Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conservation of School Children The Conference on the Conservation of School Children under the auspices of the American Academy of Medicine was held at Lehigh University, South Bethlehem, on April 3 and 4, 1912. The sessions of the Conference were held in Drown Memorial Hall, which was kindly placed at the disposal of the Conference by the University authorities. At the first session (Wednesday, April 3rd, 2 P.M.) the President of the Academy, Dr. Alexander R. Craig, of Chicago, in calling the meeting to order, said: This Conference is called to discuss a subject that interests the public. We are grateful for your attendance and we want you to feel that this is not a meeting of the American Academy of Medicine but a conference of all interested in the subject. The discussions are open to any who have thoughts to add to those presented in the papers read, questions to ask or comments to make on the subject presented; yon are welcome to the floor of the conference whenever you will contribute to its discussions. The Secretary of the Academy then presented the program for the Conference and explained the registration system, making a distinction between the members of the Conference and visitors, a registration fee of two dollars being charged to the former which entitled them to a badge and a copy of the transactions of the Conference. He also called attention to the invitation of the President of Lehigh University for the Conference to make use of the University Commons, thus enabling the social opportunities of the meeting to be increased. The President introduced Henry S. Drinker, LL.D., President of Lehigh University, who said: Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Academy, our Guests: The University is highly honored to be allowed to be the host of this distinguished body and you are very welcome. We hope we shall be able to make you comfortable. It will certainly be our object and pleasure to do whatever we can to minister to your wants and show you how welcome you are. Book excerpt: The foundational reason for why we find it so difficult to rebuild school curricula around the needs of the modern world is that we lack an organizing framework that can help prioritise educational competencies, and systematically structure the conversation around what individuals should learn at various stages of their development. Four-dimensional education provides a clear and actionable first-of-its-kind organizing framework of competencies needed for this century. Its main innovation lies in not presenting yet another one-size-fits-all list of what individuals should learn, but in crisply defining the spaces in which educators, curriculum planners, policymakers and learners can establish what should be learned, in their context and for their future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conducting Research in Conservation is the first textbook on social science research methods written specifically for use in the expanding and increasingly multidisciplinary field of environmental conservation. The first section on planning a research project includes chapters on the need for social science research in conservation, defining a research topic, methodology, and sampling. Section two focuses on practical issues in carrying out fieldwork with local communities, from fieldwork preparation and data collection to the relationships between the researcher and the study community. Section three provides an in-depth focus on a range of social science methods including standard qualitative and quantitative methods such as participant observation, interviewing and questionnaires, and more advanced methods, such as ethnobiological methods for documenting local environmental knowledge and change, and participatory methods such as the ‘PRA’ toolbox. Section four then demonstrates how to analyze social science data qualitatively and quantitatively; and the final section outlines the writing-up process and what should happen after the end of the formal research project. This book is a comprehensive and accessible guide to social science research methods for students of conservation related subjects and practitioners trained in the natural sciences. It features practical worldwide examples of conservation-related research in different ecosystems such as forests; grasslands; marine and riverine systems; and farmland. Boxes provide definitions of key terms, practical tips, and brief narratives from students and practitioners describe the practical issues that they have faced in the field.
