In 2011, after moving to South Carolina, Paul Waring, a retired Connecticut state trooper, and his wife start their new life. Soon after moving, Paul makes a startling discovery. He discovers the remains of a long-forgotten Confederate soldier, along with several Civil War artifacts. Those artifacts include two glass bottles containing several clues he must decipher. Paul determines that one clue concerns the whereabouts of the lost Confederate treasury; a treasury largely comprised of gold and silver coins. He later discovers much of this gold was stolen from the United States government at the outbreak of the Civil War.

Book excerpt: On the night of April 2/3, 1865, a train left Richmond carrying the gold and silver from the Confederate Treasury, perhaps worth $370,000, as well as $450,000 in gold and silver from a group of Richmond banks. The train roughly followed the escape route of Jefferson Davis and his cabinet - sometimes ahead of Davis, and sometimes behind. By the time the treasure cache reached Washington, Georgia, the Confederate Treasury was depleted. We'll examine in some detail what happened to the gold and silver along the way. The Richmond bank specie fared better up to that point, arriving more or less intact. But this would change radically on May 24, 1865 when Confederate parolees hijacked the Richmond bank gold as it was being shipped from Washington, GA back to Richmond. While some of that gold was recovered, there is still about $140,000 (1865 dollars) missing. This book will tell the tale of the last days of the Confederate Treasury, and the lost gold and silver of the Richmond Banks. The book contains 44 illustrations.

The Confederacy still possessed a large store of gold and silver coin, but it disappeared in the chaos of the time. What became of the Confederate gold? No living soul is certain. In his exciting and moving novel, Thomas Moore imagines what might happen if the treasure reappeared through the discovery of a long-lost coded message. The Hunt for Confederate Gold is a suspenseful thriller that dramatizes the Confederate gold as a source of confrontation between a shadowy Southern group still seeking independence and a team of rogue Government agents determined to recover it at all costsincluding breaking the law. This exciting foray into one of Americas most tantalizing mysteries is also a love story, a cautionary political tale, and tour de force of a little-known chapter of the Civil War.

Book excerpt: On April 2nd 1865, with the Confederate states in turmoil, a train carrying the separate monies of both the Confederate Treasury and the Virginia banks left Richmond. Following a hazardous flight south, the train was eventually split, allowing the bank money to return to Richmond. On May 24th, the wagon train carrying this money north was hijacked near Washington, Georgia. While some of the stolen money was recovered, much remains missing to this day. Rumors abound as to where the thieves hid their loot. Some claim it was dumped in that portion of the Savannah River, which is now part of Thurmond Lake. There have been many attempts to find it with no success although occasional claims of finding a gold bar or a few coins have been made. Others suggest the money is hidden in Crawfordville at the home of then Vice President Alexander Stephens but again no evidence has been found. Confederate Gold deftly blends fact and fiction into an historical mystery. The novel is woven around past realities and encompasses the many aspects of human strengths: loyalty, patience and fortitude offset by human frailties: greed, lust and deceit. Adventure and suspense are combined against a backdrop of real and fictional characters. In the end the novel suggests an answer to the whereabouts of that missing treasure. If it is not in the Savannah River or at the home of Vice President Alexander Stephens, it could well be where Singleton states it to be.

Richards gives us an authoritative and revealing portrait of an overlooked harbinger of the terrible battle that was to come. When gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848, Americans of all stripes saw the potential for both wealth and power. Among the more calculating were Southern slave owners. By making California a slave state, they could increase the value of their slaves—by 50 percent at least, and maybe much more. They could also gain additional influence in Congress and expand Southern economic clout, abetted by a new transcontinental railroad that would run through the South. Yet, despite their machinations, California entered the union as a free state. Disillusioned Southerners would agitate for even more slave territory, leading to the Kansas-Nebraska Act and, ultimately, to the Civil War itself.

Book excerpt: In 1860, during their first attempt to create the Golden Circle, several thousand Knights assembled in southern Texas to "colonize" the northern Mexico. Due to insufficient resources and organizational shortfalls, however, that filibuster failed. Later, the Knights shifted their focus and began pushing for disunion, spearheading prosecession rallies, and intimidating Unionists in the South. They appointed regional military commanders from the ranks of the South's major political and military figures, including men such as Elkanah Greer of Texas, Paul J. Semmes of Georgia, Robert C. Tyler of Maryland, and Virginius D. Groner of Virginia. Followers also established allies with the South's rabidly prosecession "fire-eaters," which included individuals such as Barnwell Rhett, Louis Wigfall, Henry Wise, and William Yancy.

Although the ship was rumored to be carrying newly minted gold coins, no trace of the wreck and not even a single piece of Confederate gold is ever found. Fast forward to 1973. Mike is prepared for another routine summer in Pensacola with his marine biologist father. But plans suddenly change and Mike finds himself on Shipwreck Island—right near the site where the Skink went down. Mike and his new friend Kyle are intrigued by a salvage ship anchored just offshore. Some say it was brought in by fortune hunters, but when the boys scale a fence at the fort on the island, they realize that the fortune hunters may be looking in the wrong place. There in the sand-covered floor of an abandoned chamber they spot something shiny: an old double-eagle gold coin. Mike and Kyle agree to keep their discovery a secret and start their own investigation into the shipwreck and the missing gold. Award-winning author Sneed B. Book Synopsis Blood and Treasure by : Donald S. Frazier

Download or read book Blood and Treasure written by Donald S. Frazier and published by . This book was released on 2009-02-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades before the Civil War, Southern writers and warriors had been urging the occupation and development of the American Southwest. When the rift between North and South had been finalized in secession, the Confederacy moved to extend their traditions to the west-a long-sought goal that had been frustrated by northern states. It was a common sentiment among Southerners and especially Texans that Mexico must be rescued from indolent inhabitants and granted the benefits of American civilization. Blood and Treasure, written in a readable narrative style that belies the rigorous research behind it, tells the story of the Confederacy's ambitious plan to extend a Confederate empire across the continent. Led by Lieutenant Colonel John R. Baylor, later a governor of Arizona, and General H. H. Sibley, Texan soldiers trekked from San Antonio to Fort Bliss in El Paso, then north along the Rio Grande to Santa Fe. Fighting both Apaches and Federal troops, the half-trained, undisciplined army met success at the Battle of Val Verde and defeat at the Battle of Apache Canyon. Finally, the Texans won the Battle of Glorieta Pass, only to lose their supply train--and eventually the campaign. Pursued and dispirited, the Confederates abandoned their dream of empire and retreated to El Paso and San Antonio. Frazier has made use of previously untapped primary sources, allowing him to present new interpretations of the famous Civil War battles in the Southwest. Using narratives of veterans of the campaign and official Confederate and Union documents, the author explains how this seemingly far-fetched fantasy of building a Confederate empire was an essential part of the Confederate strategy. Military historians will be challenged to modify traditional views of Confederate imperial ambitions. Generalists will be drawn into the fascinating saga of the soldiers' fears, despair, and struggles to survive.
