Book excerpt: Industrial Action (1980) examines in a comparative analysis the principal elements involved in industrial action – strikes, work-to-rule, go-slows etc – in four key industries in Australia – construction, shipbuilding, the waterfront and telecommunications. The individual case studies are placed within a theoretical and an international perspective, and conclusions are drawn which point up many common threads running through industrial relations in widely differing industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades, urban redevelopment of waterfront areas has accelerated. The historical significance of these areas, coupled with their unique visual amenities, have resulted in major renewal efforts in many cities. The competition between the waterway navigation industry and redevelopment interests for scarce waterfront land has resulted in conflicts. Congestion along the access routes to existing ports and terminals has affected the ability to move goods efficiently to and from the waterfront. This report presents the results of an investigation into waterfront redevelopment issues and conflicts that arise related to landside access to ports and terminals. Guidelines are presented that address some of the problems that arise during the development of waterfront development projects and in planning adequate transportation access. These guidelines focus on developing mechanisms to improve communication among the individuals and agencies involved it the planning process. They include such activities as information dissemination and the establishment of committees with broad representation. Application of these guidelines by water transportation interests, urban planners, transportation engineers, and community officials may alleviate some of the conflicts and enhance the planning process. The report concludes with recommendations for actions to be taken to insure that the results of this investigation are considered for implementation by waterway navigation interests and in the planning process.

Book excerpt: Workers who loaded and unloaded ships have formed a distinctive occupational group over the past two centuries. As trade expanded so the numbers of dock labourers increased and became concentrated in the major ports of the world. This ambitious two-volume project goes beyond existing individual studies of dock workers to develop a genuinely comparative international perspective over a long historical period. Volume 1 contains studies of 22 major ports worldwide. Built around an agreed framework of issues, these 'port studies' examine the type of workers who dominated dock labour, their race, class and ethnicity, the working conditions of dockers and the role of government as employer, arbitrator and supporter. The studies also detail how dockers organized their labour, patterns of strike action and involvement in political organizations. The structure of the port city is also outlined and descriptions given of the waterside environment. These areas of investigation form the basis for a series of 11 thematic studies which comprise Volume 2. Drawing on the information provided in the port studies, these essays identify important aspects and recurring themes, and explain how and why particular cases diverge from the rest. The final chapter of the book synthesizes the various approaches taken to offer a model which suggests several configurations of dock labour and presents suggestions for future research. This major scholarly achievement represents the most sustained attempt to date to provide a comparative international history of dock labour. An annotated bibliography completes this essential reference work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To meet the challenges of globalization, unions must improve their understanding of the changing nature of corporate ownership structures and practices, and they must develop alliances and strategies appropriate to the new environment. Global Unions includes original research from scholars around the world on the range of innovative strategies that unions use to adapt to different circumstances, industries, countries, and corporations in taking on the challenge of mounting cross-border campaigns against global firms. This collection emerges from a landmark conference where unionists, academics, and representatives of nongovernmental organizations from the Global South and the Global North met to devise strategies for labor to use when confronting the most powerful corporations such as Wal-Mart and Exxon Mobil. The workplaces discussed here include agriculture (bananas), maritime labor (dock workers), manufacturing (apparel, automobiles, medical supplies), food processing, and services (school bus drivers). Kate Bronfenbrenner's introduction sets the stage, followed by contributions describing specific examples from Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Bronfenbrenner's conclusion focuses on the key lessons for strengthening union power in relation to global capital.

Book excerpt: As one of Europe's great industrial and revolutionary centres Barcelona has been in need of a detailed social and cultural history, yet there is actually a paucity of detailed research. This book redresses the balance. Focusing on the entire twentieth century, it allows for the emergence of long-term trends, and deals with both classic and newer themes of labour history. This novel and authoritative work will interest not only those working on Spain, but all scholars and students of comparative history.
