Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolidation of Rural Schools in Manitoba The Agricultural College of the University of Illinois collected and published data re consolidation in 1904 at the request of the Illinois Farmers' Institute; and E. Davenport, Dean of the College of Agriculture, writes as follows in the preface to the first edition of the bulletin: "Letters were sent to all the States of the Union asking what had been done, if anything, and how it had succeeded. Opinions were collected both from professional educators and from farmers who had experienced the workings of the system, all from sources the most diverse. Aside from this, a trusted agent of the institution visited the region in Ohio where the system had been longest in use, with instructions to note all the conditions found both favorable and unfavorable. "The investigation was begun and conducted without bias or previously formed impressions as to the merits or demerits, advantages or disadvantages, of this method of administering the school system. As the investigation proceeded, however, the conviction that is inevitable to anyone who really studies this question gradually forced itself upon the consciousness and, in spite of efforts to the contrary, the reader will detect its presence in the mind of the writer at the time of putting the data in final form. "It is therefore the more necessary to assure the reader that this conviction arose during and by virtue of this investigation, and that it did not exist in advance; indeed, there was no opportunity for preexisting opinions, because the writer had never before given the slightest attention to the details of the subject." In the preface to the second edition, he says: "In the further study of this subject in its application to Illinois, there has quite unexpectedly come to the surface the surprising fact that in spite of all the arguments as to the impossibility of transporting pupils over "bad roads," the facts are that they are being transported now in large numbers, and have been for years all over the State, often travelling as far as seven miles and back daily during a high school course. True, it is being done at private expense and often for several members of the same family. But it is done, and many vehicles follow each other daily at all seasons and in all kinds of weather over all the roads of the State leading to high schools, and it is well within the facts to state that without a doubt more horses are actually employed in Illinois today in transporting the older children to village high schools, and more miles are travelled than would be necessary to transport all the children to central schools if the horses were coupled together and hitched to proper vehicles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolidation of Rural Schools It is this fact that makes such a bulletin valuable to the can did, earnest investigator. -if the bulletin is entirely successful it will leave him thinking. Serving the debater also serves the man who wishes to know both sides before making up his mind. Of course the editors cannot make a side strong which is inherently weak., They Can only give such arguments as are used in the actual discussion of the question. They cannot sift the arguments, however absurdly unsound they may be; and quoting arguments does not mean that the editors endorse them. Thanks are especiall'y due to Principal Ernest F. Ashbaugh, Bartlesville. Okla., for valuable assistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In any satisfactory system, transportation is necessary and must be provided. It is already here in many communities and it will come in all communities which are alive to the educational needs of the time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improvement of Rural Schools by Means of Consolidation It is believed that consolidation of rural schools is necessary if they are to become as efficient as it is possible to make them. Of late years considerable progress has been made in such con solidation throughout the state, as local communities have come to realize its advantages. These advantages are set forth in this pamphlet, which is issued for the use of school officials and the general public interested in one of the most serious problems today confronting educational authorities - the betterment of the rural school. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consolidated Rural Schools and Organization of a County System Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a bulletin on Consolidated Rural Schools, by George W. Knorr, special field agent of the Bureau of Statistics. This bulletin was prepared under the Chief of the Bureau of Statistics and by him transmitted to this Office for publication in the series of agricultural education publications. The statistical investigation upon which this bulletin is based extended over more than three years, and was made by Mr. Knorr under the direction of Assistant Secretary of Agriculture W. M. Hays. In the course of the investigation Mr. Knorr visited several hundred district schools and a large proportion of the typical consolidated rural schools recently established in this country. His statement that 95 per cent of the farmers who have thoroughly tried the consolidated rural school give it their indorsement and support, should command universal attention. These consolidated schools are gradually supplanting the one-room rural schools; they at once supply excellent graded eight-year elementary courses and one or more years of high-school work; and provide conditions under which trained teachers may instruct in agriculture and home economics. Many are now teaching these subjects in a thorough manner and thus lead in the long desired development of our belated system of schools for rural communities. Through these schools opportunities are afforded the Department of Agriculture and the state experiment stations for disseminating the results of their researches; new facilities are also afforded for the distribution of new varieties of plants and seeds which are being created by breeding. The information contained in this bulletin will be valuable to the scientists of this Department in enabling them to establish vital relations with country-life schools and aid in the movement to carry to every farm boy and girl the rich stores of knowledge now being rapidly accumulated through agricultural research. It will also be of great value to educators throughout the country who are interested in bringing about a better organization of country-life schools. I therefore recommend its publication as Bulletin 232 of this Office. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Page of the History of the Schools in Manitoba During 75 Years The first order for establishing a school, in this country, came then from Quebec and from a Catholic bishop. All those who have the least notion of the history of Canada, know that Bishop Plessis was a glory to the country by the force of his genius as well as by the splendor of his virtues. It is also well known that his authority over those who were under his jurisdiction, greatly contributed in keep ing Canada and the Northwest under the allegiance to Great Britain, at the time of the war with the United States. What every one does not know is that the first schools of the Red river are due to the instructions, given by him to his priests and followed by these mission aries, notwithstanding great difficulties. Another fact, not universally known, is that on account of the services that Mgr. Plessis had rendered to the crown, he had gained the confidence of the authorities, who had recourse to him, in the direction of public affairs, and who seconded his zeal, in the accomplishment of his own duties; one may be easily convinced of this by the following letter given by the governor-general to Mgr. Plessis, when the later decided to send priests and establish missions and schools in the Red river settlement.
