Book excerpt: The defining question that must be answered for this generation of Americans is, "How do I conquer the fear of outliving my money?"My name is John Convery and for over 30 years I've been an advisor in the Northeast and South Florida peninsula helping people raise their financial awareness, broaden and deepen their education so that they can thrive in retirement and not just survive. As a matter of fact as host of Retire Yesterday Live Today Radio, that's exactly what we advocate in our radio broadcast of 1290 WJNO broadcasting in the Palm Beaches. Over the years, we've seen many things occur and change. We've seen the elimination through the Bretton Wood agreement of the gold standard being eliminated and pegging the U.S. dollar to nothing, as it is now a fiat currency. We saw Black Monday with the stock market plummeting at a heart-palpitating pace of 508 points, or 25% of its market cap in one day in 1987. We saw the hedge fund manager Long-Term Capital Management almost bring our financial world to her knees and of course the great helium bubble in the tech industry burst when many people realized a lot of the dot coms were dot duds. Beyond that, the years 2000 through 2010 are largely reminisced upon as being a "lost decade" where the markets lost money in four out of the ten year period, an unfathomable premise in most periods of time. What will the future hold? This I do not know, but what I do know is there have been some distinctions that I've made over the years and certainly observations that tell a different truth about today's American retiree hopefuls and what their future may look like versus the retirement of yesteryear for your parents' generation. The purpose of this book is to tell that story and to give you encouragement and hope that if you establish a blueprint and begin to move towards a new map for a new territory, you have an opportunity to thrive in retirement and not just survive. My commitment is to educate you on some things that will empower you going forward, to potentially give new prosperity for a new generation of retiree hopefuls.
