Book Synopsis Monsters of the Gévaudan by : Jay M. Smith
Download or read book Monsters of the Gévaudan written by Jay M. Smith and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a brilliant, original rendition, Monsters of the Gévaudan revisits a spellbinding French tale that has captivated imaginations for over two hundred years, and offers the definitive explanation of the strange events that underlie this timeless story. In 1764 a peasant girl was killed and partially eaten while tending a flock of sheep. Eventually, over a hundred victims fell prey to a mysterious creature, or creatures, whose cunning and deadly efficiency terrorized the region and mesmerized Europe. The fearsome aggressor quickly took on mythic status, and the beast of the Gévaudan passed into French folklore. What species was this killer, why did it decapitate so many of its victims, and why did it prefer the flesh of women and children? Why did contemporaries assume that the beast was anything but a wolf, or a pack of wolves, as authorities eventually claimed, and why is the tale so often ignored in histories of the ancien régime? Smith finds the answer to these last two questions in an accident of timing. The beast was bound to be perceived as strange and anomalous because its ravages coincided with the emergence of modernity itself. Expertly situated within the social, intellectual, cultural, and political currents of French life in the 1760s, Monsters of the Gévaudan will engage a wide range of readers with both its recasting of the beast narrative and its compelling insights into the allure of the monstrous in historical memory.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Destroy the Copy – Plaster Cast Collections in the 19th–20th Centuries by : Annetta Alexandridis
Download or read book Destroy the Copy – Plaster Cast Collections in the 19th–20th Centuries written by Annetta Alexandridis and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on two international conferences held at Cornell University and the Freie Universität of Berlin in 2010 and 2015, this volume is the first ever to explicitly address the destruction of plaster cast collections of ancient Mediterranean and Western sculpture. Focusing on Europe, the Americas, and Japan, art historians, archaeologists and a literary scholar discuss how different museum and academic traditions – national as well as disciplinary –, notions of value and authenticity, or colonialism impacted the fate of collections. The texts offer detailed documentation of degrees of destruction by spectacular acts of defacement, demolition, discarding, or neglect. They also shed light on the accompanying discourses regarding aesthetic ideals, political ideologies, educational and scholarly practices, or race. With destruction being understood as a critical part of reception, the histories of cast collections defy the traditional, homogenous narrative of rise and decline. Their diverse histories provide critical evidence for rethinking the use and display of plaster cast collections in the contemporary moment.

This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of Viaggiatori “Curatele” series seeks to recreate some scientific dialogues, namely meetings, exchanges and acquisition of theoretical and practical scientific knowledge, thus linking the cultural, historical and geographical context of America, Asia, Europe and Mediterranean Sea between the 16th and the 20th century. More specifically, the main objective is to consider the role of travellers as passeurs, as “intermediaries” for building and allowing the circulation of knowhow and the practical and theoretical knowledge from one continent to another.

Book Synopsis Le Cercle des lettres de l’alphabet Dā’irat al-aḥruf al-abjadiyya by : Cécile Bonmariage
Download or read book Le Cercle des lettres de l’alphabet Dā’irat al-aḥruf al-abjadiyya written by Cécile Bonmariage and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Kitāb dā’irat al-aḥruf al-abjadiyya is a composite treatise of letter magic attributed to Hermes. The edition and annotated translation of the Arabic text are accompanied by an explanation of the theoretical principles underlying the procedures described in the recipes, and a discussion of the entities, objects and ingredients used. These include names of the angels to be summoned, types of incenses and inks to be used, sketches and images to be drawn, etc. This is one of the first critical editions and translations of a full-length text of practical magic containing recipes pertaining to ‘ilm al-ḥurūf (the science of letters). The book is addressed to Arabists and to any non-Arabist interested in the tradition of magic.
