Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinations of cohesive and cohesionless soils are often encountered when evaluating the engineering properties of soils. The stress-volume characteristics of the mixed soil are found to vary according to the proportion of each component. If the cohesive soil composes more than a certain fraction of the material, the magnitude of volume change for a stress increment will be a function of the compressibility of the cohesive soil. When the amount of cohesive material is less than this fraction, volume change is controlled by the behavior of the cohesionless material. Two methods have gained wide acceptance for predicting the behavior of soil mixtures. If more than 50 percent of the material is fine grained, the Unified Classification System defines the behavior of the system by the characteristics of the fine grained material. The American Association for State Highway Officials requires 35 percent or more fine grained material to define fine grained behavior. The purpose of this investigation was to establish a method for predicting the compressional characteristics of a mixture controlled by cohesive materials and to determine the percentage at which the cohesionless soil began to control the behavior. The two sized system was first investigated theoretically. Relationships were established for predicting the behavior of the mixture in one dimensional consolidation and for determining the point of control by the cohesionless component. The validity of the theoretical approach was established by performing a laboratory investigation. The program included nine consolidation tests on specimens with varying proportions of sand and clay. The results of the laboratory investigation indicated that the theoretical relationship for calculating the compressional characteristics was valid if the percentage of sand was less than 65 percent of the total weight of solids. Above 65 percent sand the cohesionless material dominated the behavior of the system making the theoretical relationship invalid.

Book excerpt: Consolidation properties of bentonite-sand mixtures, as reclamation materials, were investigated in the one-dimensional consolidation test. From the relationships between the void ratio of nonclay fraction and consolidation pressure was found the existence of a threshold void ratio at which the frictional resistance becomes dominant during consolidation. The threshold value is slightly greater than the maximum void ratio of sand used for the mixtures.

Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book excerpt: Expansion or swelling behavior of expansive soil has always created problems in the field of geotechnical engineering. When any construction has been carried out on expansive soil without pre-knowledge of their properties under various environmental conditions, the damage is severe. One of the methods to find out swelling potential of expansive soil is the expansive index (EI). The present study investigates the reduction of EI for the two commercially available expansive soils i.e., kaolinite and bentonite when mixed with Ottawa sand and Class C fly ash. The percentages of Ottawa sand and Class C fly ash mixed with kaolinite and bentonite were 0 to 50% by weight. The results show that there is a significant reduction in the swelling properties of expansive soil with the addition of Ottawa sand and Class C fly ash. The reduction in expansive index ranged approximately from 10 to 50% and 4 to 49% for kaolinite and bentonite, respectively. Also the maximum swelling pressure of kaolinite and bentonite soil decreased approximately 93% and 64%, respectively with the addition of various percentages of Ottawa sand and Class C fly ash. These results help to identify the swelling potential and swelling pressure of expansive soil with different percentages of sand and fly ash which will be beneficial to the geotechnical engineer. Standard index properties test such as liquid limit, plastic limit and shrinkage limit test was conducted to see the characteristic of expansive soil when mixed with less expansive sand and Class C fly ash. Also, for these expansive soils one dimensional (1-D) consolidation characteristics was studied with sand and Class C fly ash mixtures and the results were compared with pure kaolinite and bentonite soil. Pre-consolidation (Pc) behavior, compression index (Cc) and recompression or swelling index (Cs) properties were also studied for the different percentages of sand and Class C fly ash with expansive soil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sand, clay and rock have to be excavated for a variety of purposes, such as dredging, trenching, mining (including deep sea mining), drilling, tunnel boring and many other applications. Many excavations take place on dry land, but they are also frequently required in completely saturated conditions, and the methods necessary to accomplish them consequently vary widely. This book provides an overview of cutting theories. It begins with a generic model, valid for all types of soil (sand, clay and rock), and continues with the specifics of dry sand, water-saturated sand, clay, atmospheric rock and hyperbaric rock. Small blade angles and large blade angles are discussed for each soil type, and for each case considered the equations/model for cutting forces, power and specific energy are given. With models verified by laboratory research, principally from the Delft University of Technology, and data from other recognized sources, this book will prove an invaluable reference for anybody whose work involves major excavations of any kind.

Book excerpt: The consolidation characteristics of saturated soft clay under repeated impact loading are studied by laboratory tests. Particularly, the influence of drainage conditions on consolidation and reconsolidation of soft clay are analyzed in detail. The uniqueness of the relationship between pore water pressure and reconsolidation volumetric strain is described, and the methods for determining the coefficient of reconsolidation volume compressibility and the reconsolidation compression index are given. It is demonstrated that the samples undergoing several stages of impact and reconsolidation show an apparent quasi-overconsolidation state, and have an increased shear strength. Models for predicting the deformation and the undrained strength of soft clay foundation from impact loading are also suggested. In the models, the conditions of partial drainage and stages of impact are taken into account. Calculated results by the present models are in good agreement with the test data.

Book excerpt: In November 2015, Buenos Aires, Argentina became the location of several important events for geo-professionals, with the simultaneous holding of the 6th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials, the 15th Pan-American Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (XV PCSMGE), the 8th South American Congress on Rock Mechanics (SCRM), as well as the 22nd Argentinean Congress of Geotechnical Engineering (CAMSIGXXII). This synergy provided a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss current and future practices in the areas of soil mechanics and rock mechanics, and their applications in civil, energy, environmental, and mining engineering. This book presents the proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials. As well as 118 articles selected for publication after peer review, it includes 7 lectures delivered by invited keynote speakers and the Third Bishop Lecture, delivered by Professor Herve Di Benedetto of the University of Lyon, France, who presented a reference work on the advanced testing and modeling of bituminous bounded and unbounded granular materials. The conference brought together practitioners, researchers and educators from around the world engaged in the understanding of the deformation properties of geo-materials before failure, and the small strain parameters as fundamental characteristics of geo-materials. The main topics covered by the symposium include experimental investigations from very small strains to beyond failure, including multi-physical approach; HTC M coupling behavior, characterization and modeling of various geo-materials and interfaces; and practical prediction and interpretation of ground responses: field observation and case histories.
