Book excerpt: Starting in the early 1950's, Alberto Calderon, Antoni Zygmund, and their students developed a program in harmonic analysis with far-reaching consequences. The title of these proceedings reflects this broad reach. This book came out of a DePaul University conference honoring Stephen Vagi upon his retirement in 2002. Vagi was a student of Calderon in the 1960's, when Calderon and Zygmund were at their peak. Two authors, Kenig and Gatto, were students of Calderon; one, Muckenhoupt, was a student of Zygmund. Two others studied under Zygmund's student Elias Stein. The remaining authors all have close connections with the Calderon-Zygmund school of analysis. This book should interest specialists in harmonic analysis and those curious to see it applied to partial differential equations and ergodic theory. In the first article, Adam Koranyi summarizes Vagi's work. Four additional articles cover various recent developments in harmonic analysis: Eduardo Gatto studies spaces with doubling and non-doubling measures; Cora Sadosky, product spaces; Benjamin Muckenhoupt, Laguerre expansions; and Roger Jones, singular integrals. Charles Fefferman and Carlos Kenig present applications to partial differential equations and Stephen Wainger gives an application to ergodic theory. The final article records some interesting open questions from a problem session that concluded the conference.

All the needed information is contained in a usual first-year graduate course on analysis. These prerequisites are modest but essential. To be sure there is a big gap between learning the Banach-Steinhaus theorem, for example, and applying it to a real problem. Filling that gap is one of the objectives of this book. It is a natural objective, because integration theory and functional analysis to a great extent developed in response to the problems of Fourier series! The exposition has been condensed somewhat by relegating proofs of some technical points to the problem sets. Other problems give results that are needed in subsequent sections; and many problems simply present interesting results of the subject that are not otherwise covered. Problems range in difficulty from very simple to very hard. The system of numeration is simple: Sec. 3. 2 is the second section of Chapter 3. The second section of the current chapter is Sec. 2. Formula (3. 2) is the second formula of Sec. 3, of the current chapter unless otherwise mentioned. With pleasure I record the debt to my notes from a course on Real Variables given by R. Book excerpt: This book chronicles Donald Burkholder's thirty-five year study of martingales and its consequences. Here are some of the highlights. Pioneering work by Burkholder and Donald Austin on the discrete time martingale square function led to Burkholder and Richard Gundy's proof of inequalities comparing the quadratic variations and maximal functions of continuous martingales, inequalities which are now indispensable tools for stochastic analysis. Part of their proof showed how novel distributional inequalities between the maximal function and quadratic variation lead to inequalities for certain integrals of functions of these operators. The argument used in their proof applies widely and is now called the Burkholder-Gundy good lambda method. This uncomplicated and yet extremely elegant technique, which does not involve randomness, has become important in many parts of mathematics. The continuous martingale inequalities were then used by Burkholder, Gundy, and Silverstein to prove the converse of an old and celebrated theorem of Hardy and Littlewood. This paper transformed the theory of Hardy spaces of analytic functions in the unit disc and extended and completed classical results of Marcinkiewicz concerning norms of conjugate functions and Hilbert transforms. While some connections between probability and analytic and harmonic functions had previously been known, this single paper persuaded many analysts to learn probability. These papers together with Burkholder's study of martingale transforms led to major advances in Banach spaces. A simple geometric condition given by Burkholder was shown by Burkholder, Terry McConnell, and Jean Bourgain to characterize those Banach spaces for which the analog of the Hilbert transform retains important properties of the classical Hilbert transform. Techniques involved in Burkholder's usually successful pursuit of best constants in martingale inequalities have become central to extensive recent research into two well- known open problems, one involving the two dimensional Hilbert transform and its connection to quasiconformal mappings and the other a conjecture in the calculus of variations concerning rank-one convex and quasiconvex functions. This book includes reprints of many of Burkholder's papers, together with two commentaries on his work and its continuing impact.
