The study addressed itself to three closely related tasks. (1) A review of the current understanding of fast reactor safety with the aim of identifying important areas of uncertainty which cannot be adequately resolved using analysis, out of pile and/or existing in-pile facilities. (2) Conceptual design studies of one or more new in-pile facilities having characteristics identified in (1) above. (3) An examination of advanced data acquisition techniques for possible incorporation in the new facilities. The work reported is an extension of the earlier work in task area (2) above. Based largely on conclusions drawn from the earlier work the scope of the current effort has been narrowed to the design study of a Type A facility operating in the Class III mode, i.e., a facility capable of accommodating up to 37 test pins and capable of imposing a burst on top of a high steady state power level. The core consists of a plate type element in a square configuration. Beryllium metal between the fuel elements is used to obtain a neutron energy spectrum in the hard intermediate region. Cooling of the core and test specimens is accomplished by means of liquid sodium. Book excerpt: The TREAT Upgrade Project is one of the Safety Research Experiment Facilities (SAREF) projects which were identified in 1976 as test facilities necessary to the resolution of key safety issues in the Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) program. These proposed facilities were recommended as a result of the Experiment Needs and Facilities Study conducted by Argonne National Laboratory for ERDA in early 1976. Volume II of that study presented the initial conceptual design of the TREAT Upgrade, and it specifically described the significant increases in safety experiment capability that this project would provide early in the SAREF program at modest cost. This refined conceptual design report is intended to serve as a current status report emphasizing major changes in scope of the TREAT Upgrade Project. The overall objectives of improved test capability are substantially unchanged, and several sections of the Volume II material which discussed these overall objectives of improved capability for energy deposition and flatness of radial power distribution in larger test fuel bundles are accordingly reiterated or referenced in their entirety. The major changes in scope relate to the more extensive revisions than were envisioned in the earlier study with regard to building and site modifications and other provisions for handling and utilizing the larger test loops. The present status of these design modifications, the reactor modifications, the modified TREAT fuel assemblies, and the Advanced TREAT Loop and other experimental equipment and systems are described in this report. Also presented or discussed are required development activities, the management plan to carry out the project schedule, and a current summary estimate of total project cost and yearly project expenditures.
