Download or read book Continuing Bonds written by Dennis Klass and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996. This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.
Book Synopsis The Continuing City by : James E. Vance
Download or read book The Continuing City written by James E. Vance and published by . This book was released on 1990-05 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We shape our houses but then they shape us." Winston Churchill said it, but James Vance explains it in the updated edition of his classic study of urban geography. The Continuing City focuses on the morphology of the city -- its physical form and structure -- and its power to influence the culture, society, and the day-to-day lives of inhabitants. Without endorsing rigid environmentalism, Vance's text offers a counterpoint to behavioral explanations of history by examining the city as a social phenomenon and cultural force. Although the physical remains of the past are often seen only as works of art, they are also revealing documents. The city is a living alternative to the historical record, one that is unedited by artists and chroniclers. Vance explains the significance of the "morphogenesis" of the city in Western civilization from its ceremonial and administrative function in the ancient world, through its decline with the rise of feudalism, to its reemergence as a commercial center in the late Middle Ages, and its continuing evolution in the modern era. He also explores the city's impact on social structure, demography, technology, mercantile economics, political power, religious and intellectual institutions, styles of art and architecture, and other topics.

This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lifelong learning has become essential not only for professionals, but also for those they serve. The volume explores, analyzes, questions, and critiques CPE trends and issues across a variety of contexts, and it highlights new thinking and developments to assist providers and practitioners to re-envision their roles and set new directions in the field of CPE. This collection is inspired by the early seminal works of Cyril Houle who advocated that educational researchers and providers of CPE should listen to the experience of professionals as a basis for supporting their professional learning. Noted for its depth of coverage, it explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.

Book Synopsis A Strategic Guide to Continuing Professional Development for Health and Care Professionals: The TRAMm Model by : Sarah Lawson
Download or read book A Strategic Guide to Continuing Professional Development for Health and Care Professionals: The TRAMm Model written by Sarah Lawson and published by M&K Update Ltd. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoroughly revised edition of the popular Strategic Guide to Continuing Professional Development for Health and Care Professionals includes the latest professional policy guidance updates as well as the results of the authors’ ongoing research into professional development within health and social care. The importance of applying new learning in practice is reflected by the updated TRAMm model, in which ‘A’ now stands for ‘Apply’ (rather than ‘Activity’, as in the first edition). There is a new chapter on changing mindsets about CPD and how to create opportunities for learning and development, despite limited resources in the current economic climate. The authors have also expanded the chapter on CPD engagement, with updated evidence on exploring your preferred styles of learning. Continuing professional development (CPD) is essential for all health and social care professionals. It is also beneficial for organisations. Evidence shows that when there is significant investment in CPD, individuals feel valued and their practice improves. In order to maximise the potential of your CPD, this practical handbook guides you through the updated five TRAMm stages or ‘stations’: Tell (T), Record (R), Apply (A), Monitor (M) and measure (m). The tried-and-tested TRAMm Model reflects the five standards for CPD laid down by the Health and Care Professions Council; and your own learning needs provide the main focus, enabling you to develop a full CPD portfolio as you progress. At the end of each chapter, there are opportunities to reflect on your learning – and apply theory to practice through a series of tasks. Designed for all levels (from health and social care students to experienced practitioners), this book may also be useful for associated support workers and other healthcare professionals, including doctors, pharmacists, optometrists, nurses and midwives. In addition, some aspects will be relevant for professionals outside healthcare, such as teachers, surveyors and engineers.
Book Synopsis Continuing Higher Education and Lifelong Learning by : Michaela Knust
Download or read book Continuing Higher Education and Lifelong Learning written by Michaela Knust and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-02 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anke Hanft and Michaela Knust The present study examines and compares the structure and organisation of c- tinuing higher education in six countries: Austria, Finland, France, Germany, the UK and the USA. The focus is not just on current continuing education provisions at higher education institutions but also on the institutions themselves and their surrounding milieu. The study also attempts to move away from a purely national angle and to approach the topic from an international perspective. The conclusion is reached that when it comes to the development, establishment and professional implementation of continuing education provisions, German higher education ins- tutions lag behind the other countries in the comparison in almost all areas. The main ndings in terms of the three levels ‘system’, ‘institution’, and ‘programme’ are summarised below. 1 Continuing Education in the Higher Education System There are considerable divergences, both nationally and internationally, in the d- inition of the German term “wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung” (“academic c- tinuing education”). In the English-speaking world, a variety of terms such as “lifelong learning”, “adult education”, “continuing education”, “continuing higher education”, “university-level continuing education” or “continuing professional development” are often used as synonyms without any precise differentiation – and this is not perceived as a problem.
Book Synopsis Encouraging a Continuing Personal Investment in Learning by : Martin L. Maehr
Download or read book Encouraging a Continuing Personal Investment in Learning written by Martin L. Maehr and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writing of this book was in part supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSFEHR 0335369). It represents a significant extension and enriched interpretation of earlier work on “motivation as an instructional outcome” (e.g., Maehr, 1976). Such enrichment and enhancement was prompted by the work on the project as it was conceptualized and envisioned by Paul Pintrich---and later, following his untimely death, carried out by a cadre of students and colleagues, including especially his Wife, Life Partner and also oft-time collaborator in multiple research and scholarly endeavors: Dr. Elizabeth DeGroot as well as several colleagues, including, the author of this volume and Dr. Stuart Karabenick. Of course, it is the primary author of this volume who must bear the responsibility for omissions, errors and interpretations that may have slipped into the text. But whatever portions of this volume may be deemed worthy of consideration and possibly of some value for fellow scholars presently or in the future --- and also contribute in at least some small way not only to continuing scholarly study of “The Most important attitude that can be formed: “That of Desire to go on Learning.” But therewith here and there also prove useful not only for scholars and the development of an increased understanding of the nature and nurture of motivation and its impact on the pursuit of knowledge but also prove useful to students in preparing to become educators --- and perhaps also of value to experienced educational practitioners ---- and here there maybe also to parents and others with a concern for the nature and nurture of excellence in teaching and learning.

Book Synopsis Assessment of the Continuing Operability of Chemical Agent Disposal Facilities and Equipment by : National Research Council
Download or read book Assessment of the Continuing Operability of Chemical Agent Disposal Facilities and Equipment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-03-08 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army's Chemical Materials Agency (CMA) currently oversees contracts for the operation of chemical agent stockpile incineration facilities at four disposal sites. Because the period of time required to dispose of these chemical agents has grown beyond that originally planned, the Army is becoming concerned about the possibility of growing operational problems as the processing equipment ages. To help address these concerns, the CMA requested the NRC to assess whether current policies and practices will be able to adequately anticipate and address facility obsolescence issues. This report presents a review of potential infrastructure and equipment weaknesses given that the facilities are being operated well beyond their original design lifetime; an assessment of the Army's current and evolving obsolescence management programs; and offers recommendations about how the programs may be improved and strengthened to permit safe and expeditious completion of agent stockpile destruction and facility closure.

Book Synopsis Exploring a Business Case for High-Value Continuing Professional Development by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Exploring a Business Case for High-Value Continuing Professional Development written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing education, continuing professional development, and high-value continuing professional development exist along a continuum. Continuing education (CE) often is associated with didactic learning methods, such as lectures and seminars, which take place in auditoriums and classrooms, and is often viewed by health professionals as merely a path to maintaining licensure and certification through the accumulation of credits. Continuing professional development (CPD), in contrast, embraces a wider array of learning formats and methods that are driven by learners. The Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education hosted a workshop in April 2017 to explore the value proposition for CPD. Forum members and workshop participants gathered to learn about innovative CPD programs around the world, to consider the perspectives of those who invest in CPD, and to discuss the business case for CPD. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
