Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constructive Beekeeping For this system or theory of housing bees I am making no extravagant claims, and had no thought of giving the public the result of my study and experiments until I had given them a test of a few more years, but the present necessity for increased production makes it the first duty of every person to stimulate in every way that he can this production; and if this system proves to be that will-of-the-wisp that the beekeepers have been chasing, a conclusion will be reached sooner than could be by my individual effort. Book excerpt: CONSTRUCTIVE BEEKEEPING: The Classic Guide for the Practical Beekeeper provides expert instructions on building and maintaining beehives, offering detailed and easy to follow techniques for all phases of honey production with specific emphasis on temperature, wind, moisture, evaporation, sunshine, altitude and fostering the fertility and vigor of the queen. "Bees always respond to similar treatment under like conditions by giving uniform results. The beekeepers' trouble is that he makes his treatments uniform but not his conditions." "Commercial beekeeping has for its object the production of the maximum quantity of well ripened honey at a minimum of cost. Swarming adds greatly to the cost of producing honey. Most methods of swarm-prevention have in them the element of destructiveness. Ventilating, removing the queen, shaking the bees, removing the brood, exchanging brood-bodies, loosening the cover, all destroying something that the bees have done, or adding to the work to be done in the hive. Let me state here that you are not going to be told that absolute swarm-prevention is a possibility, nor will you be told that honey can be produced by absent treatment. What you will get from a good understanding of the following pages is that the beekeeper who takes advantage of the laws relating to condensation of vapor, and follows where the bees have been leading will have advanced one step nearer the swarm less bee. Instead of going to the hive and telling the bees (by manipulations) "don't do this" ; say to them "keep all your brood, keep your queen, keep the cold damp air out of the hive and I will make your hive so perfect a condenser of water vapor that the work of evaporating water from the nectar will be done quickly." We will bring team-work into play, and each get the benefit of every advantage gained. Constructive beekeeping helps by getting the honey ripened quickly each night and stored out of the way of the queen. The hive will then be maintained in such a condition that the bees have the greatest amount of comfort in relation to the results produced." "When we compare evaporation by the aid of ventilation with that which takes place aided by condensation, and give this an application of the laws of heat, with its three ways of communication; conduction, convection and radiation, the tension of vapors; and the stillness, dryness and density of the atmosphere, our conclusion must be that condensation is so uniform in its results, that it eliminates everything ascribed to locality, but the number of flowers and the weather conditions that affect the flight of bees and the flow of nectar. All other Conditions, by the aid of condensation, can be controlled by the beekeeper. Ventilation and shade each make more room in the hive, but not with uniformity under all conditions; So we must add to the treatments we give the bees, a well varnished inner surface to the hive, and a cover that, at no time, permits of upward ventilation. Then the bees will be able to keep the nectar out of the way of a queen, whose egg-laying capacity is increasing daily. Room, and the procedure whereby the bees automatically make more room as they need it, is the single thing that we have to consider in urge prevention."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thousand Answers to Beekeeping Questions The remedy is not difficult to imagine. If possible, let the hive be in a cool, shady place. A temporary shade, and Sprinkling with water will serve a good turn. Give plenty of chance for air. Some practice leaving the covers of the hives raised an inch or so for two or three-days. Some give two stories to the swarm, taking away the lower story after two or three days. Either of these plans provides to some extent against an overheated dwell ing. Some practice giving a frame of brood to the swarm, with the idea that the bees will feel that they cannot afford to abandon so valuable a piece of property. In any case, if all laying queens are clipped no prime swarm can abscond unless it joins, or is joined, by some other swarm having a queen with whole wings. The queen with clipped wing may be lost, but it is better to lose the queen alone than to lose both queen and swarm. Swarms may abscond, also, if they are secondary or after swarms and the queen has not mated. When she goes out for her wedding flight, the swarm may follow her. The system described has been taken from many sources, so it is impossible to give credit to all who have contributed through their books and their writings to our bee journals. More is due to Mr. G. M. Doolittle than any other, for to him we owe the invention of artificial cell cups and the art of grafting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping: A Discussion of the Life of the Honeybee and of the Production of Honey The present book is the result of an effort to present a logical discussion of the various phases of the complex subject of beekeeping. It was not planned as a book of rules to which one may go for directions for each day's work, for beekeeping cannot be treated correctly in such a way. The activities of bees vary during the seasons and no two localities present to the bees and their owners exactly the same environmental conditions, so that the successful beekeeper is one who has a knowledge of the activities of bees, whereby he can interpret what he sees in the hives from day to day, and who can mold the instincts of the bees to his convenience and profit It has seemed desirable in the early chapters to discuss bees as they exist without man's interference, thus giving the foundation on which the practice of beekeeping rests. The beekeeper is not especially interested in the anatomy of the bee and, while it is necessary to use illustrations of various organs and to describe them briefly, an effort has been made to treat the bee as a living animal and to have the discussion deal with physiology and especially with activities, in so far as investigations have thrown light on these processes. In the preparation of the chapters devoted to the management of the apiary, an effort has been made to present the various systems of manipulations in such a way that the underlying principles shall be evident, rather than to attempt to describe each system as if it were separate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bee-Keeping In my position as Honorary Secretary of the British Beekeepers' Association, I was frequently asked to recommend a moderately priced book, which would instruct the inquirer how properly to manage his Bees; to my great regret I was unable to give a satisfactory reply, being acquainted with no work embracing the requisites of cheapness and completeness up to our then standard of knowledge, to bring it within the means of the many. The best work in the English language was unquestionably 'Langstroth on the Honey Bee'; but this, published in America, costs here ten shillings and sixpence. All others that I knew did not explain the various systems and apparatus sufficiently, or were too costly for general use. It was universally acknowledged that the Apiarian Exhibition of 1874 had given an immense impetus to Bee-culture, and I had great hopes that one of our clever and learned Bee-masters would have announced during the following Winter a new Work on the subject, which would fulfil the desired conditions; but the 1 st day of February, 1875, arrived, and I had not heard the wished-for news; so, reluctant to let the Spring appear without the needed help, I resolved, faute de mieux, to attempt the work myself; and, having sought and found a publisher, began and completed the First Edition of this leisure Manual in my leisure evening hours of the same month of February. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Bee-Culture, Its Methods and Management In reply to the query, "What will best mix with bee-keeping?" I have always replied: "Some more bees." When the conditions arc favorable, I am decidedly in favor of bee-keeping: as a specialty - of dropping: all other hampering: pursuits, and turning: the whole capital, time and energies into bee-keeping. If beekeeping-cannot be made profitable as a specialty, then it is unprofitable as a subsidary pursuit. If bee-keeping must be propped up with some other pursuit, then we better throw away bee-keeping, and keep the prop. General farming is very poorly adapted for combining with beekeeping, yet the attempt is probably made oftener than with any other pursuit. There are critical times in bee-keeping that will brook no delay, when three or four days or a week's neglect may mean the loss of a crop; and these times come right in the height of the season, when the farmer is the busiest. Leaving the team and reaper standing idle in the back field while the farmer goes to the house to hive bees, is neither pleasant nor profitable. Drawing in a field of hay, while the bees lie idle because the honey has not been extracted to give them store-room, is another illustration of the conditions with which the farmer-bee-keeper has to contend. The serious part of it is that the honey thus lost may be worth nearly or quite as much as the hay that is saved. Some special lines of rural pursuits, like winter-dairying or the raising of grapes, or winter-apples, unite with bee-keeping to much better advantage than general farming; but when bee-keeping is capable of absorbing all of the capital, time and energy that a man can put into it, why divide these resources with some other pursuit? It has been said that bee-keeping is a precarious pursuit, that it cannot be depended upon, alone, to furnish a livelihood; and, for this reason, it should be joined with some business of a more stable character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some of the Essentials of Beekeeping: From the Fifty-Ninth Annual Report of the State Board of Agriculture In commercial honey production, the selection of the apiary site receives deliberate consideration. Shelter from prevailing winds, a relatively level spot, upland and not swamp, remoteness from stock or pedestrians, aside from the general consideration of the honey producing flora or bee forage, are important. The matter of shade versus no shade in the apiary has attracted considerable attention, but without proving the advantage of one over the other. As a whole, bees thrive best in the open, but the hives should then be protected by shade boards or ventilated covers, in order to overcome the melting down of the combs or sulking or hanging out of the colony in excessive heat. It is usually thought that in the Open bees y earlier and perhaps gather more nectar than when colonies are under trees. Too dense shade, which results in dampness, is to be avoided.
