Book excerpt: Los indices de calidad del agua dependen de caracteristicas fisicas, quimicas y bacteriologicas, propias de los ecosistemas acuaticos y que son evaluadas mediante el analisis de las muestras de agua; sin embargo, los valores obtenidos no son indices absolutos de contaminacion, sino que representan caracteristicas particulares del agua, en cuanto al parametro mismo. Asi, los Indices de Calidad de Agua, combinan una serie de variables o parametros del agua, generando una escala numerica representativa del grado de contaminacion del cuerpo de agua, el cual varia entre 0 (Agua muy contaminada) y 100 (Agua totalmente limpia). En este trabajo, el calculo del indice de calidad (ICA) se efectuo con los parametros utilizados por la NSF en su WQI: Coliformes fecales, pH, Solidos totales, DBO, OD, Fosfatos, Nitratos y Turbidez, segun describen diversos autores. Los principales parametros que afectaron al indice de calidad del agua en el Tecolutla fueron: DBO, coliformes totales, fosforo y nitratos, lo cual es indicador de contaminacion antropogenica. A partir de este estudio, se deben de retomar algunas recomendaciones para la gestion de este recurso en la cuenca del rio Tecolutla, Ver.
