field mode and in phase-contrast mode. Thanks to numerous detailed images of urinary sediment constituents, the reader is able to easily compare what they view microscopically with high-resolution photographs and short films. The book is also designed to aid the identification of rare urine constituents in their native state without prior staining. It also features guidance on how set-up a microscope , microscopy techniques, and preanalytics. Exercises focused on microscopic analysis and diagnosis and a urinary sediment quiz reinforce key concepts to aid learning. Urine Sediment provides a practically applicable guide to the recognition of urinary sediment constituents. It is therefore a critical resource for trainees and experienced practitioners in urology, nephrology, gynecology and general practice who need to be able to accurately and quickly identify urine sediment constituents.
Book Synopsis Techniques in Light Microscopy by : Steven Ruzin
Download or read book Techniques in Light Microscopy written by Steven Ruzin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides an accessible and pedagogical explanation of the way microscopes magnify images and covers all techniques to date in transmitted and fluorescent light microscopy. The first section covers basic optics as it relates to microscopy. The second section describes all the major optical techniques of transmitted light microscopy, starting with brightfield, through darkfield, polarized light, phase contrast, differential interference contrast, and Hoffman modulation contrast microscopy. The final third of the book covers all the techniques of fluorescence microscopy. It begins with a simple explanation of fluorescence and is followed by Widefield epifluorescence, confocal, and 2-photon microscopy. This is followed by computational imaging including restoration ('deconvolution') microscopy, and all the present super-resolution techniques. The book concludes by discussing attainable resolution using transmitted light microscopy, including a thorough discussion of the Rayleigh, Sparrow, and other criteria of resolution, ending with a short discussion of the common pitfalls that result in decreased microscope resolution. The final chapter in the book is a short history of the microscope, beginning with the ancients, then discussing three seminal natural philosophers: Leeuwenhoek, Swammerdam, and Hooke. The remaining sections of the history chapter cover mechanical and optical advancements in the history of transmitted light microscopy. Finally, it includes a short history of fluorescence microscopy starting with Köhler and Rohr's first use of fluorescence microscopy in 1905, and ending with a description of the Sarastro Phoibos 1000, the first commercial confocal microscope.
