The editors and contributors, all key experts in the field, use social science methods and current research to study the multidisciplinary field of leisure and its practical applications. Relevant career opportunities within the broad scope of the leisure services delivery system are also presented. The text emphasizes inclusivity and prepares students and professionals to incorporate inclusive practices into their work. Part I of Dimensions of Leisure for Life, Second Edition, examines the broad dimensions of leisure and its related industries. It looks at leisure as a social science and analyzes its societal value. Part II discusses how individual dimensions of leisure affect a person’s quality of life, physical and mental health, and level of physical activity. Part III details how recreation history informs contemporary leisure studies. It uncovers the intersection of leisure and society, family life, technology, natural resources, economics, and public policy. Part IV presents the study of leisure from a consumer perspective. Awareness of local options as well as age, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, and socioeconomic status; geographic distribution of leisure spaces; and stage of development all affect an individual’s participation in and level of involvement in leisure activities. Throughout the text, students will consider the role that recreation and leisure play in their own lives. They are encouraged to seek out the resources that are available to them, learn to recognize and challenge the obstacles to participation, and commit to a leisure plan that will enhance personal growth. The book’s full-color design contains photographs and illustrations that enhance student engagement. Learning outcomes and review questions in each chapter help students set learning goals and retain key information. Vocabulary terms allow students to identify important content. Dimensions of Leisure for Life, Second Edition, has been updated with current research and applications within the field. The second edition features the following enhancements to help students connect theoretical concepts to practical applications they can use in their future careers: On the Job sidebars in each chapter help students better understand common issues in the recreation and leisure workforce. Self-Exploration sidebars throughout the chapters provide opportunities for students to reflect on the role of leisure in their lives. A new chapter on leisure and family life discusses the impact of leisure on family structures and how to create valuable leisure experiences for all family members. The chapter on technology has been updated to reflect the digital advancements in leisure and their effect on individual equality and privacy. New interactive activities delivered online through HKPropel include chapter overviews, research assignments, key term flash cards, and chapter quizzes that can be automatically graded to assess student comprehension. Dimensions of Leisure for Life, Second Edition, addresses the ways that leisure affects individual lives and even our larger society. The more we understand the dimensions of leisure that contribute to quality of life for us and those in our communities, the more likely we are to appreciate them. Book excerpt: This study examined the leisure time physical activity behavior of college students using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and two constructs, descriptive norm and self-efficacy, from the Integrated Behavioral Model (IBM). A sample of college students (n = 621) from a large, public university in the southeastern United States participated. Data were collected via a self-report class-room based assessment battery. The assessment battery contained questions related to leisure time physical activity, TPB constructs descriptive norm and self-efficacy and demographic information. In general, the results of this research indicate the utility of the TPB in examining leisure time physical activity among college students. In addition, this study supports the inclusion of the IBM constructs descriptive norm and self-efficacy in examining leisure time physical activity. The TPB constructs; attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control were positively associated with intention to engage in leisure time physical activity among this sample of college students. The results of the final hierarchical regression model indicated that subjective norm was negatively associated with leisure time physical activity and intention was positively associated with leisure time physical activity behavior. In addition, the two IBM constructs descriptive norm and self-efficacy were positively associated with leisure time physical activity behavior. Finally, the results also found gender differences in the TPB and IBM constructs. For males, intention and subjective norm were significantly related to leisure time physical activity. For the females, intention, attitude and self-efficacy were significantly related to leisure time physical activity. This research has several implications for researchers and other college health professionals, with an interest in promoting leisure time physical activity. This research provides a better understanding of the leisure time physical activity behaviors of college students with regard to the TPB and IBM constructs (descriptive norm and self-efficacy). This examination of leisure time physical activity among college students should be of interest to those fostering programs, services and facilities to support this behavior, and particularly campus recreation professionals.

Book excerpt: What attracts students to a college--academics? recreational sports? the campus recreation center? If you selected all three answers, you are right. Most students choose a college or university for its academic merits, but another key factor in their decision is the recreational sports programs and facilities. Recreational sports are an important component to students' quality of life on campus and to a college's recruitment and retention of students. The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association contracted Kerr-Downs Research Associates to conduct a nationwide research project to determine the value of recreational sport on college campuses. More than 2,600 students from 16 colleges participated in this study, making it the largest representative group of college students from multiple colleges ever studied with respect to the value of participation in recreational sports. This study examined the value and contributions of recreational sports to participants' lives and documented the buying power of participants in recreational sports. The first of its kind in research, The Value of Recreational Sports in Higher Education makes a strong the case for campus recreational sports programs and facilities that will support the mission of your college into the future.

Book excerpt: In the United States, minorities are less physically active and in turn at higher risk for heart disease, diabetes and obesity. The purpose of my study is to examine the factors that influence physical activity in neighborhood parks and to answer: What aspects of park design and programming discourage physical activity participation in African American women? My goal is to identify barriers to physical activity and make recommendations for improving design and programming of a neighborhood park. The results of my research are relevant to the planning profession because planners can use public policy to combat inequality in the built environment. Many studies have related recreation access to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, age, and gender. While African American women are not the only disadvantaged population when it comes to access to recreation, they do have a higher risk for obesity. In trying to answer why African American women have higher rates of obesity, some studies have found that while willingness to participate in physical activity does not differ in white and black women, duration of physical activity does. My research employs a mixed methods approach to understand the barriers to physical activity experienced by African American women, in context of a neighborhood park. This study uses a physical assessment of James Mulligan Park and the surrounding neighborhood within Alexandria, Virginia. Following the physical assessment I piloted a survey to gather information on the barriers to physical activity. The pilot guided a final survey of seventeen participating African American women in the neighborhood. I hypothesized that the perception of park safety will have an effect on the rate of physical activity in African American women. This hypothesis points to a general barrier for all women. Based on literature review, I also expected to find barriers unique to African American women. The study concluded that African American women in this neighborhood share some barriers with all women and they also expressed some barriers unique to African American women. I found that personal barriers like "exercise tires me" was the most common, rather than perceptions of safety. In addition, I found culturally specific barriers, such as "exercising is not my cultural activity" and "I avoid exercise to protect my hairstyle." Based on my analysis of the setting and surveys I make several recommendations for the park and neighborhood.

Book excerpt: A recent report that examined university students across 23 countries found that 4 out of 10 students were physically inactive (Pengpid et al., 2015). Physical inactivity has been linked to certain types of preventable diseases (Myers et al., 2004). This study is an examination of the perceived factors influencing leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among African students attending the University of Regina (U of R) to understand their experiences with and perceptions of LTPA. The study further explored how LTPA contributes to students' wellness. This research was guided by an interpretive inquiry approach because it examines in-depth the meanings and understanding people create of their personal experiences and perceptions (Gephart & Rynes, 2004). Seven students were recruited for the study and semi-structured interviews were conducted during data collection. The transcripts were analyzed by way of inductive analysis, the most common approach for qualitative studies (Thomas, 2006). The results of the study provided insights into African students' perceived benefits of LTPA and constraints to participation. This thesis sets out suggestions for improving or maintaining LTPA participation among the students. Finally, it contributes to the body of knowledge on the perceived constraints to physical activity and LTPA participation among international students and provides suggestions for further research. Keywords: leisure-time physical activity, participation, motivation, constraints.
