Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Connecticut Constitution At a time when much is said about the defects of our system of government, and the corrupt tendency so manifest in municipal, state, and national affairs is raising doubts as to the future of Republics, this work, which may be called a study in popular government, as affected by the exigencies of modern politics, is undertaken in the hope that it may tend to strengthen the faith of those who believe in government by the people, and that the people themselves can be depended upon to work for right and justice, whenever they fully understand and appreciate the situation. A condition of affairs has arisen which is causing many to declare that the people no longer rule in Connecticut; that the equality of man before the law is a myth; that we have drifted far away from the principles laid down by our forefathers in the constitution of 1639, and that the constitutional conditions existing in the State, tend more toward political corruption than in any State in the Union. It is folly or hypocrisy to say there is no ground for these statements. They are made by loyal and loving sons of the State, who make them with regret and only in the hope that by laying bare the truth a change may become possible. If by the following words a little impetus be given to the cause of good government, and toward restoring Connecticut to her former position of leadership in the march of constitutional progress, the writer will be satisfied. Book excerpt: Local government in the New England states has historically been regarded as a style of government that most closely embodies the spirit of American democracy. Although models of local government vary from one town to the next, the common thread which unites all New England towns is that the people are empowered to choose their own form of government, and in doing so control their own destiny. In this fresh and insightful book, Professor Gary L. Rose, a well known commentator on American politics and native New Englander, introduces readers to local government in Connecticut. Rose takes readers on a journey showcasing the origin of Connecticut towns, the different models of government in existence among the state?s 169 communities, the means by which towns and cities finance public services, the status of party politics in urban, suburban, and rural communities, the creative endeavors currently underway at the local level of government, and the serious challenges facing local media with respect to performing their ?watchdog? role over the affairs of local decision makers. Intended for students, political practitioners, and a general audience, Professor Rose?s book not only fills a void in the literature on local government, but will also serve to inspire those who want to make a positive difference in the political life of their local communities.0.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the People of the State of Connecticut The history of more than two hundred and fifty years of self-government in this Commonwealth affords much to stimulate patriotic devotion to both State and nation. The study of the details of administration of the local government is an important part of the preparation for citizenship. It is desirable that the teacher should have access to Hollister's History of Connecticut, the latest State Register and Manual, Johnston's Connecticut, and Bancroft's History of the United States. A more extensive list of reference books can readily be compiled from the excellent bibliography given by Johnston.
