Book excerpt: The Stanford-Binet IV (SB-FE) and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) were administered to a sample of twenty-one mentally retarded/mentally ill adults who at the time of the testing were inpatients at a large public psychiatric hospital. The Wide Range Achievement Test-Revised (WRAT-R) was also administered to a smaller subset of fifteen subjects. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant disparity between the Full Scale IQ of the WAIS-R and the Composite SAS of the SB-FE. The WAIS-R Full Scale IQ and the SB-FE Composite score were also compared for Caucasian and African-American subjects, with the hypothesis that the two test measures would correlate better for the Caucasian subjects. It was also hypothesized that the Stanford-Binet would correlate better with the WRAT-R than the WAIS-R. Although the WAIS-R Full Scale IQ and the SB-FE Composite score did correlate significantly, at the same time, the SB-FE area scores were significantly lower than WAIS-R IQ scores. The WAIS-R and the SB-FE were found to correlate better for Caucasian subjects than for African-American subjects. The WRAT-R results were found to correlate best with the WAIS-R. These findings are discussed and suggestions for further research in this area are made.

Book excerpt: The constant and growing use of the Binet-Simon intelligence scale in public schools, institutions for defectives, reform schools, juvenile courts, and police courts is sufficient evidence of the intrinsic worth of the method. It is generally recognized, however, that the serviceableness of the scale has hitherto been seriously limited, both by the lack of a sufficiently detailed guide and by a number of recognized imperfections in the scale itself. The Stanford revision and extension has been worked out for the purpose of correcting as many as possible of these imperfections, and it is here presented with a rather minute description of the method as a whole and of the individual tests. The aim has been to present the explanations and instructions so clearly and in such an untechnical form as to make the book of use, not only to the psychologist, but also to the rank and file of teachers, physicians, and social workers. More particularly, it is designed as a text for use in normal schools, colleges, and teachers' reading-circles. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved).

Book excerpt: No other book reviews clinical neuropsychological assessment from an empirical psychometric perspective. In this completely revised and updated 2nd edition, the concepts and methods of psychometric neuropsychology are presented as a framework by which to evaluate current instruments. Newer methodologies and statistical techniques are discussed, such as meta analysis, effect size, confirming factor analysis and ecological validity. The explosion of research in this area since the publication of the first edition in 1989, has been incorporated, including a greatly expanded chapter on child assessment instruments. This volume is a must for the bookshelf of every clinical neuropsychologist as well as researchers and students. Anyone conducting forensic evaluations will especially find useful the information on reliability and validity when preparing for court appearances.
