Book excerpt: Pursuant to Title V of Public Law 102-25, the Department of Defense has prepared this Interim Report on the Conduct of the Persian Gulf Conflict. This report reflects many of the preliminary impressions formed by the Department since the cessation of hostilities. However, much of the technical information needed for sound analysis is still being collected. The final report of the Commander-in-Chief of Central Command has not yet been completed. Nonetheless, it is possible to describe some of the key events that occurred in this conflict and to identify preliminary some lessons to be learned. The Department of Defense will continue to study the lessons of the war and will submit a final Report in accordance with Title V in January 1992.

A proper understanding of the conduct of these military operations - the achievements and the shortcomings - is an important and continuing task of the Department of Defense as we look to the future. This report to Congress reflects many of the preliminary impressions formed by the Department since the cessation of hostilities.

Book excerpt: Ideal for high school and college-level readers as well as students attending military academies and general audiences, this encyclopedia covers the details of the Persian Gulf War as well as the long-term consequences and historical lessons learned from this important 20th-century conflict. This encyclopedia provides a rich historical account of the Persian Gulf War, examining the conflict from a holistic perspective that addresses the details of the military operations as well as the social, political, economic, and cultural aspects of the war. The alphabetically arranged entries chart the events of the war, provide cross references and sources for additional study, and identify the most important individuals and groups associated with the conflict. In addition, it includes primary source documents that will provide readers with valuable insights and foster their critical thinking and historical reasoning skills. The Persian Gulf War served as the first live-combat test of much of the United States' then-new high-tech weaponry. The war also held many lessons about the play of national interests, the process of coalition building, the need for effective communication and coordination, and the role of individuals in shaping history. This book addresses all key battles, the nations involved, strategies employed by both sides, weapon systems used, the role of the media, the role played by women, and environmental and medical issues associated with the conflict.

Book excerpt: This is the Chapters I thru VIII of the Final report to Congress - April 1992 The Persian Gulf War was the first major conflict following the end of the Cold War. The victory was a triumph of Coalition strategy, of international cooperation, of technology, and of people. It reflected leadership, patience, and courage at the highest levels and in the field. Under adverse and hazardous conditions far from home, our airmen, soldiers, sailors, and marines once again played the leading role in reversing a dangerous threat to a critical region of the world and to our national interests. Their skill and sacrifice lie at the heart of this important triumph over aggression in the early post-Cold War era. Why buy a book you can download for free? We print this book so you don't have to. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, the Persian Gulf War captured the attention of the world as the first test of the U.S. Army since the Vietnam War and the first large-scale armor engagement since World War II. Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait and his subsequent ouster by the U.S.-led coalition are keys to understanding today's situation in the Middle East. The coalition partnerships cemented in that initial operation and in the regional peacekeeping operations that followed provided the basis for a growing series of multinational efforts that have characterized the post-Cold War environment. Moreover, the growing interoperability of U.S. air, sea, and land forces coupled with the extensive employment of more sophisticated weapons first showcased in Desert Storm have become the hallmark of American military operations and the standard that other nations strive to meet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conduct of the Persian Gulf War should be read by every U.S. military officer because it has certainly been read by the Chinese military. In 2013, the Academy of Military Sciences of the People''s Liberation Army of China issued a revised edition of its "The Science of Military Strategy" (SMS). A Chinese-language copy was obtained by Secrecy News and we translated it to English. If you read the Chinese account of the Persian War, you will see that the Chinese military was astonished at the rapidity with which the U.S. and Coalition forces defeated one of the largest and best equipped armies in the world. This was an army that had years of experience fighting against Iran so they were experienced. Still, the Chinese saw that the Iraqi army was no match for what they were up against. The U.S. and coalition success in the Persian Gulf War pretty much woke up the Chinese People''s Liberation Army (PLA) that they had better modernize if they were ever have to go up against the U.S. on the battlefield. I am pretty sure that the lessons of the Persian Gulf War were not lost on other foreign military around the world. The Persian Gulf War was really only the tip of the iceberg when we talk about 21st Century Warfare. It showed that war in the future would be complex and asymmetrical. If you did not fight in Desert Storm, this makes interesting reading. The performance of the weaponry and the professionalism displayed by the coalition forces working together was not accidental. It took hard work and careful planning. This is not a lesson we should forget. This should be mandatory reading in all the U.S. service academies. It is most probably mandatory in foreign military academies. This is Volume 2 of 3 (Total book was over 1,300 pages) and contains: Appendix T - Performance of Selected Weapon Systems Appendix A - U.S. Fatalities and Prisoners of War Attributed Directly to Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm From 3 Aug 1990 to 15 December 1991 Appendix B - United Nations Resolutions on Iraq Appendix C - Intelligence Appendix D - Preparedness of United States Forces Appendix E - Deployment Appendix F - Logistics Buildup and Sustainment Appendix G - Medical Support Appendix H - Reserve Component Forces Appendix I - Coalition Development, Coordination, and Welfare Appendix J - Special Operations Forces Why buy a book you can download for free? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many individuals, groups, and federal agencies have a strong interest in finding answers to the numerous and complex questions regarding the health of Gulf War veterans. Various types of research and health measurement are needed to address these diverse issues. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was asked by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) to undertake a study to identify important questions concerning the health of Gulf War veterans and then to design a study to answer those questions. The committee determined that it is of fundamental importance to ask how healthy are Gulf War veterans? Are they as healthy as others? What characteristics are associated with differences between the health of Gulf War veterans and the health of others? To address these questions, it will be necessary to measure not only the health status of those who served in the Gulf War, but also to compare Gulf War veterans with other groups. Further, one must continue to follow these groups through time to determine whether the groups differ in the way their health status is changing. As the committee began to develop a design that would address the fundamental questions identified, it realized that such a study could have important implications for understanding not only the health of Gulf War veterans, but also the health of veterans of other conflicts.
