Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the fascinating story of the policies and projects that resulted in doubling the size of British forests over the past eighty years and of the Acts and actors that played a role in this development. By the end of the century the area of forests in the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland) had risen to over two and three quarter million hectares and covered eleven per cent of the land area. Three quarters of them consisted of plantations. Few other countries - Ireland and Denmark are two - have achieved a comparable change in the rural landscape in favour of forestry over as short a time. Furthermore, from being in a deplorable state by the end of the First World War, British forests are now well above the European average in terms of productivity (wood yield per hectare). At the same time they are being called upon to meet increasingly heavy social and environmental demands from a dense, largely urbanised society.
Download or read book Heritage written by J.D. Fladmark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with policy, methods and techniques for the stewardship of our land and our cultural assets. The focus is on interpretation and presentation of heritage themes, and the papers should be of interest to those concerned with school and university curricula, those working in museums and galleries, and those in charge of parks and tourist enterprises. Individual contributions celebrate achievements and debate issues relating to the natural and built environment, the future of green tourism, planning and interpretation in museums, parks and private estates. The authors include: Professor David Lowenthal on cultural landscapes; Charles McKean on architecture; David Macmillan on the arts; John Purser on music; Elisabeth Luard on cooking; the Earl of Glasgow on the opening of a family estate to the public; and Gordon Baxter on the heritage of one of Scotland's great enterprise stories in the food industry. The main theme of the book is that we do not always take enough pride in our heritage which is often undervalued and neglected. Positive action is required to raise awareness, to foster respect for our inheritance and to generate a new kind of enterprise that will not endanger the heritage resources on which we depend for enjoyment and jobs.

Book Synopsis Planning and Ecology by : R. D. Roberts
Download or read book Planning and Ecology written by R. D. Roberts and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional planning is commonly defined as an activity which is concerned with the rational allocation or exploitation of resources for man's maximum short- and long-term benefit. The science of. ecology is the study of the basic components of these resources (soil, water, air etc. ) and their inter relationships with living organisms. Planning and ecology therefore have many common interests and, as such, have long been associated in resource management. This association was, for example, reflected as early as the 19th century in the writings of Patrick Geddes, the progenitor of modern town planning, whose training as a biologist led him to re-interpret the phenomena of urbanization in ecological terms (Geddes, 1886). Since the time of Geddes the place of ecology has declined in planning circles as other professions and considerations, initially public health and engineering, latterly economic and sociological, have become more central. The reasons for this shifting emphasis are three-fold. First, they reflect changing social attitudes and aspirations in the post-war period. Secondly, many other professions and persuasions (agriculturalists, foresters, in dustrialists etc. ) became organized as pressure groups and helped shape public attitudes and governmental actions. Thirdly, and by far the most important reason, is the prevalence of misconceptions about ecology. Too many people, perhaps misled by the debate surrounding the' environmental movement', equate ecology with conservation. In reality, conservation is but one component part of ecology.

Download or read book Changing Parks written by John S. Marsh and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book is a must for everyone concerned with the heritage and future of Canada’s parks. Contributors include an impressive assembly of noted park experts ranging from academic authorities and government parks personnel to concerned nonpolitical park supporters. Since the establishment of Banff National Park in 1885 and Algonquin Provincial Park in 1893, parklands have been part of Canada’s heritage. Where other protected areas, such as forest reserves, heritage rivers and greenways, have also been created, a more comprehensive view of the creation and management of conservation areas and marshland is discussed. Cooperative approaches to park management recognize the regional context of parks with respect to local communities, as well as the inclusion of more diverse groups of people, particularly Aboriginals. This work encourages the general public to take an interest in our priceless park heritage.
