Book excerpt: This present book mainly introduces the latest advancements in design and construction technologies of large-span concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) arch bridges and steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) arch bridges with a CFST rigid skeleton. The main contents include overall introduction, structural design of the 500-meter scale CFST arch bridges, manufacture and transportation of the steel arch truss segments, design and construction of the buckling system of stayed cables, calculation method and its practice for one-time tensioning of buckle cables, preparation and pouring of the in-tube concrete, design, construction and application of the hoisting system of suspension cables, active force method for displacement control of the hoisting and buckling tower, and the state of the art of the SRC arch bridges. The major innovations of the book are generally summarized from the engineering practices of three recently built super-large-span CFST arch bridges in China, which were guided by the author and his team. Therefore, the well-organized book is of both high practical and theoretical value. This book is a good reference for bridge design and construction professionals. Also, it serves as a textbook for undergraduate students majoring in civil engineering and graduate students majoring in structural engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering in universities.

Book excerpt: Modern structural engineering surprises us with the mastery and certainty with which it plans and carries out daring projects, such as the most recent metal or concrete bridges, whether they be suspension or arch bridges. On the other hand, little is yet known about the state of knowledge of construction science and techniques which, well before the arrival of modern methods based on the mechanics of deformable continua, made it possible in the past to erect the vaulted masonry structures rthat we have inherited. The fact that these have lasted through many centuries to our time, and are still in a fairly good state of conservation, makes them competitive, as far as stability and durability are concerned, with those constructed in other materials. Although it is known that the equilibrium of the arch is guaranteed by any funicular whatsoever of the loads, contained inside the profile of an arch, finding the unique solution is not such a certainty. In other words, the problem of the equilibrium of vaulted structures is 'Poleni's problem', the one for which the Venetian scientist was able to give an exemplary solution on the occasion of the assessment of the dome of St. Peter's. Arch Bridges focuses on the main aspects of the debate about the masonry arch bridge: History of structural mechanics and construction, theoretical models, analysis for assessment, numerical methods, experimental and non-destructive testing, maintenance and repair are the topics of the Conference. The breadth and variety of the contributions presented and discussed by leading experts from many countries make this volume an authoritative source of up-to-date information.

Book Synopsis Theory of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Structures by : Lin-Hai Han
Download or read book Theory of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Structures written by Lin-Hai Han and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook focuses on concrete-filled steel tubular structures formed by placing concrete inside the steel tube. It deals with the mechanical essence of concrete-filled steel tubular members in compression/tension, bending, torsion, shear and the combined effects, the working mechanism of concrete-filled steel tubular members under long-term load, cyclic load, fire exposure and post-fire exposure, and proposes practical design methods based on experimental and theoretical studies and parametric analysis. The content addresses some key technical issues of concrete-filled steel tubular members, such as the mechanical properties of steel and core concrete, the shrinkage and creep of core concrete, the bonding behavior between steel tube and core concrete, the limiting values for the initial stress of steel tube caused by construction load and the void of core concrete, the protective design of concrete-filled steel tubular members under chloride corrosive environment and impact loading, etc. This textbook also discusses the technology and design principles of concrete-filled steel tubular hybrid structures.

Excerpt: ... no danger of crushing from the horizontal thrust around "the second crown from the top, as stone will bear on a square unit a pillar of a square unit section and several thousand units high. Similarly for resultants on all the joints. We conclude that with the backing used and by increasing the depth of arch ring at the springing about onethird, the arch will be stable. FORMULAS FOB VOLUME. 75. When the soffit and exterior surface of the dome are both surfaces of spheres having the same centre, the volumes of the voussoirs are easily obtained. Thus, by geometry, the area of the zone formed by revolving an arc as rs (Fig. 22) about the axis ac is equal to the altitude h of rs multiplied by 2w, r being the radius as of the sphere. Pass now two meridian planes through ac, whose included angle is--of a circumference. The part of the zone included between them has an area so that the pyra n mid formed on this base with a vertex at a, 27tr'h na$ a volume----. 3n Similarly the pyramid having the part and h' = altitude of arc tv. Therefore the volume of the voussoir rstv included between the meridian planes and the conical joints rv and st is, where r and h are the radius and altitude of the exterior arc, r' and h' of the interior. If the altitudes of the type h are made equal in successive arcs, the values h' will all be equal. This can be shown as follows: Draw horizontal lines through r and v, Fig. 22, and drop verticals h and h' from s and t to them, and call the chords rs and vt, c and c', . from similar triangles, .-. When h is constant for successive arcs of the extrados, h' is similarly constant for the corresponding arcs of the intrados. Similarly the centre line of the arch ring will be divided into arcs of the same altitude when...
