This book was released on 1981 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A list of factors was developed to aid in the selection of test species for bioassay and bioaccumulation potential studies with dredged material. The list was compiled after interviews with personnel involved in dredged material testing from the Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency, private consulting firms, and universities. The factors to be considered for the selection of test species included whether the organism was indigenous to the disposal site or closely related to an indigenous species; was available through collecting or purchasing; had a toxicological data base; could be maintained and cultured in the laboratory; was useful in acute, chronic, and bioaccumulation tests; was ecologically and economically important; had a wide geographic distribution, and was compatible with other test species in the test containers. For the selection of test species to determine bioaccumulation potential in the laboratory, the same factors were used with the additional considerations that the organism be large enough to provide sufficient tissue for chemical analyses and that they survive the 10-day exposure period.

Book excerpt: Three fish species, Cyprinodon variegatus, Fundulus similis, and Menidia menidia, were evaluated to determine which is most suitable as a bioassay organism for solid phase testing of dredged material. Acute toxicity and bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were monitored for 52 days of exposure to two types of dredged material collected from the New York harbor. Cyprinodon variegatus displayed the most consistent accumulation of PCBs. However, no definition statement can be made regarding acute toxicity response because of poor control survival, Review of the literature indicates the M. menidia is the most sensitive of the three species examined and, consequently, it is felt that this species should be strongly considered as a candidate for solid testing. It presents an integrated ecosystem approach by detailing effective assessment methods, considerations, and effects to each major component of marine and freshwater systems, including the benthos, plankton, and fish communities. The approaches emphasize defining habitat conditions (physical and chemical), toxicant bioavailability, factors influencing toxicity (lab and field), biomarkers, acute and chronic toxicity, study design, collection methods, and EPA management strategies. The book also explains how to integrate the assessments. Sediment Toxicity Assessment will be useful to to all environmental managers, environmental scientists, ecotoxicologists, environmental regulators, aquatic ecologists, environmental contractors and consultants, instructors, students, conservation commissions, and environmental activist organizations.

Book excerpt: This report describes numerous bioassay experiments where representative aquatic invertebrates were exposed to heavily contaminated sediments and standard liquid (elutriate) and suspended particulate phases of the sediments. The purpose of the work was to develop biological methods for assessing the effects of open-water disposal of dredged material on water column and benthic animals, prior to actual disposal. Sediments and liquid phases were analyzed for selected chemical constituents in conjunction with the bioassays. Sediment samples were collected from the Vicksburg area as well as from the Duwamish River at Seattle, the James River in Virginia, and shipping channels in New York Harbor. These materials contained a wide variety of environmental contaminants. Animals and control or reference sediments were obtained from relatively clean Gulf Coast areas or from the Mississippi River system near Vicksburg. Some organisms were obtained from other workers and cultured in the laboratory. Marine test animals included Acartia, Mysidopsis, Palaemonetes, Neanthes, Rangia, Mercenaria, and benthic amphipods and isopods. Freshwater animals included Palaemonetes (freshwater species), Daphnia, Corbicula, Musculium, and the isopod Lirceus. Survival of exposed animals was compared to control survival using statistical methods to determine a significant adverse effect. Preliminary sublethal bioassays using larval growth as the critical parameter were also accomplished.

Book excerpt: Fate and Effects of Sediment-Bound Chemicals in Aquatic Systems presents the proceedings of the Sixth Pellston Workshop, held in Florissant, Colorado on August 12–17, 1984. This book presents the development of scientific inquiry of hazards to the aquatic environment. Organized into 27 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of water quality significance of sediment-associated contaminants to aquatic life. This text then addresses the topic of the role of suspended and settled sediments in regulating the effects of chemicals in the aquatic environment. Other chapters consider the nature and extent of partitioning and bioavailability, which are key elements in research efforts toward assessing the effects of sediments on water quality. This book discusses as well the regulatory and management strategies for chemicals entering public water supplies. The final chapter deals with conclusions and recommendations identified during the workshop. This book is a valuable resource for biologists and environmental scientists.
