Book Synopsis Contestatory Cuban Short Story of the Revolution by : José B. Alvarez
Download or read book Contestatory Cuban Short Story of the Revolution written by José B. Alvarez and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: José Alvarez, in Contestatory Cuban Short Story of the Revolution, presents a unique analysis of counter-cultural narratives written in Cuba. Because the short story, to a great extent, never ceases to be a marginal production, Alvarez approaches the Cuban short story with the rigor of contemporary cultural studies, which involves the theoretical imperative of examining cultural production as an ideological reading of the sociopolitical context in which it occurs and in which it is distributed, consumed, and interpreted. This book complements other books written about the works of Reinaldo Arenas, Jose Lezama Lima, Virgilio Pinera and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing roughly 850 entries about Spanish-language literature throughout the world, this expansive work provides coverage of the varied countries, ethnicities, time periods, literary movements, and genres of these writings. Providing a thorough introduction to Spanish-language literature worldwide and across time is a tall order. However, World Literature in Spanish: An Encyclopedia contains roughly 850 entries on both major and minor authors, themes, genres, and topics of Spanish literature from the Middle Ages to the present day, affording an amazingly comprehensive reference collection in a single work. This encyclopedia describes the growing diversity within national borders, the increasing interdependence among nations, and the myriad impacts of Spanish literature across the globe. All countries that produce literature in Spanish in Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia are represented, covering both canonical authors and emerging contemporary writers and trends. Underrepresented writings—such as texts by women writers, queer and Afro-Hispanic texts, children's literature, and works on relevant but less studied topics such as sports and nationalism—also appear. While writings throughout the centuries are covered, those of the 20th and 21st centuries receive special consideration.

Book Synopsis A Short History of Revolutionary Cuba by : Antoni Kapcia
Download or read book A Short History of Revolutionary Cuba written by Antoni Kapcia and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few island nations have stirred the soul like Cuba. From Hemingway's intoxicating Havana to Ry Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club, outsiders have persistently been fascinated by Cuba for its music (jazz to rumba), its rich literature, its art and dance (danzón to mambo) and perhaps above all for its bold experiment of a socialist revolution in action. Antoni Kapcia shows how the thaw in relations between Cuba and the USA now makes a fresh appraisal of the country and its modern history essential. He authoritatively explores the 'essence' of the Cuban revolution, revealing it to be a maverick phenomenon tied not so much to socialism or Communism for their own sakes but instead to an idealistic vision of postcolonial nationalism. Reassessing the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, the author examines the central personalities: not just the famous trio of Che Guevara, Fidel and Raúl Castro in shaping the ideas of the revolution but, still further back, the visionary ideology of José Martí. Kapcia's book reflects on the future of the revolution as aúl nd his government began to cede power to a new generation.

Download or read book Cuban Grit written by John Phillips and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cuban Grit uses a combination of suspense, action, and romance to tell a captivating story of a future revolution in Cuba, all the while diving into topics such as personal freedoms, the relationship between Cuba and the United States, and the power of the news media. When the oppressive ruler of Cuba stepped down in 2018, the Cuban people led by Javier Hernandez started a revolution to prevent another oppressive ruler from taking power. Javier's beloved wife Vanessa Hernandez was publicly assassinated by an unidentified sniper while peacefully protesting in December 2018. Her death led to worldwide outrage and ultimately the United States backing the revolution. With the help of the United States military, the rebels were able to overthrow the oppressive government on June 26, 2019. The Cuban people were led to believe that the United States military would only occupy Cuba for a one year reconstruction period in order to maintain peace while a new democratic government was created. Several years have now passed, and the United States military presence has increased to the point of militant rule. It now appears that Cuba traded one oppressive ruler for another, and the Cuban people are growing restless for the freedom they believe they deserve. Meanwhile in the United States, first generation, Cuban-American, Chevita Diaz, is an American news reporter that begins to question the purpose of the United States military in Cuba, and what it may mean for the upcoming 2026 election. Chevita observes that the United States government is becoming more and more powerful, and she is concerned about the future of her country. If Chevita and Javier can keep from letting their feelings for each other stand in the way of their goals, they just may form the perfect partnership to change the world.
Book Synopsis Cuban Currency by : Esther Katheryn Whitfield
Download or read book Cuban Currency written by Esther Katheryn Whitfield and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, during an economic crisis termed its “special period in times of peace,” Cuba began to court the capitalist world for the first time since its 1959 revolution. With the U.S. dollar instated as domestic currency, the island seemed suddenly accessible to foreign consumers, and their interest in its culture boomed. Cuban Currency is the first book to address the effects on Cuban literature of the country’s spectacular opening to foreign markets that marked the end of the twentieth century. Based on interviews and archival research in Havana, Esther Whitfield argues that writers have both challenged and profited from new transnational markets for their work, with far-reaching literary and ideological implications. Whitfield examines money and cross-cultural economic relations as they are inscribed in Cuban fiction. Exploring the work of Zo Valds, Pedro Juan Gutirrez, Antonio Jos Ponte and others, she draws out writers’ engagements with the troublesome commodification of Cuban identity. Confronting the tourist and publishing industries’ roles in the transformation of the Cuban revolution into commercial capital, Whitfield identifies a body of fiction peculiarly attuned to the material and political challenges of the “special period.” Esther Whitfield is assistant professor of comparative literature at Brown University.
