Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conserving Richmond's Battlefields: A Collaborative Project Among Concerned Citizens; Local Planning, Preservation and Promotion Groups; Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico Counties; The City of Richmond; The Commonwealth of Virginia; And the National Park Service With community guidance and review, thirty-two battlefield locations were identified and their condition assessed. During extensive public discussion of local concerns, issues, and goals, and based on a thorough resource evaluation, a collaborative approach to battlefield conservation surfaced. It is called the richmond CIVIL war heritage initiative. The goal is to conserve, through Cooperative private and public action, a necklace of Civil War battlefields from the North Anna River to Petersburg. These battlefields would be strung with clusters of high-quality heritage interpretive sites, recreation opportunities and related visitor services. The main elements in this approach include: A Heritage Council of community representatives that coordinates battlefield conservation, interpretation and promotion activities. A conservation incentive program for landowners and local governments within the battlefield settings that includes a formal recognition of the battlefield settings, a development review process that is responsive to historic values, landowner incentivesfor voluntary conservation (i.e. Resource identification, site planning assistance or project review) and conservation of critical community and battlefield values. Book excerpt: This book explores the unanticipated benefits that may arise after wars and conflicts, showing how the preservation of battlefields and the establishment of borderlands can create natural capital in the former landscapes of war. The editors call this Collateral Value, in contrast to the collateral damage that war inflicts upon infrastructure, natural capital, and human capital. The book includes case studies recounting successes and failures, opportunities and risks, and ambitious proposals. The book is organized in two sections. The first visits U.S., English, and French battlefield sites dating from medieval England to World War I. The second explores borderlands located on several continents, established to end or prevent conflict. Both of these can create value beyond their original purpose, by preserving natural areas and restoring biodiversity. Among the topics covered are: · Registering English Battlefields · Old forts and new amenities in the Southern Plains of the U.S. · Verdun, France, and the conservation of WWI cultural and natural heritage · Conservation lessons learned in the Cordillera del Condor Corridor of the Andes mountains · Korea’s DMZ and its nature preserve · Wakhan National Park, a mountainous buffer area between Afghanistan and Pakistan The book examines state-of-the-art applications of landscape ecology, including methods for change detection, connectivity analysis, and the quantification of ecosystem services. Also included is a chapter on a creative proposal for “Guantánamo 2.0,” which would transform the Gitmo detention facility into a peace park and ecological research center. A concluding chapter appraises the past, present, and future of Collateral Values. Collateral Values: The Natural Capital Created by Landscapes of War benefits a broad audience of advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and practicing professionals.

Book excerpt: In this exhaustively researched book, Georgie Boge and Margie Boge analyze the issues and controversies surrounding the preservation of Civil War battlefield sites, and offer a pragmatic development program designed to accommodate the needs of both historic preservation and economic growth. Not only do they provide a framework for developing actual preservation strategies, they show how important historical, cultural, and natural resources can be preserved with economic benefit to the community. After exploring the special importance of battlefield sites to the nation, the Boges discuss existing policies for preservation. Through extensive case studies, they demonstrate the inadequacies of current mechanisms, and present a detailed policy program that could effectively protect the remaining land, and also help save other historically or culturally significant sites.

Book excerpt: Following this historic battle, the United States Colored Troops (USCT) had proven their valor and taken their rightful place amongst heroes in America's history. In the predawn darkness of September 29, 1864, black Union soldiers attacked a heavily fortified position on the outskirts of the Confederate capital of Richmond. In a few hours of desperate fighting, these African-American soldiers struck a blow against Robert E. Lee's vaunted Army of Northern Virginia and proved to detractors that they could fight for freedom and citizenship for themselves and their enslaved brethren. For fourteen of the black soldiers who stormed New Market Heights that day, their bravery would be awarded with the nation's highest honor: The Congressional Medal of Honor. With vivid firsthand accounts and meticulous tactical detail, James S. Price brings the Battle of New Market Heights into brilliant focus with maps by master cartographer Steven Stanley.
