Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Stone Manufacture Failures are a necessary part of success. The failures in the field of concrete products manufacture have at least justified the assertion, that, simple as the industry's pro cesses have seemed, they are of a nature demanding skill, judgment and tho/roughgoing workmanship. To have discovered even so little as this is to have made a begin ning in 'the way of success. Many have gone forward much further; some have turned failure into success and there are very few who have not learned through bitter experience. Those who have paid the most dearly for their knowledge are the most generous in giving it away. They have appreciated that ultimate success is built upon public confidence and that public confidence is won for a product when its per centage of failure is low. They have seen that they can not, in a broad sense, succeed in any way more surely than through the success of others. They are themselves but units in the structure of an industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete-Block Manufacture: Processes and Machines The object of this book is to present in a simple manner those well-established principles of concreting which practice has shown applicable to the manufacture of concrete blocks for building hollow walls. The theoretical and technical questions which arise in connec tion with the industry are only considered in so far as benefit may result to the operator in the actual manufacture of blocks and their use in construction. The conclusions which have been reached are the result not only of the author's experience in actual work, but of a careful consideration of the successes and failures of a large number of operators throughout a series of years, supplemented by a careful weighing of the many articles bearing on particular phases of the subject which have been published in cement, engineering, and building magazines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Portland Cement Industry in the United States: With Appendices Covering Progress of the Industry by Years and an Outline of the Organization and Activities of the Portland Cement Association What you are, speaks so loudly that people oftentimes do not hear what you say. The Cement Industry of the United States has established for itself a position of such permanence and importance in America's indus trial life, that neither arguments nor eulogies are needed to gain public recognition and appreciation for this great business. We may search the whole field of material virtues and yet find nothing that so commands our respect as does permanence. It is not the beauty of the Pyramids that holds the traveler in Egypt charmed, but it is the appeal their rugged endurance makes to his imagination. They appear to be something that connects today with yesterday - the present with the past - and while they may represent no more than a foolish waste of human effort, they have the power to go on and on, unyielding even to the ceaseless attacks of the wearing elements and the sands of the desert. Cement means concrete; concrete means stone; and stone spells eternity, so far as our finite minds can comprehend. The development of methods to manufacture great quantities of synthetic stone has given our present civilization the durability it so much needed. The creation of a great Cement Industry has removed, in large degree, the serious menace to life of a coming timber famine. The rapid progress of science and engineer ing in our country has been made possible by our cement mills, which have given us the essential material on which to found our prosperity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ransome Book: How to Make and How to Use Concrete IN issuing this booklet the Ransome Concrete Machinery Company is making a departure from usual practice that it is hoped will be popular. The Ransome line of machinery and concreting equip ment has been subordinated to those fundamental practices which govern success in the use of concrete. The thought is this: However good the machine may be, the concrete cannot be all that it should be unless the human element can be controlled. The machine cannot do that. This is up to the man on the job. Success in the use of concrete, as in the use of any other building material, lies in following well established rules that have proved themselves the proper guide. Concrete is too big a subject to be covered within the limited space of this booklet; but there have been gathered here useful data that are applicable to almost any and every kind of concrete work. Every page, it is believed, contains more than one reminder of the things that should be done but which are frequently overlooked or neglected. Among many sources of information on the uses of concrete are the numerous booklets and pamphlets issued by the Portland Cement Association. All of these publications can be obtained for the asking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cement and Concrete That the use of cement has outstripped the literature on the subject is evidenced by the number and character of the inquiries addressed to technical journals concerning it. This volume is not designed to fill the proverbial long felt want, for until within a few' years the number of engineers using cement in large quantities was quite limited. These American pioneers in cement engineering, under one of whom the author received his first practical training in this line, needed no formal introduction to the use and properties of cement; their knowl edge was born and nurtured through intimate association and careful observation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete: Its Use in Building and the Construction of Concrete Walls, Floors, Etc But if a house has a showy portico, with a flight of stone steps leading thereto, or some other form of attraction, it will - with by far the greater number atone for a multitude of shortcomings in other respects; and if moreover the walls are brick-built, the bricks coloured. To make them look uniform and hide their defects, and the joints tuck pointed, scarcely one person in a thousand would consider for one moment, whether or not they would absorb an indefinite amount of rain, and what must become of all the moisture they imbibe. If the walls will just, and but just, keep the wet from penetrating as far as the paper-hangings, the house is declared to be per fectly dry, and no thought is given as to the mass of damp material encompassing the inmates on all sides. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Rudimentary Treatise on Foundations Concrete Works Art of Building; Principles of Brick-making and the Manufacture of Bricks and Tiles; On Masonry and Stone-cutting, and on Foundations and Concrete Works, is the best test of their practical utility. There are few manuals, designed specially for the use of work men, that have achieved greater success. In the preface to the former edition Mr. Dobson called the attention of those readers Who may not have purchased the Art of Building to the fact of the present volume being written in continuation of the chapter in that Work devoted to the subject of and intended to give further information on those parts of the subject Which could then only be touched upon very briefly. He added, I may also observe, that many subjects Which are treated of very fully in other volumes of the Rudimentary Treatises are here for that reason left unnoticed, or are merely glanced at in a cursory manner; as, for example, the blasting of rocks, the nature and properties of limes and cements, the construction of travelling and other cranes, and of hoisting machinery in general. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Concrete and Works in Concrete Especially Written to Assist Those Engaged Upon Public Works In the following notes no particular reference is made to the manufacture, composition, or scientific testing of Portland cement, its use on the work being principally considered. Briefly, the valuableness of Portland cement is its power of firmly uniting other substances, its cohesive ness, durability, and adaptability to be moulded into any form with a rapidity of execution unattainable with brickwork or masonry.
