Book excerpt: L'étude minéralogique, pétrographique et géochimique des andésites de la Formation de Huerto (Champ Volcanique de San Juan, Colorado) a permis de mettre en évidence deux lignées magmatiques contemporaines datées à 28 Ma : (1) les laves trachytiques à olivine, se différentiant à faible profondeur, en bordure de la caldera La Garita, par les processus de cristallisation fractionnée et d'assimilation d'une croûte supérieure granitique ; et (2) les laves andésitiques calco-alcalines à hornblende, riches en eau et en soufre, évoluant sous la partie centrale de la caldera à travers une croûte hybride et dense, avec une importante assimilation de la croûte inférieure, de la cristallisation fractionnée et de la cristallisation "in situ" (présence de xénolites syngénétiques de bordure de chambre). Ces deux séries semblent évoluer à partir d'un même magma parent tandis que leur caractère minéralogique et géochimique s'acquièrent par dégazage et rééquilibration à différents niveau crustaux.

Book excerpt: Des investigations sismiques et sédimentologiques ont été entreprises dans le but d'étudier l'évolution sédimentaire de la région au large de Nyon, en relation avec les processus lacustres et les changements climatiques qui ont eu lieu depuis le retrait du glacier du Rhône (18000 années BP) jusqu' à aujourd'hui. La source des sédiments a progressivement changé des eaux de fonte glaciaires aux cours d'eau locaux et un cône deltaïque, alimenté par les apports de la Promenthouse, de l'Asse et du Boiron, a commencé à se former dans la partie occidentale du Lac Léman. D'importants changements des apports sédimentaires ont eu lieu au cours de l'Holocène: six différents lobes deltaïques, progradant sur les sédiments tardiglaciaires, ont été reconnus au milieu du bassin par l'analyse séismostratigraphique. L'étude des propriétés magnétiques des séquences sédimentaires récoltées a fourni une courbe des variations séculaires du champ magnétique terrestre pour les derniers 16000 ans.

L'intrusion hôte n'exerce qu'un rôle passif dans leur genèse et fonctionne uniquement comme un réceptacle structural très favorable. La minéralisation est temporellement liée à un stade d'exhumation du bâti et à l'addition d'un flux de chaleur dans une croûte épaissie. Le piégeage de l'or au contact des sulfures microfracturées interviendrait à 5-10 km de profondeur par dilution d'un fluide salin précoce par des eaux superficielles.

La datation simultanée est un outil puissant pour déterminer la source d'un échantillon marin dont l'origine est incertaine. Une fois la source définie, on peut ensuite facilement travailler sur les échantillons terrestres, disponibles en plus grande quantité et dont les cristaux sont plus grands (datation de monocristaux).

Academic geoscientists have been interested in their petrogenesis and their potential value in defining the tectonic setting of the terranes into which they were intruded, and exploration geoscientists have become increasingly interested in the association of these rocks with major epithermal gold and porphyry gold-copper deposits. Despite this current interest, there is no comprehensive textbook that deals with these aspects of potassic igneous rocks. This book redresses this situation by elucidating the characteristic features of potassic (high-K) igneous rocks, erecting a hierarchical scheme that allows interpre tation of their tectonic setting using whole-rock geochemistry, and investigating their associations with a variety of gold and copper-gold deposits, worldwide. About two thirds of the book is based on a PhD thesis by Dr Daniel Muller which was produced at the Key Centre for Strategic Mineral Deposits within the Department of Geology and Geophysics at The University of Western Australia under the supervision of Professor David Groves, the late Dr Nick Rock, Professor Eugen Stumpf!, Dr Wayne Taylor, and Dr Brendon Griffin. The remainder of the book has been compiled from the literature using the collective experience of the two authors. The book is dedi cated to the memory of Dr Rock who initiated the research project but died before its completion.

After a century of working with such tools, geology has advanced from a descriptive science to an analytic s- encethatformulatesconclusionsbasedonexactvalues.Thetechnologyofradiogenic isotope geology has created a branch of science that considers the Earth as a planet generated within a Solar system and studies the subsequent evolution of geologic processes that has resulted in the present formation of our planet’s continents and oceans. The physicist Vitaly Ginsburg, Nobel Prize laureate, wrote recently: “If Kepler had been given information on orbital parameters of planets with modern precision, he would not have been able to formulate his laws”. Indeed, after development of laws of celestial mechanics, methods of measurements became so advanced and such numerous secondary distortion effects were found that to describe an orbit of a cosmic body by a curve of the second order would appear impossible. But it does not mean that Kepler’s laws are “cancelled”; they still occupy an honorable place in courses on celestial mechanics. A reasonable division into basic and secondary phenomena is accepted and the latter are entered as variations in the basic equations.
