This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between race (African American and European American, females), congruence and life goals/desires (fundamental goals/motivation sensitivities). In summary, the Self-Directed Search was used to obtain the Holland-personality-types of the participants. Each participant's Holland-environment-code was derived from her college major. The participants' Holland-personality-code and the Holland-environment-code were then used to define individuals (using a first-letter or C-index definition) as congruent or incongruent. Three MANOVAs were conducted with race and congruence as independent variables, and the scales of the Reiss Profile of Fundamental Goals and Motivation Sensitivities as dependent variables. Three ANOVAs were also used to compare African American and European American female college students, as well as congruent and incongruent groups, on total career decision-making self-efficacy (as measured by the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy scale-Short Form). In addition, two exploratory MANOVA analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between the independent variables of race and career decision-making self-efficacy, and the dependent variables of fundamental goals/motivation sensitivities on the Reiss. In general, African American and European American, female college students were found to differ on some of the Reiss scales, while congruent and incongruent individuals did not tend to differ. Results were generally similar, regardless of whether the first-letter or C-index was used to define congruence. Also, African American and European American female college students, as well as congruent and incongruent groups, did not differ in their levels of career decision-making self-efficacy. Finally, Career decision-making self-efficacy was associated with differences in expressed needs/desires and life goals as measured by the Reiss. Results generally suggest that factors such as race and self-efficacy, may impact the fundamental goals/motivation sensitivities expressed by these college students.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Bangladesh there are a few administrative positions available to women as their educational attainment is low compared to other countries (Mahtab, 2007). Thus, the purpose of the study is to determine career self-efficacy and leadership practices of female adolescents at St. Mary's Girls' High School, Toomiliah, Bangladesh as a basis for developing a career and leadership program. The researcher utilized a descriptive correlational design for this purpose. Three standardized tests were administered using A) Career decision self Efficacy short form by Taylor and Betz (2006), B) Leadership Practices Inventory (self- rating version) by James M. Kouzes and Berry Z. Posner (2003), and C) Seven Habits Profile (SHP) by Steven Covey(2003). The data were analyzed and interpreted using Mean, Standard deviation, F-test and Product- Moment Coefficient of Correlation. Findings indicated that students had moderate level of confidence in career decision-making tasks that need to increase in more significant rates. Regarding leadership, they exhibited certain leadership qualities but needed improvement in Kouzes and Posner's (2003) Five Exemplary leadership practices and Covey's (2003) Seven Habits Profile. Based from the findings, a Career and Leadership Program was developed for the female students of St. Mary's Girls' High School, Toomiliah, Bangladesh to help them develop career self-efficacy and leadership practices.

Book Synopsis The Five-factor Model and Career Self-efficacy by : Robert Owen Hartman
Download or read book The Five-factor Model and Career Self-efficacy written by Robert Owen Hartman and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Researchers have begun to investigate connections between the Five-Factor Model of personality and Social Cognitive Career Theory, but the data are limited and therefore inconclusive. To replicate and extend previous work, this dissertation explores empirical relationships between the Big Five personality factors (the NEO Five-Factor Inventory) and 24 distinct domains of career-related self-efficacy (the Expanded Skills Confidence Inventory and the Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form). Findings suggest that Conscientiousness and Extraversion correlate positively with a broad range of self-efficacy domains, while Neuroticism displays a significant negative relationship with nearly all forms of career self-efficacy. In addition, Openness to Experience correlates with self-efficacy for creative and intellectual pursuits, while Agreeableness shows no significant relationship with career self-efficacy variables. Findings are evaluated in light of recent empirical and theoretical developments relating to the integration of trait and social-cognitive perspectives.

Book Synopsis Career Decision Learning Experiences by : Denise H. Bike
Download or read book Career Decision Learning Experiences written by Denise H. Bike and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, national economies are struggling, and the youth unemployment rate (ages 16 to 24) is 19% (BLS, 2010a). Young adults struggle with career decisions, often halting the process or making inaccurate or ineffective decisions (Gati, Krausz, & Osipow, 1996). With a psychometrically sound instrument based on established theory, psychologists and vocational specialists can support today's youth through research and interventions. The present study consisted of the development and examination of the factor structure of the Career Decision Learning Experiences scale (CDLE) based on Bandura's (1977) Social Cognitive Theory and on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT; Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994). A 5-factor model was hypothesized based on the learning experiences proposed by Bandura and included in SCCT (social persuasion, vicarious learning, mastery experiences, negative emotional arousal, and positive emotional arousal). Positive emotional arousal is the author's innovation, based on Fredrickson's (2001) Broaden and Build Theory of Positive Emotion, which posits that positive emotion contributes uniquely to experiences, beyond negative emotion (or its absence). Analyses on alternate forms of the 125-item CDLE included exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with a sample of 464 college students and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with an independent sample of 465 college students. Additionally, 291 of the students participated in a retest. The hypothesized 5-factor structure was supported by multiple criteria in EFA and a final 40-item, 5-factor solution was confirmed by CFA. Internal consistency estimates of the CDLE and its scales were high, and two- to four-week test-retest reliability scores were strong. Positive emotional arousal resulted in a unique factor. Additionally, social persuasion emerged as the most influential factor. Future research and clinical directions are discussed.
Book Synopsis Exploring Career Decision-making Self-efficacy, Career Maturity Attitudes, and Racial Identity Attitudes of College Students of Color by : Jacob N. Sneva
Download or read book Exploring Career Decision-making Self-efficacy, Career Maturity Attitudes, and Racial Identity Attitudes of College Students of Color written by Jacob N. Sneva and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American higher education is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse and researchers have suggested that more attention should be given to better understanding the career development of college students of color. Although there is substantial research on career development and the career decision-making process, studies have overwhelmingly primarily used data collected from White participants. Thus, little research has been done on the career development of people of color and specifically, college students of color. The primary focus of this study was to explore relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and racial identity attitudes of college students of color. In addition, the study explored relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and various demographic and life experience variables.^A sample of 164 college students of color attending five institutions of higher education in the Western New York area was used for this study. A survey packet consisting of four separate self-report instruments was completed by each participant. This study employed a multiple correlation and regression survey research design which was used to examine relationships between variables. This study generated a number of important findings. First, strong relationships where found between career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes for this sample. Second, career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes were related both positively and negatively, depending upon participants' current racial identity status, to participants' racial identity attitudes.^Third, participants' age, year in college, academic major, mother's educational level, and family income were predictors of their confidence in their ability to make a career choice that would meet their preferred lifestyle. Lastly, none of the remaining demographic variables were related to either career development construct. This study also explored the implications of the findings on career counseling with students of color, student affairs and academic advising practice, and higher education policy. Overall, this study provides new and relevant information regarding the career and racial identity development of college students of color, a very limited body of scholarly literature.
Book Synopsis A Review of the Construct and Concurrent Validity of the Career Decision-making Self-efficacy Scale Adapted by : Frances Diane Schoon
Download or read book A Review of the Construct and Concurrent Validity of the Career Decision-making Self-efficacy Scale Adapted written by Frances Diane Schoon and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon Bandura's (1977) concept of self-efficacy expectations, Taylor and Betz (1983) constructed the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale (CDMSE) to measure self-efficacy expectations related to 50 career decision-making tasks. They hypothesized that individuals with low self-efficacy would avoid tasks necessary to make career decisions and those with high self-efficacy would approach tasks. The current study was designed to examine the construct and concurrent validity of the CDMSE Scale (Taylor & Betz, 1983) adapted to include the variable salience. One purpose of the study was to evaluate the factor structure of the scale. It had previously failed to differentiate between the five career choice competencies (cited in Crites, 1978) upon which its subscales were based. The second purpose was to examine the ability of the items to differentiate between students who were decided or undecided on a major, and those who sought career planning assistance or did not. A sample of 140 freshmen and sophomore university students were administered the CDMSE scale adapted, and demographic questionnaires that included questions related to their degree of decidedness on a major. Factor analysis failed to confirm the five postulated subscales. Results confirmed previous research findings that higher levels of CDMSE are negatively related to vocational indecision, and found the CDMSE scale total and individual items are able to differentiate between decided and undecided students. Perceived salience of the tasks was not found to be significant. These findings suggest that the CDMSE scale is a valid instrument to use in assessment of vocational indecision. It can also provide the basis for evaluating and planning specific career interventions.
Book Synopsis Psychometric Properties of the General Self-Efficacy Scale in a Colombian Sample by : Fernando Juárez
Download or read book Psychometric Properties of the General Self-Efficacy Scale in a Colombian Sample written by Fernando Juárez and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The self-efficacy construct has been studied from two different viewpoints. Firstly, in a specific manner, as it was originally proposed and secondly, in a generalized way, defined as an optimistic self-belief of personal capability to cope efficiently and competently with a variety of situations. In order to measure this construct at the broadest level the General Self Efficacy Scale (GSE) was designed and adapted to Spanish in Costa Rica. This study aimed at validating the scale in a Colombian sample composed of college students. Participants were also administered the Situational Personality Questionnaire (named in Spanish as Cuestionario de Personalidad Situacional, CPS) and its factors have, theoretically speaking, a certain relationship with the studied construct. According to the results, the GSE showed a high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha value of .83). Convergent and discriminant validity of this instrument were evaluated through the CPS and positive correlations were obtained with efficacy, confidence, self-concept and emotional stability while negative correlations were obtained with anxiety. Through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, the unidimensional structure of the scale was validated.
