Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are problems with recently-developed injectable or implant contraceptives which provide too much drug at 1 time and which are limited to use of only a few compounds of specific chemistry. Delivery systems which have to be removed also provide a problem. Research is underway to develop a biodegradable delivery system based on polymers. These systems could deliver the drug either by a mechanism of drug diffusion through the polymer, delivery as the polymer matrix biodegrades, or a combination of the 2 methods. These systems could make use of any number of synthetic or natural drugs. Current research on suitable polymer materials and release mechanisms is reviewed. The systems do seem to have the potential of expanding the range of available parenteral depot contraceptives. Absolute clinical data are not yet available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an up-to-date and comprehensive review of female contraception, offering an extensive overview of contraception types, including oral, injectable, emergency, and various cervical barrier contraceptives. It also discusses behavioral and sterilization methods of contraception as well as the clinical effectiveness, advantages, disadvantages, side effects, and mechanisms of action of each method. Now in its fully revised and expanded third edition, this text includes seven new chapters that address specific clinical issues that healthcare providers face daily. These issues include patients with medical problems, perimenopausal women, the adolescent population, post-pregnancy patients, patients with bleeding problems, fibroids or hyperplasia, obese patients and patients with acne or hirutism. There is also a new chapter dedicated to contraceptive methods that are currently in development. Each chapter reviews the correct use of the individual method, the most appropriate candidates, timing of initiation, red flag contraindications, risks and benefits, method of action, handling side effects, non-contraceptive benefits, switching methods and the CDC Medical Eligibility for the method. Importantly however, there is a new emphasis placed on standardized evidence-based practice recommendations incorporating the most recent US Selected Practice Recommendations and rationale as published by the US CDC. Written by experts in the field, The Handbook of Contraception, Third Edition, is a valuable resource for obstetricians, gynecologists, reproductive medicine specialists and primary care physicians.

Book excerpt: The "contraceptive revolution" of the 1960s and 1970s introduced totally new contraceptive options and launched an era of research and product development. Yet by the late 1980s, conditions had changed and improvements in contraceptive products, while very important in relation to improved oral contraceptives, IUDs, implants, and injectables, had become primarily incremental. Is it time for a second contraceptive revolution and how might it happen? Contraceptive Research and Development explores the frontiers of science where the contraceptives of the future are likely to be found and lays out criteria for deciding where to make the next R&D investments. The book comprehensively examines today's contraceptive needs, identifies "niches" in those needs that seem most readily translatable into market terms, and scrutinizes issues that shape the market: method side effects and contraceptive failure, the challenge of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, and the implications of the "women's agenda." Contraceptive Research and Development analyzes the response of the pharmaceutical industry to current dynamics in regulation, liability, public opinion, and the economics of the health sector and offers an integrated set of recommendations for public- and private-sector action to meet a whole new generation of demand.

Book excerpt: Guides readers on the proper use of in vitro drug release methodologies in order to evaluate the performance of special dosage forms In the last decade, the application of drug release testing has widened to a variety of novel/special dosage forms. In order to predict the in vivo behavior of such dosage forms, the design and development of the in vitro test methods need to take into account various aspects, including the dosage form design and the conditions at the site of application and the site of drug release. This unique book is the first to cover the field of in vitro release testing of special dosage forms in one volume. Featuring contributions from an international team of experts, it presents the state of the art of the use of in vitro drug release methodologies for assessing special dosage forms’ performances and describes the different techniques required for each one. In Vitro Drug Release Testing of Special Dosage Forms covers the in vitro release testing of: lipid based oral formulations; chewable oral drug products; injectables; drug eluting stents; inhalation products; transdermal formulations; topical formulations; vaginal and rectal delivery systems and ophthalmics. The book concludes with a look at regulatory aspects. Book excerpt: This document is one of two evidence-based cornerstones of the World Health Organization's (WHO) new initiative to develop and implement evidence-based guidelines for family planning. The first cornerstone, the Medical eligibility criteria for contraceptive use (third edition) published in 2004, provides guidance for who can use contraceptive methods safely. This document, the Selected practice recommendations for contraceptive use (second edition), provides guidance for how to use contraceptive methods safely and effectively once they are deemed to be medically appropriate. The recommendations contained in this document are the product of a process that culminated in an expert Working Group meeting held at the World Health Organization, Geneva, 13-16 April 2004.
