Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines gender and professions in the 21st century. Historically the professions encompassed law, medicine and the church, all of which excluded women from participation. Industry and the 20th century introduced new professions such as engineering and latterly information technology skill and, whilst the increase in credentialism and accreditations open up further avenues for professions to develop, many of the ‘newer’ professions exhibit similar gendered characteristics, still based on a perceived masculine identity of the professional workers and the association of the professional with high level credentials based on university qualifications. In contrast, professions such as teaching and nursing, characterized as women’s professions which reflected women’s socially acceptable role of caring, developed as regulated occupations from the late 19th century. Since the 1970s and the women’s movements, anti-discrimination and equal opportunity legislation and policies have aimed to break down the gendered bastion of the professions and grant women entry. With growing numbers of women employed in a range of professions and the political importance of gender equality gaining prominence globally, Gender and the Professions also considers how women and men are faring in a diverse range of professional occupations. Aimed at researchers, academics and policy makers in the fields of Professions, Gender Studies, Organizational Studies and related disciplines. Gender and the Professions provides new insights of women’s experiences in the professions in both developed and less developed countries and in professions less often explored.

As it highlights, extant management research does not fully explain such emergent topics as Internet platforms, digital business models, and the decision-making of cleantech and circular economy companies. This volume serves to fill this lacuna.

Illustrating globalization as a phenomenon that is fundamentally altering corporate strategy, this book considers the complexities of globalization and its impact on international business. By doing so, it is entirely unlike other books on the subject. It is with this lucid approach that International Business provides students with an integrated overview of the fieldbusiness that is both theoretical and highly practical. The book is divided into three sections: Globalization and the context of international business Enterprise issues in the global economy Challenges for the global resource base Key topics covered include: regional integration, development and international production, global competition, culture and ethics, labour issues, financial integration and greening of international business.; The book also features contemporary international case studies, discussion questions and suggestions for further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media events have been described as broadcasts that involve an engaged audience viewing the same event simultaneously; though this definition is still relevant, the way media outlets interact with and react to their audiences has greatly changed. This is in part due to the emergence of social media platforms which allow a participatory audience, something that genre-specific television channels now rely on. Because these genre-specific, 24-hour channels seek to hook viewers with hyperbolic presentation and the illusion of large media events, the original definition must be adapted. Global Perspectives on Media Events in Contemporary Society seeks to re-define the role of the media in relaying information about current events within a modern context. Determining what constitutes as and the proper presentation of a media event is of great importance given the ubiquity of media consumption. This book approaches the topic from historical, ceremonial, and globally cultural perspectives while addressing news, sports, and other significant current events. It is a vital resource for students and teachers of communication, media, and journalism, professionals in the media industry, policy makers, and sociologists.

Book excerpt: This edited volume is the product of the Young Scholars on Turkey (YSOT) Conference held in Washington, D.C. on February 12, 2014. We have worked with the presenters of the conference to transform their paper presentations into chapter-long analyses of various domestic and foreign policy issues in Turkey. The diversity of papers in terms of content and approach, combining historical analyses, theoretical exercises, and case studies, makes this compilation an interesting read for both academic and policy audiences. Chapters provide us with fresh research findings from early career academics on domestic and foreign policy issues. We hope that they contribute to a growing number of nuanced and careful analyses on Turkey.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers presented at the National Symposium on “India-China Relations: Recent Developments”, organized by UGC Centre for Indian Ocean Studies, Osmania University, Hyderabad, in December 2015. The book deals with China’s growing geostrategic presence in the Indian Ocean and the infrastructural and development initiatives by China which caused ripples in the Economic, Strategic and Political spheres not only in the neighbouring countries but also around the world as well. The emergence of new institutions for development and cooperation and its impact on India-China relations is a cause of concern, for the two countries are likely to be major players in the region from a long-term point of view.
