Book excerpt: Transport Properties of Concrete: Modelling the Durability of Structures, Second Edition, covers how to measure transport properties and use the results to model performance. The transport properties of concrete and measurements of the ability of ions and fluids to move through the material. These properties largely determine the durability of concrete and of steel embedded within it, as well as the effectiveness of structures such as waste containment barriers. The book provides a comprehensive examination of the subject and will be of use to all concerned with the durability and effectiveness of concrete structures. Includes a new chapter on modelling the durability of concrete structures showing how both diffusion and pressure driven flow should be included Covers the problems that occur when carrying out transport tests on concrete incorporating both traditional and newer cement replacements Shows how properties such as permeabilty which are needed for modelling may be derived from in situ tests on structures

Book excerpt: Transport Processes in Concrete presents a comprehensive survey of the physical and chemical processes and transport mechanisms in concrete, and analyses their significance for the movement of heat, moisture and chemical compounds. A critical analysis of the available mathematical models is given, and from this analysis the most suitable models to describe transport processes in concrete are selected. The authors provide an overview of methods for determining field variables and transport and storage parameters, and demonstrate the practical application of computational modelling of transport processes in the design of concrete structures. This book presents a practical methodology for researchers and practitioners in the field of concrete technology and durability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel-reinforced concrete is used ubiquitously as a building material due to its unique combination of the high compressive strength of concrete and the high tensile strength of steel. Therefore, reinforced concrete is an ideal composite material that is used for a wide range of applications in structural engineering such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, harbor quays, foundations, tanks and pipes. To ensure durability of these structures, however, measures must be taken to prevent, diagnose and, if necessary, repair damage to the material especially due to corrosion of the steel reinforcement. The book examines the different aspects of corrosion of steel in concrete, starting from basic and essential mechanisms of the phenomenon, moving up to practical consequences for designers, contractors and owners both for new and existing reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. It covers general aspects of corrosion and protection of reinforcement, forms of attack in the presence of carbonation and chlorides, problems of hydrogen embrittlement as well as techniques of diagnosis, monitoring and repair. This second edition updates the contents with recent findings on the different topics considered and bibliographic references, with particular attention to recent European standards. This book is a self-contained treatment for civil and construction engineers, material scientists, advanced students and architects concerned with the design and maintenance of reinforced concrete structures. Readers will benefit from the knowledge, tools, and methods needed to understand corrosion in reinforced concrete and how to prevent it or keep it within acceptable limits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With advancements in materials, equipment, placement procedures, and project management techniques, the construction and rehabilitation of concrete pavements can be effectively accomplished under traffic. Many projects have been constructed under varying levels of traffic, ranging from temporary closures to the maintenance of high traffic volumes adjacent to or through the projects. However, the current state of the practice in constructing or rehabilitating concrete pavements under traffic relies primarily on a few high-profile and well-documented projects. This study identified practices from projects representing a wider range of conditions and techniques. Information on existing practices and advancements in concrete pavement construction and rehabilitation was gathered through literature reviews and a survey of state transportation agencies, including that of the District of Columbia and the Illinois Tollway. Furthermore, sixteen case examples were reported to illustrate successful projects conducted under a variety of scenarios.

Book excerpt: Transport Properties of Concrete covers how to measure the ability of ions and fluids to move through concrete material, and how to use the results to model performance. These transport properties largely determine the durability of concrete and of steel embedded within it, as well as the effectiveness of structures such as landfill containment barriers. The book begins by explaining in detail what transport properties are and how to write computer models for transport processes. Early chapters present and explain computer models written in basic code. Coverage then proceeds to a wide range of tests for the transport properties of concrete, and methods for calculating the values for these properties from the test results using analytical and numerical models. The final chapters then show how the values obtained can be used to predict the durability of reinforced concrete, to model the effect of gas pressure, and to model waste containment structures. A number of practical examples are given, in which the calculations and computer models have been applied to real experimental data. Transport Properties of Concrete provides a comprehensive examination of the subject, and will be of use to all concerned with the durability and effectiveness of concrete structures. Provides a detailed understanding of the various transport mechanisms that take place during testing in concrete Shows how to obtain fundamental transport properties

Book excerpt: This book provides a unified description of transport processes involving saturated and unsaturated flow in inorganic building materials and structures. It emphasizes fundamental physics and materials science, mathematical description, and experimental measurement as a basis for engineering design and construction practice. Water Transport in Brick, Stone and Concrete brings together in a unified manner current information and guidance on a complex subject. Durability of much of the built infrastructure depends on how water reacts with the construction material concerned, yet the underlying science of deterioration processes is not yet well understood. This book, by the two leading researchers in the field, will provide a central point of reference for the future. The second edition includes many references to new publications and gives new analyses of important topics in water transport, notably on the evaporation-driven moisture dynamics of built structures.

Book excerpt: Until the early 1990s, curling and warping of Portland cement concrete pavement did not concern pavement engineers in many transportation agencies. Since beginning construction of the interstate system in the United States in the late 1950s through the late 1980s, the performance of Portland cement concrete pavement has been associated with properties of concrete as a pavement material. In those years developed standards and design guidelines emphasized better concrete materials and construction control. At the time, combining curling and loading stresses was quite controversial due to the nature of the load-carrying capacity of concrete pavement and the occurrence of types of loads. Arguments developed that the types of loads (traffic and curling) rarely occurred at the same time of day. The concrete pavement design principle did not include the effects of curling and warping of concrete pavement as determining design factors in pavement performance. This research project was initiated as a response from the INDOT Pavement Steering Committee related to the joint spacing of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement in Indiana. There was an initiative in the Committee to reduce the joint spacing from 18 feet to 15 feet as a way to reduce premature concrete pavement deterioration. There was an indication that some newly paved JPCP had transverse cracks even before the pavement section was opened to traffic. In this experimental study, several important conclusions were drawn from temperature analysis, stress-strain analysis, and other data analysis. The analysis from this experimental study supports the decision by INDOT to shorten the concrete pavement joint spacing to increase the performance of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement in Indiana.
