Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notes for Clarinetists: A Guide to the Repertoire offers important historical and analytical information about thirty-five of the best-known pieces written for the instrument. Numerous contextual and theoretical insights make it an essential resource for professional, amateur, and student clarinetists. With engaging prose supported by fact-filled analytical charts, the book offers rich biographical information and informative analyses to help clarinetists gain a more complete understanding of Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo by Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland's Concerto for Clarinet, String Orchestra, Harp, and Piano, Robert Schumann's Fantasy Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 73. and Time Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 43. by Robert Muczynski, among many others. With close attention to matters of context, style, and harmonic and formal analysis, Albert Rice explores a significant portion of the repertoire, and offers a faithful and comprehensive guide that includes works by Boulez, Brahms, and Mozart to Hindemith, Poulenc, and Stamitz. Rice includes biographical information on each composer and highlights history's impact on the creation and performance of important works for clarinet. Intended as a starting point for connecting performance studies with scholarship, Rice's analysis will help clarinetists gain a more complete picture of a given work. Its valuable insights make it essential to musicians preparing and presenting programs, and its detailed historical information about the work and composer will encourage readers to explore other works in a similarly analytical way. Covering concertos, chamber pieces, and works for solo clarinet, Rice presents Notes for Clarinetists as an indispensable handbook for students and professionals alike.

Book Synopsis The Concerto by : Michael Steinberg

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Steinberg's 1996 volume The Symphony: A Reader's Guide received glowing reviews across America. It was hailed as "wonderfully clear...recommended warmly to music lovers on all levels" (Washington Post), "informed and thoughtful" (Chicago Tribune), and "composed by a master stylist" (San Francisco Chronicle). Seiji Ozawa wrote that "his beautiful and effortless prose speaks from the heart." Michael Tilson Thomas called The Symphony "an essential book for any concertgoer." Now comes the companion volume--The Concerto: A Listener's Guide. In this marvelous book, Steinberg discusses over 120 works, ranging from Johann Sebastian Bach in the 1720s to John Adams in 1994. Readers will find here the heart of the standard repertory, among them Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, eighteen of Mozart's piano concertos, all the concertos of Beethoven and Brahms, and major works by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, Bruch, Dvora'k, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Elgar, Sibelius, Strauss, and Rachmaninoff. The book also provides luminous introductions to the achievement of twentieth-century masters such as Arnold Schoenberg, Be'la Barto'k, Igor Stravinsky, Alban Berg, Paul Hindemith, Sergei Prokofiev, Aaron Copland, and Elliott Carter. Steinberg examines the work of these musical giants with unflagging enthusiasm and bright style. He is a master of capturing the expressive, dramatic, and emotional values of the music and of conveying the historical and personal context in which these wondrous works were composed. His writing blends impeccable scholarship, deeply felt love of music, and entertaining whimsy. Here then is a superb journey through one of music's richest and most diverse forms, with Michael Steinberg along as host, guide, and the best of companions.

Book excerpt: Max Pegues presented a graduate clarinet recital on March 28th, 2015 at 3:00 pm in Room 101 of the Music Building. The works presented reflect the various compositional styles of the 20th-century. Solo and collaborative works displayed the varied roles of the clarinet within the literature. The recital began with Musikalisches Blumengärtlein un Leyptziger Allerley (Little Musical Flower Garden) by Paul Hindemith. A duet for clarinet and cello, this intimate set of nine short pieces is a rarely performed work from the clarinet repertoire. Following this more obscure piece was Flammes, 5 études pour clarinette seule by Janos Komives. An unaccompanied work, these etudes showcase the performer's technique and virtuosity. The Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Arnold Bax is a late-Romantic, standard work for clarinet. Composed in 1934, the clarinet and piano share equal roles, often trading the melodic and accompanying lines. The program concluded with Aaron Copland's Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra (with Harp and Piano.) Written for famed clarinetist Benny Goodman, this piece was combines classical styles and the jazz idiom. Completed in 1948, this piece has become a modern standard in the clarinet repertoire. Together, these works resulted in a program of the various compositional styles of the 20th-century. The various genres represented provided variety, and showcased the clarinet's ability to convey a wide range of expression.
