Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades between the Progressive Era of the 1920s and the civil rights struggles of the 1960s were a period of profound change in the lives of southern women. The life of Sarah Towles Reed (1882–1978) illuminates and parallels many of these transformations. Over the course of her long public life as a teacher, labor union lobbyist, and activist for the rights of public school teachers, Reed emerged as a groundbreaking leader, unafraid of taking on the educational and political hierarchies of the South. A Will of Her Own is the life story of a woman who had a lasting impact on her times as well as the story of the times themselves. Reed engaged the most significant concerns of the liberal reformers during the first half of the twentieth century—the struggle for economic independence for women and the fight for women's rights, the effort to maintain intellectual freedom in the face of cold war paranoia, and the pursuit of racial justice. Her successes, as well as her failures, lend a personal perspective to these national trends. Her career also helps to clarify what it meant to be a southern liberal in the twentieth century and how the region's peculiar circumstances shaped the politics and strategies of southern reformers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of corrective justice are affordable housing with reliable running water and electricity; employment for parents and guardians to make a living wage; top-notch tutors for all children who need them; equity in school buildings, personnel, and resources; adequate medical and dental care for all students; and violence-free communities and home lives. These objectives are appropriate in a nation where children recite the words "with liberty and justice for all" at the start of each school day. The authors argue that until corrective justice has been established, high-stakes testing in public schools must be discontinued."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique biographical source revealing the experiences common to Mexican-Americans as well as the `diversity and complexity of their struggles to enter the mainstream.' Of the 270 men and women included, approximately 200 are contemporary Mexican-Americans. . . . [H]ighly recommended for large public libraries and special collections. Library Journal This biographical dictionary provides a useful source for identifying the important figures in the Mexican American/Chicano experience from 1848 to the present. It includes approximately 280 figures, many of whom are contemporary leaders in politics, education, the arts, sports, and other fields. Arranged alphabetically, the entries contain brief biographies of the people who have made Mexican American history while playing important roles in American society, the focus is primarily on public and professional life, with the most important figures receiving greater attention and more detailed histories. Most of the entries are followed by one or more bibliographic references; there are indexes of the biographees by state and by fields of activity. An outstanding feature of this sourcebook is the inclusion of a broader scope of information about each of the figures, such as their social and intellectual background, academic training, their development in their chosen fields, and signal achievements as shown by appointments, awards, and prizes.
