Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Modern Thought Numerous works have appeared within the last ten years on modern socialism, but the writer of this is not aware that anyone has shown the connection between the movement and the general current of thought, extending over the whole field of intellectual activity in the present day. And yet the true meaning of the socialistic movement cannot be understood without some comprehensive view of the age we live in, its philosophy of life, its leading scientific theories, its ethical conceptions, its peculiar mood of agnostic pessimism, its determined effort to perform the practical duties of life in spite of the weariness of spirit which comes of lost faith, its willingness to take up a standpoint on the sure ground of positive fact only, and its consequent preference for the Religion of Humanity or the Religion of Culture as substitutes for traditional creeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Socialism: In Its Historical Development The Socialistic literature notwithstanding its vastness opens to view a gap, the almost total absence of a systematic, scientifically objective and critical investigation of what constitutes the doctrine of modern Socialism. Schaeffle sfamous book Quintessence of Socialism exhibits to a certain extent such a tendency but lacks every historical illustration and bears more or less a dogmatical stamp. This work, as well as Menger sNew State Doctrine are besides mere expositions of a part of the general doctrine of Socialism as they interpret only its positive side. Bourguin sContemporary Socialist Systems, one of the latest researches in this province, is to my mind far from fulfilling the void 1 have pointed out, being in a con-1siderable measure but an unconvincing attempt to confute Socialism as a positive doctrine.; Many good writings on Socialism have of late been published. It will suffice to mention Sombart swell-known book Socialism and the Socialist Movement during the Nineteenth Century which also belongs to that class of writings, the-- -4 . Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism in Thought and Action In the year 1900, a student would have searched American literature in vain for any adequate expression of socialism written by a sympathetic student of the subject in this country, and published by a non-socialist publishing house. From that year until the outbreak of the European war, however, volume after volume issued from the press and, by the summer of 1914, practically every phase of socialist theory and tactics had been carefully treated. Since the first of August, 1914, revolutionary changes have taken place in the socialist movement and philosophy. In many countries socialist theory, for the first time, under the most difficult circumstances, has been brought face to face with reality, and the socialist movement has evolved from a small, minority group to a powerful factor in the life of the people. The war has given a great impetus to the guild socialist idea, with its emphasis on producers' control of industry and its insistence on the development of personality as the ultimate goal of society. It has afforded world-wide publicity to the soviet form of the state, with its demand for occupational representation and its temporary "dictatorship of the proletariat." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Socialism Great changes are long in the preparing, and every thought that meets ultimately with wide acceptance is lying inarticulate in many minds ere it is syllabled out by some articulate one, and stands forth a spoken Word. The Zeitgeist has its mouth in those of its children who have brain to understand, voice to proclaim, courage to stand alone. Some new Truth then peals out, sonorous and far-sounding as the roll of the thunder, melodious to the ears attuned to the deep grand harmonies of Nature, but terrible to those accustomed only to the subdued lispings of artificial triflers, and the murmurs which float amid the hangings of courtly halls. When such an event occurs a few hearken, study, and then rejoicingly accept the new Truth; these are its pioneers, its apostles, who go out to proclaim it to the as yet unbelieving world. They meet with ridicule, then with persecution; for ever the new Truth undermines some hoary Lie, which has its band of devoted adherents living on the spoils of its reign. Slowly, against custom and tradition, against selfishness and violence, even against indifference, deadliest foe of all, this band of devoted teachers makes its onward way. And the band grows and grows, and each convert becomes in his turn a pioneer; until at last the victory is won, and the minority has become the majority; and then the time comes for some new Truth once more, and the old struggle is gone over afresh, and so again and again; and thus the race makes progress, and humanity climbs ever upward towards the perfect life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary Socialism I thought it necessary to bestow any separate treatment on what is called State Socialism; because that is either a mere general expression for any undue extension of the power of the State for the amelioration of the labouring classes, or it is the specific name of a party in Germany whose programme is just the ordinary socialist programme of nationalising land and the instruments of production, but who seek to carry it out gradually by means of the existing State, the Social Monarchy of the Hohenzollerns, instead of doing so all at once by means of the Social Democratic Republic; and in either case the phase of opinion the expres sion represents is substantially described and discussed in various parts of the following work. On the other hand, I have introduced a chapter on Henry George, although he is not a socialist, because his doctrines are in many respects closely allied with those of socialism, and because he has done more than any other single person to stir and deepen in this country an agitation which, if not socialistic, at least promises to be a mother. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Aspects of Socialism Socialism can be approached equally well from two opposite directions. It may be treated either as a social movement that aims to build up a new civilization, or as a new civilization that is gradually being embodied in a social movement. In my "Socialism As It Is" I followed the first method and discussed the economic and political features of Socialism exclusively; in the present volume I shall proceed in the reverse direction and deal exclusively with its larger aspects, its intellectual and spiritual side. As the two books were conceived and written together, they are parts of a single whole; but they are built on entirely independent foundations. In dealing with the economic and political movement I followed the inductive method; taking the activities of the movement itself as my point of departure, I concluded with its generalizations. In discussing the cultural movement I have followed the deductive method. Taking as my point of departure the philosophy of modern science, which I show to be wholly Socialistic in its bearings, and wholly dependent upon Socialism for its practical applications, I have first shown what results are reached by approaching each of the subjects I have discussed from this new standpoint, and I have then pointed out how the Socialist movement is, as a matter of fact, moving along the same line. To achieve this end critically and systematically, the authentic sources of socialist ethics have been searched into, the most renowned and reliable of its expounders consulted, and their views reproduced in their own words, while the first and fundamental principles, the basis of all. Conclusions, have been accurately set forth and care fully elucidated. The materialistic theory underly ing socialist philosophy, however, does not require investigation, as this has been made at full length in another work lately edited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialists and Socialism F you've nothing else to do and are at all interested in the subject, suppose you come along with me, and have a look at the Howling Dervishes. It takes all sorts of folks to make a world, you know, and the Howling Dervish is a time-honored institution. He has enormous faith in himself, and no amount of the opposition literature could exterminate him. He's a fix ture, the Howling D. Is, and we must reconcile ourselves to him, as we do to other inevitable and unescapable actualities. The most amusing thing about the modern H. Dervish is, that he considers himself something new under the sun. He isn't. Plato dreamed of him; ancient Sparta knew him well: each savage tribe had to shake him off and even the American colonies experimented with him. In their young and silly days. But the Socialists of our time bitterly deny the possession of a historic lineage, and wildly claim originality as they bowl and whirl. If you have no decided preference as to what part of the Socialist capon shall be put on your plate, I'll begin with young Robert Hunter. Young Robert is the Socialist leader who worked a get-rich-quick scheme by marrying a millionaire's daughter, - after which he published a book on Poverty, and began to wear pink socks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject stop short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. It is in this spirit that I have endeavoured to set forth the main points in the recent literature of Socialism. The chief books published on the Continent as well as the English literature of the subject have been thoroughly examined, and every effort has been made to secure a just and accurate account of the main issues. The periodical literature of Socialism has also been investigated to the best of my ability. It is so extensive that an absolutely complete knowledge is unattainable, but I hope that few important omissions will be found. In the Supplement I have given chapters on Revolutionary Syndicalism; Recent Developments of American Socialism; and Notes on Australian Socialism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (october, four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. Most of us feel that we know what Socialism is until we begin to define it. It may be called a modern social phenomenon. It springs from modern industrial conditions as they are combined with the more modern phases of sentiment and thought. A more particular definition would only invite criticism and dispute. Socialists themselves are not agreed on a definition. One says it is a religious movement,1 another a moral movement,2 another, a humanitarian movement.3 In the Communist Manifesto it is termed a proletarian movement, in the Chicago platform, a purely economic movement, in the Gotha and Erfurt Programs and other official utterances in Europe and America, a revolutionary movement, a political movement, a working-class move ment, a movement for the abolition of classes, for better working conditions, for social justice, for the emancipa tion of labor, etc., etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Such a statement must necessarily pass over many important details, and leave little room for illustration. The chief aim here has been to enforce the truth that the evolution of human society is a progress from Socialism to Socialism - from the simple, limited, tribal Socialism of early man to the complex universal Socialism already prepared in the womb of time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marx and Modern Thought The scarcity of authoritative Australian books on economic, social and political problems has been severely felt during the development of the Workers' Educational Association in the Commonwealth. On the foundation of the Federal Council of the W. E. A. in 1918 a means of overcoming this difficulty -was sought. Among the professors, lecturers, and tutors, who have so readily assisted the tutorial class movement, some had collected valuable material bearing on these problems. Through the Federal Council it was thought possible to assemble some of this material for publication in a series of monographs intended for the use of students in tutorial classes and elsewhere. Thus has the W. E. A. Series of publications been founded, and it is hoped that its utility will extend beyond the immediate needs of members of the W. E. A. to the growing number of students of social problems in Australia. The chief aim of the scries being to encourage investigation in fields of study hitherto surprisingly neglected in Australia, the W. E.
