Book Synopsis Conéctate: Introductory Spanish by : Grant Goodall
Download or read book Conéctate: Introductory Spanish written by Grant Goodall and published by McGraw-Hill Education. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of Introductory Spanish learn best when they are connecting—with authentic culture, with each other as a community, and with the language as used in real-world settings. Conéctate sparks the curiosity that builds these connections as students drive toward communicative and cultural confidence and proficiency. The Conéctate program’s distinctive approach is built around the following principles. Focused approach: Conéctate concentrates on what Introductory Spanish students can reasonably be expected to learn, allowing for sustained engagement with the material that respects the natural process of language acquisition. An intentional focus, first on meaning and then on form, puts in action the best practices of second language pedagogy. Plus, Conéctate’s reduced grammar scope leaves more time for the systematic review and recycling of vocabulary and grammar required for students to achieve mastery of first-year skills. Fortifying this process at every turn is LearnSmartTM, a powerful, super-adaptive learning program that guides students on an individualized path toward mastery of all the vocabulary and grammar in Conéctate. Active learning: Conéctate gives students the opportunity to explore language and culture through interactive activities that keep them focused and engaged. Vocabulary and grammar in Conéctate are taught using an active learning approach, nudging students to discover new vocabulary and language rules through a carefully balanced mix of inductive and explicit presentations and hands-on learning. Students are similarly asked to take an active role in an immersive online game, Practice Spanish: Study Abroad, designed around a study abroad experience in which they leverage their language and cultural skills to accomplish tasks and solve problems in various real-world scenarios. Integration of culture: Building on the active learning theme, students develop and apply critical thinking skills as they draw personal conclusions about the rich culture presented throughout Conéctate. Culture is embedded within the language activities themselves, included in notes that expand on the activity at hand, and seen through the integrated video that forms the basis for many activities in each chapter of the text. This authentic, unscripted video introduces students to useful chunks of language, real-world Spanish, and a wide range of topics related to cultural themes. Conéctate’s stunning video was shot in Spain, Panama, Miami, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Mexico, and exposes students to a wide variety of people in each country who discuss topics that are familiar and engaging to students. Mobile Tools for Digital Success: The digital tools available in the Connect Spanish platform with Conéctate also successfully promote student progress by providing extensive opportunities to practice and hone their developing skills. These learning opportunities include online communicative activities, instant feedback, peerediting, sophisticated reporting, an immersive game, and an interactive eBook with embedded video and audio. The mobile-friendly platform allows students to engage in the course material anytime and everywhere. Connect is the only integrated learning system that empowers students by continuously adapting to deliver precisely what they need, when they need it, and how they need it, so that your class time is more engaging and effective. *Connect Spanish, including but not limited to the workbook/lab manual, LearnSmart, Practice Spanish: Study Abroad, the video program, and chat tools, is sold separately and does not come automatically with the purchase of the textbook.

Book Synopsis Parallel Structures in Syntax by : Grant Goodall
Download or read book Parallel Structures in Syntax written by Grant Goodall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a radical revision in the definition of phrase markers, the fundamental object in the generative theory of syntax. Phrase markers have traditionally been defined in such a way that each node in the phrase marker must satisfy a relation of either dominance or precedence with every other node. Grant Goodall argues convincingly that the dominance and precedence requirement should be dropped. The argument is lucidly articulated and is supported by a comprehensive description and analysis of of coordination in English and of causative and restructuring constructions in the Romance languages. Parallel Structures in Syntax is a significant and thoughtful contribution to syntactic theory, and arguably provides the simplest and most elegant account available of many of the complex phenomena observed in coordination, causatives, and restructuring. It will interest not only theoretical linguists, but also computational linguists and cognitive scientists.
Book Synopsis A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish by : John Butt
Download or read book A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish written by John Butt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (abridged and revised) This reference grammar offers intermediate and advanced students a reason ably comprehensive guide to the morphology and syntax of educated speech and plain prose in Spain and Latin America at the end of the twentieth century. Spanish is the main, usually the sole official language of twenty-one countries,} and it is set fair to overtake English by the year 2000 in numbers 2 of native speakers. This vast geographical and political diversity ensures that Spanish is a good deal less unified than French, German or even English, the latter more or less internationally standardized according to either American or British norms. Until the 1960s, the criteria of internationally correct Spanish were dictated by the Real Academia Espanola, but the prestige of this institution has now sunk so low that its most solemn decrees are hardly taken seriously - witness the fate of the spelling reforms listed in the Nuevas normas de prosodia y ortograjia, which were supposed to come into force in all Spanish-speaking countries in 1959 and, nearly forty years later, are still selectively ignored by publishers and literate persons everywhere. The fact is that in Spanish 'correctness' is nowadays decided, as it is in all living languages, by the consensus of native speakers; but consensus about linguistic usage is obviously difficult to achieve between more than twenty independent, widely scattered and sometimes mutually hostile countries. Peninsular Spanish is itself in flux.

Book Synopsis A Life on Paper by : Georges-Olivier Chateaureynaud
Download or read book A Life on Paper written by Georges-Olivier Chateaureynaud and published by Small Beer Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated career of Georges-Olivier Châteaureynaud is well known to readers of French literature. This comprehensive collection—the first to be translated into English—introduces a distinct and dynamic voice to the Anglophone world. In many ways, Châteaureynaud is France’s own Kurt Vonnegut, and his stories are as familiar as they are fantastic. A Life on Paper presents characters who struggle to communicate across the boundaries of the living and the dead, the past and the present, the real and the more-than-real. A young husband struggles with self-doubt and an ungainly set of angel wings in “Icarus Saved from the Skies,” even as his wife encourages him to embrace his transformation. In the title story, a father’s obsession with his daughter leads him to keep her life captured in 93,284 unchanging photographs. While Châteaureynaud’s stories examine the diffidence and cruelty we are sometimes capable of, they also highlight the humanity in the strangest of us and our deep appreciation for the mysterious. Georges-Olivier Châteaureynaud is the author of eight novels and almost one hundred short stories, and he is a recipient of the prestigious Prix Renaudot and the Bourse Goncourt de la nouvelle. His work has been translated into twelve languages. Edward Gauvin has published Châteaureynaud’s work in AGNI Online, Conjunctions, Words Without Borders, The Café Irreal, and The Brooklyn Rail. The recipient of a residency from the Banff International Literary Translation Centre, he translates graphic novels for Tokyopop, First Second Books, and Archaia Studios Press.

Book Synopsis Greenhouse Governance by : Barry G. Rabe
Download or read book Greenhouse Governance written by Barry G. Rabe and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public deliberation over climate change has traditionally been dominated by the natural and physical sciences. Is the planet warming? To what degree, and is mankind responsible? How big a problem is this, really? But concurrent with these debates is the question of what should be done. Indeed, what can be done? Issues of governance, including the political feasibility of certain policies and their capacity for implementation, have received short shrift in the conversation. But they absolutely must be addressed as we respond to this unprecedented challenge. Greenhouse Governance brings a much-needed public policy mindset to discussion of climate change in America. Greenhouse Governance features a number of America's preeminent public policy scholars, examining some aspect of governance and climate change. They analyze the state and influence of American public opinion on climate change as well as federalism and intergovernmental relations, which prove especially important since state and local governments have taken a more active role than originally expected. Specific policy issues examined include renewable electricity standards, mandating greater vehicle fuel economy, the "adaptation vs. mitigation" debate, emissions trading, and carbon taxes. The contributors do consider the scientific and economic questions of climate policy but place special emphasis on political and managerial issues. They analyze the role of key American government institutions including the courts, Congress, and regulatory agencies. The final two chapters put the discussion into an international context, looking at climate governance challenges in North America, relations with the European Union, and possible models for international governance. Contributors include Christopher Borick, Muhlenberg College; Martha Derthick, University of Virginia; Kirsten Engel, University of Arizona; Marc Landy, Boston College; Pietro Nivola, Brookings Institution; P

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Basics of Media Writing: A Strategic Approach helps readers develop the essential writing skills and professional habits needed to succeed in 21st-century media careers. This research-driven, strategy-based media writing textbook digs deeply into how media professionals think and write in journalism, public relations, advertising, and other forms of strategic communication. Authors Scott A. Kuehn and Andrew Lingwall have created two comprehensive writing models to help students overcome their problems in finding and developing story topics by giving them “starting points” to begin writing. The Professional Strategy Triangle model shows students how to think critically about the audience, the situation, and the message before starting a news story or persuasive piece and the FAJA four-point model asks students a series of questions about their story type (Fact, Analysis, Judgment, or Action) to guide them to the right angle or organizational structure for their message. Rooted in classical rhetorical methods, this step-by-step technique enables readers to strategically approach each writing task, no matter the format.
