This book was released on 2022-05-08 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much research focuses on investigating the responses of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under sole impact or blast loads, the responses of RC structures under a combination of impact and blast loads currently represent a gap in our knowledge. The combined actions of impact and blast loadings may be applied to RC structures during accidental or intentional collision of vessels, vehicles, etc., carrying explosive materials. A comprehensive study on the vulnerability of various structural members is carried out using finite element (FE) simulations under combination of impact and blast loads with the variations of various loading- and structural-related parameters and key parameters. This book introduces various structural analysis approaches for concrete structures when subjected to extreme loads such as impact and blast loadings. The theory of the combinations of impact and blast loads is proposed that can provide primary insights to the specific readers to develop new ideas in impact and blast engineering, including combined actions of extreme loads arising from real-world intentional or accidental events. This book will be of value to students (undergraduate or postgraduate), engineers, and researchers in structural and civil engineering, and specifically, those who are studying and investigating the performances of concrete structures under extreme loads.

Book excerpt: Terrorist attacks and other destructive incidents caused by explosives have, in recent years, prompted considerable research and development into the protection of structures against blast loads. For this objective to be achieved, experiments have been performed and theoretical studies carried out to improve our assessments of the intensity as well as the space-time distribution of the resulting blast pressure on the one hand and the consequences of an explosion to the exposed environment on the other. This book aims to enhance awareness on and understanding of these topical issues through a collection of relevant, Transactions of the Wessex Institute of Technology articles written by experts in the field. The book starts with an overview of key physics-based algorithms for blast and fragment environment characterisation, structural response analyses and structural assessments with reference to a terrorist attack in an urban environment and the management of its inherent uncertainties.A subsequent group of articles is concerned with the accurate definition of blast pressure, which is an essential prerequisite to the reliable assessment of the consequences of an explosion. Other papers are concerned with alternative methods for the determination of blast pressure, based on experimental measurements or neural networks. A final group of articles reports investigations on predicting the response of specific structural entities and their contents. The book concludes with studies on the effectiveness of steel-reinforced polymer in improving the performance of reinforced concrete columns and the failure mechanisms of seamless steel pipes used in nuclear industry.

Book excerpt: Prepared by the Task Committee on Structural Design for Physical Security of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This report provides guidance to structural engineers in the design of civil structures to resist the effects of terrorist bombings. As dramatized by the bombings of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, civil engineers today need guidance on designing structures to resist hostile acts. The U.S. military services and foreign embassy facilities developed requirements for their unique needs, but these the documents are restricted. Thus, no widely available document exists to provide engineers with the technical data necessary to design civil structures for enhanced physical security. The unrestricted government information included in this report is assembled collectively for the first time and rephrased for application to civilian facilities. Topics include: determination of the threat, methods by which structural loadings are derived for the determined threat, the behavior and selection of structural systems, the design of structural components, the design of security doors, the design of utility openings, and the retrofitting of existing structures. This report transfers this technology to the civil sector and provides complete methods, guidance, and references for structural engineers challenged with a physical security problem.

Due to intricate behaviour and response of structures reduces life drastically. The study of responses to various loading conditions gives us a better understanding of loading. A better understanding of loading conditions can improve the life of the structure. Unconventional loadings have always been difficult to study and predict their influence on a structure. Blast loading has always been difficult to understand as there is a bridge between theories and computing software to replicate the blast effect on the structure. A simple and effective approach has been studied so as to reduce the complexity and increase the efficiency of blast load analysis. Implicit nature of blast load has been considered in the study for simplicity of calculation and economical application of blast resistance to structures. ABAQUS software has been used to replicate the blast effect on structural members and parameters have been suggested by Indian Standards for blast loading. The study aims to provide a better and easy understanding of blast load analysis. It also compares the efficiency of members designed to withstand conventional loads and design suggestions which would improve the efficiency of members subjected to blast loading. Mass as a measure of inertial force has been considered as a parameter for design suggestion. Design suggestions are based on trial and error method.

Book excerpt: The reliable rating of protective structures in a blast environment depends to a large extent on the ability to predict the magnitude and duration of the blast load required to produce incipient collapse. Such ability is best developed on the basis of experimental data on the failure of structures. At the present time experimental data on this subject is very limited. Also, the field of predicting incipient collapse of structures is mostly in its infancy. This paper briefly reviews the state-of-the-art of predicting the incipient collapse of structures subjected to blast loads and presents a suggested experimental and analytic, probability based program capable of producing the required data and criteria by the use of full-scale tests and model studies. The emphasis of this review is on reinforced concrete structures.
