The Al liance was brought into existence to protect the agricultural and laboring classes against monopolies - not to make merchants - and its agency System is the only one I have ever seen that suits the present 'condition of the farmers and laborers of our country. C., August 8-9, 1905 Since your last meeting, and in opposition to your expressed wishes, the lease of the A. N. C. Railroad has been consummated. This action on the part 01 our State officials was brought about by the active efforts of.many of the best men along the line of said road, and also by the fact that the successful operation of this road was to a great degree handicapped by the unfortunate lease of the North Carolina Railroad, for which lease our late Governor and his advisers were in no way responsible. It is my individual opinion, and I have the backing of that distinguished jurist, Judge Bynum, that neither lease is in accordance with law or justice.
