Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary Socialism I thought it necessary to bestow any separate treatment on what is called State Socialism; because that is either a mere general expression for any undue extension of the power of the State for the amelioration of the labouring classes, or it is the specific name of a party in Germany whose programme is just the ordinary socialist programme of nationalising land and the instruments of production, but who seek to carry it out gradually by means of the existing State, the Social Monarchy of the Hohenzollerns, instead of doing so all at once by means of the Social Democratic Republic; and in either case the phase of opinion the expres sion represents is substantially described and discussed in various parts of the following work. On the other hand, I have introduced a chapter on Henry George, although he is not a socialist, because his doctrines are in many respects closely allied with those of socialism, and because he has done more than any other single person to stir and deepen in this country an agitation which, if not socialistic, at least promises to be a mother. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sidelights on Contemporary Socialism The present volume, like several of the author's earlier works, is made up of lectures delivered from time to time, somewhat revised to meet the requirements of publication in book form. The lectures differ from all the author's lectures on Socialism heretofore published in that, instead of being addressed to non-Socialists in the interests of the Socialist propaganda, they were addressed to his fellow Socialists and deal with various problems within the Socialist movement itself. They are fairly typical, in spirit and substance, of the lectures which responsible Socialists are constantly delivering to their comrades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Karl Marx and Modern Socialism This book is not in any way an anti-collectivist pamphlet; nor does it claim to be either an original or a profound study of Marxism. But the life of Marx is so little known, either by friend or foe, and his teaching so often reduced to a few bald shibboleths, that there may perhaps be room for a sketch of him as he was in relation to the thought and the circumstances of his age, describing at the same time, in rough outline, the development of the labour movements of Europe to whose growth he contributed so much. The writer is one of those who are so genially described in certain quarters as "class-biassed teachers in Universities," but he can plead practical knowledge of W.E.A. Tutorial Classes as, in some sense at least, a corrective to academic prejudice, and he is anyhow old-fashioned enough to doubt whether the writing of history must of necessity be only a class, or mass, interpretation of the past. Marx has certainly had less than justice done him hitherto because class interpretations have made him out as either an impeccable hero or a worthless ruffian: this deluge of praise and blame, in each case so often entirely undiscriminating, has had the effect of turning into an inhuman and almost legendary figure one who was in point of fact a very lovable, very exasperating but essentially real, though often wrong-headed, enthusiast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Socialism Various attempts to bring about a better social state have been made by earnest and noble-hearted men during the last hundred years. I leave aside such systems as those of the Moravians, because they cannot be regarded as in any sense schemes for the reconstruction of society. They, like the monastic communities, were merely attempts to create oases, fenced in from the world's evils, where men might prepare for a future life. The efforts I allude to are those classed as Socialistic; they were really crude forms of Communism. With these the name of Robert Owen will be for ever associated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Socialism: In Its Historical Development The Socialistic literature notwithstanding its vastness opens to view a gap, the almost total absence of a systematic, scientifically objective and critical investigation of what constitutes the doctrine of modern Socialism. Schaeffle sfamous book Quintessence of Socialism exhibits to a certain extent such a tendency but lacks every historical illustration and bears more or less a dogmatical stamp. This work, as well as Menger sNew State Doctrine are besides mere expositions of a part of the general doctrine of Socialism as they interpret only its positive side. Bourguin sContemporary Socialist Systems, one of the latest researches in this province, is to my mind far from fulfilling the void 1 have pointed out, being in a con-1siderable measure but an unconvincing attempt to confute Socialism as a positive doctrine.; Many good writings on Socialism have of late been published. It will suffice to mention Sombart swell-known book Socialism and the Socialist Movement during the Nineteenth Century which also belongs to that class of writings, the-- -4 . Book excerpt: Excerpt from Darwinism and Modern Socialism But since almost every man is an individualist until an oppressive environment sways him from his natural bias, the vigorous life of socialism as a theory requires accounting for, and the explanation I find, to a great extent, in the defects of our existing economic system. It cannot, in my opinion, be denied that capitalism through its present developments hampers the freedom of many who have no share in the vast accumulation of wealth. We must, therefore, combat socialism by trying to make our individualistic system work better and more freely. It must be our aim that none who have fairly good natural powers should be condemned to be mere spectators, while others compete for prizes. Equality of opportunity is alto gether chimerical, but it ought to be possible for any man, however poor, if he has any grit in him, to plant his foot on the bottom rung of the ladder - after that let him climb higher if he can. If the social organism were in this respect more healthy, if its circulation were more vigorous, if to drop metaphor - life offered fair chances to all, then socialism, so far from being a danger, would die a natural death. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morality of Modern Socialism The followmg chapters have been written with the purpose of throwing some light on so vitally important a subject. To achieve this end critically and systematically, the authentic sources of socialist ethics have been searched into, the most renowned and reliable of its expounders consulted, and their views reproduced in their own words, while the first and fundamental principles, the basis of all. Conclusions, have been accurately set forth and care fully elucidated. The materialistic theory underly ing socialist philosophy, however, does not require investigation, as this has been made at full length in another work lately edited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Modern Thought Numerous works have appeared within the last ten years on modern socialism, but the writer of this is not aware that anyone has shown the connection between the movement and the general current of thought, extending over the whole field of intellectual activity in the present day. And yet the true meaning of the socialistic movement cannot be understood without some comprehensive view of the age we live in, its philosophy of life, its leading scientific theories, its ethical conceptions, its peculiar mood of agnostic pessimism, its determined effort to perform the practical duties of life in spite of the weariness of spirit which comes of lost faith, its willingness to take up a standpoint on the sure ground of positive fact only, and its consequent preference for the Religion of Humanity or the Religion of Culture as substitutes for traditional creeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Socialism The ordinary volume on socialism is either biased in its presentation of the subject or it covers too small a portion of the field by being an historical sketch, a bit of propaganda literature, or merely a discussion of its theoretical foundation. In the following pages I have endeavored to avoid these objectionable features, in the hope that the volume may serve as a handbook to the busy reader or as a textbook for the classroom. My object has been to cover the field usually discussed and to present the subject in such a manner that the reader or instructor may be free to form and express his own opinions and to elaborate or to curtail any part of the discussion that he may desire. An effort has been made to state fairly and accurately both sides of the issues involved, and although I realize the practical impossibility of attaining this ideal, I cherish the hope that the following statement may prove satisfactory to the advocates as well as to the opponents of this widely discussed and much misunderstood subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Aspects of Socialism Socialism can be approached equally well from two opposite directions. It may be treated either as a social movement that aims to build up a new civilization, or as a new civilization that is gradually being embodied in a social movement. In my "Socialism As It Is" I followed the first method and discussed the economic and political features of Socialism exclusively; in the present volume I shall proceed in the reverse direction and deal exclusively with its larger aspects, its intellectual and spiritual side. As the two books were conceived and written together, they are parts of a single whole; but they are built on entirely independent foundations. In dealing with the economic and political movement I followed the inductive method; taking the activities of the movement itself as my point of departure, I concluded with its generalizations. In discussing the cultural movement I have followed the deductive method. Taking as my point of departure the philosophy of modern science, which I show to be wholly Socialistic in its bearings, and wholly dependent upon Socialism for its practical applications, I have first shown what results are reached by approaching each of the subjects I have discussed from this new standpoint, and I have then pointed out how the Socialist movement is, as a matter of fact, moving along the same line.
