Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book acquaints readers with a range of techniques to help them effectively identify, record, map, analyze and report on patterns in various dimensions of human development (HD) with spatial scales down to the village level. It is impossible to capture HD at the local and global scale with only a single index, because differences in HD at the international scale are caused by ‘general’ factors, whereas local-scale differences are influenced by ‘specific’ factors. This book offers a variety of methods for scientifically mapping HD at any spatial scale. It covers how to rationally select variables; how to test the models; how to validate the results, and how to analyze them. For this purpose, it employs a case study on an Indian district. The socio-economic factors regulating the patterns of HD are now more complex than they were only a few decades ago, making it essential to incorporate newer models in order to successfully ‘replicate’ the real-world situation. Accordingly, the book offers essential methodological tools & techniques for mapping HD. It sheds new light on a handful of statistical multivariate analysis and machine learning algorithms that are rarely used in the social sciences when dealing with HD, yet have sound mathematical and statistical bases. These techniques can be successfully used for predictive analysis in the earth & natural sciences, decision sciences and management disciplines, and are equally effective in terms of capturing, predicting and projecting the composite HD ‘landscape.’ This book will especially benefit two groups of readers: firstly, HD practitioners who want to find out ‘why some areas are doing better than others’ by exploring the complex interactions of spatially linked variables with different HD parameters. And secondly, practitioners in other branches of the social sciences who are not concerned with HD but are looking for ‘hands-on training’ with techniques they can apply in their respective field of spatial investigations.

Book excerpt: The tribals are industrious, hardy, peaceful and simple-minded people and have to be admired for the uniqueness of their culture. The socio-economic, educational and political development after independence have provided a new impetus to the forces of dynamism in the tribal India. Contact with urban people, spread of education, rising aspirations of the tribal youth, growth of social and political leaders all have combined to give rise to, what we may call, tribal elites. The study deals with various problems concerning the development of personality. It is found that some students are good in their studies, while others inspite of their hard labour do not do well in their studies and are frustrated. This has led psychologists as well as researchers to investigate into the different dimensions of personality.

It highlights challenges to the continuity of the plural fabric of India’s society and culture. Acknowledging that socio-political concerns on women’s issues do not always find adequate representation in social science texts, the book explores issues and policies related to gender. It locates the roots of feminist fundamentalism, studies the reactions to it, and brings forth the demands relating to new agendas and strategies for feminism. The authors also present empirical studies on issues faced by minority communities in India. An important contribution, this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of sociology, political sociology, gender studies, exclusion studies, South Asian studies, Affirmative action, and political science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 70 years after independence, the tragic reality of Indian schools is that who we are, where we live, how much we earn and our gender influences the kind of education we will get. In this collection of essays the author explores the contours of a school system that is facing a crisis of legitimacy. While India aspires to march towards a knowledge driven society and economy, millions of young people are left behind. Those who can afford march out of government schools only to realize that the private schools are no better. The schools they attend leaves them with little knowledge or skill, a very low self-esteem and a bleak future. This book argues that the struggle for equality in education, is ultimately a struggle for quality – both being two sides of the same coin. Book excerpt: The Present Book, First Of Its Kind, Differs Distinctly And Prominently From The Books Written In The Past On Tribes, Tribal Women, Or Working Women Of Our Country, Because It Deals With A Hitherto Unexplored Profile Of Tribal Women And Compares The Features With Those Of Non-Tribal Women. Absence Of Detailed Studies On The Lives Of Tribal Working Women Is Not Surprising Because The Phenomenon Itself Of Tribal Women Entering Into White-Collar Jobs In Significant Numbers, Especially In Cities Located In Tribal Belts Of Our Country, Is Of Recent Origin. But Coming As They Are From Distinctly Different Socio-Cultural Background, Having Traversed Different Psyche And Approach Towards Their New Role And Life, Tribal Working Women Differ Significantly From Their Non-Tribal Twins. One Of The Reasons For These Differences Lies In The Patriarchy And Normative System, Which Are Not So Much Rigid In The Tribal Society As They Are In The Non-Tribal Society. Therefore, A Comparative Study Of Tribal And Non-Tribal Working Women Presents To Us An Opportunity To Observe The Contours Of Cultural Characteristics Of The Two Societies As Reflected In The Attitudinal And Motivational Responses Of Their Women. The Author Has Analyzed The Facts And Figures Obtained On Different Aspects Of Lives Of Tribal And Non-Tribal Working Women Of Ranchi (The State Capital Of Jharkhand) In The Perspective Of Socio-Cultural Configurations Of The Two Societies And Presented The Findings In A Format Meant For General Readership. The Book Is Expected To Be Of Interest To Researchers Associated With Tribal Studies, Women Studies, Comparative Study Of Tribal And Non-Tribal Societies, And Working Women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume brings together readings describing a range of less-traversed aspects and transferences of women’s rights and struggles in India and develops a comprehensive understanding of the interface between women’s activism and politics. The book documents and discusses diverse ways in which Indian women have struggled for empowerment, political voice and representation, and rallied against injustice and discrimination. Against the backdrop of women’s assertion of rights and negotiations for empowerment, the chapters in this volume explore diverse facets of collective agency, and emanations of women’s politico-legal struggles against stereotypes of gender and class in post-independence India. While the donor-driven international community has been eager to celebrate the successes of its global normative agenda-setting and ‘best practices’ approach, this book - based primarily on field research by the contributors - showcases authentic local ownership and women’s own agency, taking seriously the need to understand the cultural context and pay attention to intersectionality. It presents various examples of women’s activism for change, reflecting on the quotidian struggles and dynamic assertions of voice and political power, within and outside of formal political institutions. The book is a contribution to the debate about agency and ownership as key aspects of empowerment, highlighting women who defy dominant narratives. It will be an essential read for students and academics of political science, gender studies, sociology and social sciences, and cultural studies. It will also be of interest to readers interested in the history of women’s movements and their participation in national and local politics in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist Subversion and Complicity interrogates a specific form of feminist practice, that which has involved engaging with state and international institutions to insert gender knowledge in their development interventions. Bringing together contributions from eight feminists located in very different kinds of institutions and spaces from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India, this book is the outcome of a deeply reflexive process to produce a critique from within of this present day feminist practice. An array of experiences and encounters are scrutinised - from bringing feminist perspectives to governmental projects on education, health, and legal reform to transformations in the discourses and practices of women's movements and feminisms as they encountered developmentalisms. The writers show that feminist politics is not merely assimilated in governmental projects but that it interrupts these projects even as it is assimilated; a feminist politics in which complicity is often a subversive activity, is destabilizing and contesting of meaning.
