There are, of course, many other associations of gestalt therapists, but many of them are either much smaller or qualitatively different because they attend to certifying and regulating their members. The Association for the Advancement of Gestalt Therapy (AAGT) does not certify nor regulate; its sole purpose is to advance the theory and practice of gestalt therapy through the associating of its members. This book both highlights the nature of contemporary gestalt therapy and makes known the existence and nature of the AAGT through the lens of its tenth biennial conference, which was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. In 2010 the AAGT returned to the Unites States for a venue in its biennial conference after having been in Amsterdam in the Netherlands; Vancouver, Canada; and Manchester, England. It’s regional growth had been sustained, and its international scope had become expansive. The 2010 conference, with its theme of continuity and change, was a look at contemporary gestalt therapy, and it also featured a significant and growing dialogue with recognized leaders in other clinical perspectives. The 2010 conference featured many long-time, recognized colleagues from the field of gestalt therapy, including many aging colleagues who trained personally with the founders of gestalt therapy. Despite this, it has not been framed into a single, homogeneous, and thus universal form. The abundance of approaches and nuances found in legal and political doctrine makes it an extremely labile and meandering concept, which can take on a variety of shapes. Its legislative articulation is by no means uniform, and thus reproducible, either. The separation of powers in constitutional law is therefore expressed in a broad array of formulas, sometimes explicitly, sometimes implicitly. In addition, it can take on a classic, almost model form, or it can be shaped in a significantly altered manner compared to what we used to call its model […] …the dispersion of ideas about what the separation of powers is, where it originates or how to best frame and apply it in legislation and practice does not deprive the separation of powers of the nature of a timeless general notion that underlies the very concept of the division of power. After all, the impulse to formulate the assumptions for the separation of powers was in each case triggered by the desire to eliminate the vesting of unlimited or excessive power in an individual or a narrow, oligarchised group. The book rejects, however, the currently widespread expectation that 'internationalization' makes all democracies converge on similar political and economic institutions and power relations. Examining two peace movements in Indonesia – the largest democratic country in Southeast Asia – to illuminate discontinuity, continuity, and change in social movements, the author uses a cultural approach to understanding why social movements persist. He argues that the activists’ memory, relationship with others, collective identity, and emotion are reasons for social movements to ascend and peak. This is a direct response to the argument that the availability of resources and political opportunities is the main ingredient for any social movements to rise. While having different fates, the two movements studied arose in the midst of violence between Christian and Muslim communities in Ambon, Indonesia: The Kopi Badati movement and Filterinfo. The book extends the applicability of the cultural approach in explaining why social movements discontinue, continue, and change over time, without discounting the importance of available resources and political opportunities.
