This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conodonts From the St. Louis Formation (Valmeyeran Series) Of Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri The purpose here is to describe conodonts from rocks presently classified as St. Louis as a requisite to future stratigraphic interpretation. Because many early collections of fossils were made without stratigraphic control and before the definitions of the formations were generally stabilized, faunal lists commonly reflect gross errors. Because the ultimate purpose of the description of the cono donts is stratigraphic, these same difficulties must be avoided here. To do so we have carefully collected samples and described localities so that, regardless of what stratigraphic name is applied, the collecting intervals are known and the collections can be duplicated. In our project, the initial studies were confined to the type area of the St. Louis Limestone (text - fig. 1, Localities 1-4) where both the lower and upper boundaries are present and then were extended to the type area of the Ste. Genevieve Limestone (locality 5) Only after the faunal relation ships were well established in these two areas was the areal extent of the study expanded to southern Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. Book Synopsis Conodonts From the Keokuk, Warsaw, and Salem Formations (Mississippian) Of Illinois (Classic Reprint) by : Carl Buckner Rexroad
Download or read book Conodonts From the Keokuk, Warsaw, and Salem Formations (Mississippian) Of Illinois (Classic Reprint) written by Carl Buckner Rexroad and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conodonts From the Keokuk, Warsaw, and Salem Formations (Mississippian) Of Illinois Collections from sixteen localities, mostly in Illinois but including Iowa and Missouri, have produced a fauna characteristic of the Warsaw and Salem For mations and have indicated the nature of the Keokuk conodont fauna. The conodonts from the Warsaw and Salem represent a single biozone and are here treated as a unit. This fits well with the fact that the two formations are difficult to separate on a lithologic basis (collinson and Swann, 1958) as well as the fact that a third formation, the Sonora, occurs in the same stratigraphic interval and is recognized at Localities 7 and 15 (figs. 1 and 2) Sonora represents an old name resurrected in recent years (collinson, 1964) to include sandstone and sandy dolomite that is locally exposed'in western Illinois and that occurs widely in the subsurface of the state. The Sonora is essentially the same age as the Salem, and the conodont fauna represents what is here informally referred to as the warsaw-salem fauna. Figure 1 shows the collecting localities and figure 2 gives details of the lithologies as well as conodont abundances. Book Synopsis Conodonts From the Glen Dean Formation (Chester) Of the Illinois Basin (Classic Reprint) by : Carl Buckner Rexroad

This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conodonts From the Glen Dean Formation (Chester) Of the Illinois Basin Studies of conodonts from 'the Chester Series in the type area of southwestern Illi nois (rexroad, 1957) showed a diversified fauna from eight formations and indicated that conodonts will be useful in strati graphic investigations of Chester strata. Although the earlier study established-the Chester conodont fauna as a whole, that study was confined to one area and mainly to the shale beds. Thus it did not allow evaluation of limestone faunas, effects of facies changes, nor faunal variations Within; a single formation over a broad area. Such details, along with the more precise delim iting of stratigraphic ranges within the se ries, were the objectives of the present study. The Glen Dean Formation was chosen for study because: (1) it contains relatively abundant conodonts in the type area of the Chester Series; (2) it is well exposed around the margin of the Illinois Basin; (3) in much of its outcrop area it consists of a lower massive limestone unit and an upper unit of mixed lithology, dominantly shale, which would be desirable for facies analysis. Book Synopsis The Middle Devonian Strata of Southern Illinois (Classic Reprint) by : William G. North
Download or read book The Middle Devonian Strata of Southern Illinois (Classic Reprint) written by William G. North and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Middle Devonian Strata of Southern Illinois The Middle Devonian rocks of southern Illinois have been productive of large quantities of oil. They contain both reservoirs and source rocks, and a knowledge of their complex lateral variations is important in the search for new production, in the study of methods for secondary and tertiary production from partially depleted fields, and in the use of the reservoirs for storage of natural gas. Extensive drilling in the Illinois Basin has provided a large amount of geo physical data and many well samples and has made it both possible and timely to gain a greater understanding of Middle Devonian stratigraphy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conodonts From the Chester Series in the Type Area of Southwestern Illinois The presence of conodonts in the Chester rocks of the type area has been known for some time. This study was undertaken to evaluate their use as Chester guide fossils in the expectation that they would prove valuable aids in correlating other strata in North America and Europe with the type section.
