Book Synopsis Origins of Attitudes Towards Animals by : Jenia Meng
Download or read book Origins of Attitudes Towards Animals written by Jenia Meng and published by Jenia Meng. This book was released on 2009 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins of Attitudes towards Animals is a truth-seeking journey that takes the study of attitudes towards animals to the global scale. The book relies on rigorous mathematical analysis of large amounts of data to make unprecedented discoveries about animal protection. Origins of Attitudes towards Animals steps off the path of focusing on animal welfare, which is only one aspect of animal protection, and reveals the science, philosophy, and cultural factors behind different groups of peoples' attitudes towards animals, worldwide. The book is based on the results of the ground-breaking survey research project, Global Attitudes to Animals Survey, which was initiated and managed by the author. Thousands of people around world were involved in the project, including many renowned academics, who worked as collaborators. The book also includes comprehensive and critical reviews of a large amount of existing literature. The quality of the study, in consideration of the issues it covers, the number of survey participants and the complexity of the mathematical methods applied, has no peers in academia. The book is a must-read for animal activists and people who are interested in the academic study of animal protection, and it contains a treasure-trove of data for researchers. To gain a full understanding of the study, knowledge of key mathematical techniques, such as factor analysis is required. Areas covered by the book include: Animal behaviour, anthropology, biology, chemistry, cosmology, cultural study, ethics, finance, history, mathematics, philosophy, physics, psychology, religion, and veterinary science. It is also available as an E-Book.

Book Synopsis Hormonal Therapy for Male Sexual Dysfunction by : Mario Maggi
Download or read book Hormonal Therapy for Male Sexual Dysfunction written by Mario Maggi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hormonal therapy offers a potentially powerful approach to the treatment of sexual disorders in men. However the interplay of different hormones within different bodily systems is carefully balanced; judicious judgement is required in the therapeutic use of hormones to minimize unwelcome side effects. A better understanding of how hormones work will help the physician to better tailor therapies for improved sexual responses in men. Hormonal Therapy for Male Sexual Dysfunction will provide the rationale for hormonal therapy in male sexual disorders, explaining the language of sexual endocrinology and its application in clinical practice. The aim of this book is to provide a clinical 'in the office' or 'at the bedside' guide to effective patient care for sexual medicine physicians, urologists, gynecologists and other health-care providers in practice and in training. The tone will be practical, not academic. The working assumption is that readers want to know what (and what not) might or should be done, without over emphasis on the why. That said, it is important to review the crucial basic science necessary for effective diagnosis and management, and to provide reminders in the context of the practical chapters. It will not be heavily referenced, in line with a more practical approach. This allows for smoother reading (and also relieves the burden of comprehensive citing from authors). Key evidence (clinical trials, Cochrane or other meta analyses) should be summarized in 'Evidence at a Glance' boxes and key references such as reviews, major papers can be provided in the ‘selected bibliography’ at the end of each chapter. Practical guidance will be provided through: the use of algorithms and guidelines where they are appropriate 'Tips and Tricks' boxes – hints on improving outcomes perhaps via practical technique, patient questioning etc 'Caution' warning boxes – hints on avoiding problems, perhaps via contraindications 'Science Revisited' – quick reminder of the basic science principles necessary for understanding

Download or read book Occupational Health Practice written by R. S. F. Schilling and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupational Health Practice is a comprehensive account of the practice of protecting and improving the health of people at work, with some emphasis on the special needs of workers in developing countries. Topics covered by this book include the functions of an occupational health service; special examinations in occupational medicine; uses and methods of epidemiology; and ergonomics. The mental health of people at work, prevention of occupational disease, and ethics in occupational health practice are also discussed. This book is comprised of 22 chapters and begins by outlining national developments in occupational medicine, along with the different forms of service provided by private enterprise and the state. The factors that influence a nation or an industrial organization to pay attention to the health of people at work are also considered. The discussion then turns to the importance of health to one's work, the functions of an occupational health service, and prevention of accidents and occupational disease. Methods used in the study of groups of workers are described in sections on epidemiology, field surveys, and the collection and handling of sickness absence data. The text also looks at ergonomics, occupational hygiene, and ethics and education in occupational health. This monograph will be useful to physicians, hygienists, nurses, and safety officers working in the field of occupational health; to those whose interests encompass occupational health, but cannot attend a course; and to medical and non-medical specialists in related fields.

Download or read book Retrotopia written by Zygmunt Bauman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have long since lost our faith in the idea that human beings could achieve human happiness in some future ideal state—a state that Thomas More, writing five centuries ago, tied to a topos, a fixed place, a land, an island, a sovereign state under a wise and benevolent ruler. But while we have lost our faith in utopias of all hues, the human aspiration that made this vision so compelling has not died. Instead it is re-emerging today as a vision focused not on the future but on the past, not on a future-to-be-created but on an abandoned and undead past that we could call retrotopia. The emergence of retrotopia is interwoven with the deepening gulf between power and politics that is a defining feature of our contemporary liquid-modern world—the gulf between the ability to get things done and the capability of deciding what things need to be done, a capability once vested with the territorially sovereign state. This deepening gulf has rendered nation-states unable to deliver on their promises, giving rise to a widespread disenchantment with the idea that the future will improve the human condition and a mistrust in the ability of nation-states to make this happen. True to the utopian spirit, retrotopia derives its stimulus from the urge to rectify the failings of the present human condition—though now by resurrecting the failed and forgotten potentials of the past. Imagined aspects of the past, genuine or putative, serve as the main landmarks today in drawing the road-map to a better world. Having lost all faith in the idea of building an alternative society of the future, many turn instead to the grand ideas of the past, buried but not yet dead. Such is retrotopia, the contours of which are examined by Zygmunt Bauman in this sharp dissection of our contemporary romance with the past.
